Coarse-Grained Barrier Trees of Fitness Landscapes
2016
Recent literature suggests that local optima in fitness landscapes are clustered, which offers an explanation of why perturbation-based metaheuristics often fail to find the global optimum: they become trapped in a sub-optimal cluster. We introduce a method to extract and visualize the global organization of these clusters in form of a barrier tree. Barrier trees have been used to visualize the barriers between local optima basins in fitness landscapes. Our method computes a more coarsely grained tree to reveal the barriers between clusters of local optima. The core element is a new variant of the flooding algorithm, applicable to local optima networks, a compressed representation of fitnes…
Current status of Schistosoma mansoni infection among previously treated rural communities in the Abbey and Didessa Valleys, Western Ethiopia: Implic…
2021
Background Schistosoma constitutes a major public health problem and developmental challenges in the majority of developing and subtropical regions. The World Health Organization has set guidelines for the control and elimination of schistosomiasis. Ethiopia is providing school-based Mass Drug Administration (MDA) at the study areas of the Abbey and Didessa Valleys of western Ethiopian since 2015. Moreover, mass treatment was already done in the same villages 30 years ago. However, the current Schistosoma mansoni infection status among humans and snails in the study areas is not known. Hence, the present study aims to determine the current status. Methods A community-based cross-sectional …
Density-Functional Tight-Binding Simulations of Curvature-Controlled Layer Decoupling and Band-Gap Tuning in BilayerMoS2
2014
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) display valley-selective circular dichroism due to the presence of time-reversal symmetry and the absence of inversion symmetry, making them promising candidates for valleytronics. In contrast, in bilayer TMDCs both symmetries are present and these desirable valley-selective properties are lost. Here, by using density-functional tight-binding electronic structure simulations and revised periodic boundary conditions, we show that bending of bilayer MoS2 sheets breaks band degeneracies and localizes states on separate layers due to bending-induced strain gradients across the sheets. We propose a strategy for employing bending deformations in …
Optical and electronic properties of 2H−MoS2 under pressure: Revealing the spin-polarized nature of bulk electronic bands
2018
Monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors present spin-valley locked electronic bands, a property with applications in valleytronics and spintronics that is usually believed to be absent in their centrosymmetric (as the bilayer or bulk) counterparts. Here we show that bulk $2\mathrm{H}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Mo}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ hides a spin-polarized nature of states determining its direct band gap, with the spin sequence of valence and conduction bands expected for its single layer. This relevant finding is attained by investigating the behavior of the binding energy of $A$ and $B$ excitons under high pressure, by means of absorption measurements and density-functi…
Human responses to Younger Dryas in the Ebro valley and Mediterranean watershed (Eastern Spain)
2011
The archaeological and chronological records of the Ebro River valley and the Mediterranean watershed (Eastern Spain) are examined to evaluate the effects of the Younger Dryas (Greenland Stadial 1) on the foragers of an area between 36
Intraseasonal variations of June?September rainfall and upper-air circulation over Kenya
1996
In the Northern Summer, Kenya is located under the influence of the divergent Indian monsoon flow, and therefore is dry except for two separate areas: the coastal strip and the western regions. Analysis of daily rainfall data for June–September 1982 to 1988 has revealed that, although there are many distinct rainfall events between the two regions, an out-of-phase relationship is also evident, rain on the Coast being frequently accompanied by a drop in the precipitation over the Rift Valley area. It is shown that two types of wind forcing accompany these patterns. Alternating westerly and easterly anomalies at the 700 hPa level are associated with persistent wet and dry conditions (respecti…
Uzņēmuma Greenvalley mārketinga aktivitātes no 2016. līdz 2019. gadam
2020
Searching for hidden sectors in multiparticle production at the LHC
2016
Most signatures of new physics in colliders have been studied so far on the transverse plane with respect to the beam direction. In this work however we study the impact of a hidden sector beyond the Standard Model (SM) on inclusive (pseudo)rapidity correlations and moments of the multiplicity distributions, with special emphasis in the LHC results.
Conversion electron spectroscopy at IGISOL
2012
Conversion elecron spectroscopy has been an important part of the nuclear spectrocopy research at the Department of Physics of the University of Jyv¨askyl¨a since the commissioning of the first cyclotron in the mid 1970s. At the IGISOL facility a specialiced conversion electron spectrometer ELLI was developed in the late 1980s. The first results with ELLI were obtained using the beams from the old MC-20 cyclotron to study newly discovered isotopes of refractory fission products. In the present K130 cyclotron laboratory ELLI has been utilized in many decay-spectroscopy experiments both neutron-deficient and neutron-rich side of the valley of stability. In the early 2000s the new JYFLTRAP ion…
