Quenched molecular dynamics studies on the extraction energy of aluminum atoms

2007

The extraction energy of an aluminum atom is calculated at 0 K as a function of coordination number and defect depth for three surface orientations [(100), (110) and (111)]. For each orientation, atoms are selected and extracted one by one. A linear relationship is obtained between the extraction energy of surface atoms and their coordination numbers (with slight variations due to the geometrical configuration of the atoms). However, the study of the influence of the defect depth on the extraction energy highlights the role played by intrinsic stress on the extraction energy. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Roughening of the Cu(110) surface

1993

The structure of the Cu(110) surface is studied at high temperatures using a combination of lattice-gas Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods with identical many-atom interactions derived from the effective medium theory. The anisotropic six-vertex model is used in the interpretation of the lattice-gas results. We find a clear roughening transition around T_R=1000K and T_R/T_M=0.81. Molecular dynamics reveals the clustering of surface defects as the atomistic mechanism of the transition and allows us to estimate characteristic time scales. For the system of size 50x50, the time scale of the local roughening at 1150 K of an initially smooth surface is of the order of 100 ps.

Longitudinal spin-relaxation in nitrogen-vacancy centers in electron irradiated diamond

2015

We present systematic measurements of longitudinal relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) of spin polarization in the ground state of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^-$) color center in synthetic diamond as a function of NV$^-$ concentration and magnetic field $B$. NV$^-$ centers were created by irradiating a Type 1b single-crystal diamond along the [100] axis with 200 keV electrons from a transmission electron microscope with varying doses to achieve spots of different NV$^-$ center concentrations. Values of ($1/T_1$) were measured for each spot as a function of $B$.

Phase separation of symmetric polymer mixtures in a common good solvent in the semidilute concentration regime

1994

Monte Carlo simulations of lattice models of binary (AB) symmetric polymer mixtures (chain lengthsN A=N B=N) in a common good solvent are carried out and the phase diagrams and critical properties of the unmixing transitions are estimated and interpreted in terms of recent theories. Polymers are modeled by self-avoiding walks of lengthN=16, 32 and 64 on the simple cubic lattice. Data for vacancy concentrations of φV=0.6, 0.8 and 0.85 are analyzed. It is shown that forN=16, φV=0.85 no phase separation occurs, down to the lowest temperature, while forN=32, φV=0.85 still phase separation occurs but no longer is complete. Our results are compatible with a scaling theory based on a “renormalizat…

Positron detrapping from defects: A thermodynamic approach

1981

The rate of positron detrapping in thermal equilibrium from lattice defects has been calculated by relating it to the specific trapping rate. The results for vacancies, dislocations and surfaces each show a different temperature dependence for the escape rate. For vacancies a measure of the importance of the detrapping can be obtained from the ratio of the vacancy formation energy to the positron binding energy in the defect. The positronium desorption rate from a surface is also calculated and agreement with experimental results is found.

Low-Frequency Relaxation Phenomena in α-LiIO3: The Nature and Role of Defects

2002

The lithium iodate ionic conduction in the polar c-axis direction is studied between 35 and 470 K for crystals grown in various conditions. So far, to separate processes induced by the nature of electrodes, the impedance spectroscopy technique had been used at room temperature with both metallic and ideally polarizable insulating electrodes, so that a relaxation of space charges was clearly identified. Here, the temperature dependence of the hopping ionic conductivity exhibits quite different activation energies well related to the growth conditions. Following low-temperature Raman and thermodynamic experiments, a new approach based on a vacancy diffusion mechanism is proposed. Experimental…

Beyond ideal two-dimensional metals: Edges, vacancies, and polarizabilities

2018

Recent experimental discoveries of graphene-stabilized patches of two-dimensional (2D) metals have motivated also their computational studies. However, so far the studies have been restricted to ideal and infinite 2D metallic monolayers, which is insufficient because in reality the properties of such metallic patches are governed by microstructures pervaded by edges, defects, and several types of perturbations. Here we use density-functional theory to calculate edge and vacancy formation energies of hexagonal and square lattices of 45 elemental 2D metals. We find that the edge and vacancy formation energies are strongly correlated and decrease with increasing Wigner-Seitz radii, analogously…

Spinodal decomposition of a two-dimensional model alloy with mobile vacancies

1991

Abstract Monte Carlo simulations are performed for the initial stages of phase separation in a model binary alloy (AB), where unmixing is caused by a repulsive energy between atoms of different kind ( e AA = e BB = e ), and a small fraction c v of mobile vacancies is present (typically c v = 0.04.) Unlike previous work, where interdiffusion was modelled in an unrealistic way by direct interchange of A and B atoms for c v = 0, were use the vacancy mechanism of diffusion: A-atoms may jump to vacant sites with a rate Γ A and B-atoms may jump to vacant sites with a rate Γ B , no direct A–B interchange being permitted. It is shown that the overall time-scale on which phase separation proceeds ty…

Electrochemically triggered iodide-vacancy BiOI film for selective extraction of iodide ion from aqueous solutions

2021

Abstract The effective extraction and regeneration of radioactive iodide remains an urgent concern for safe nuclear energy utilization. Herein, we developed a novel electrochemically triggered iodide-vacancy BiOI film, which exhibited excellent I− ion extraction capacity of 328.3 mg·g−1. Especially, due to the ion vacancy trap effect, the film showed high selectivity towards I− ions in the existence of a large number of competitive anions. Additionally, the electrochemically switched ion extraction (ESIE) process with this iodide-vacancy BiOI film possessed fast extraction kinetics and high stability. More importantly, the trapped I− ions were easily desorbed from the film without the secon…
