ESWL Prediction of outcome and failure Prevention
2007
Based on our own experiences and a review of the recent literature, this article evaluates recent developments in predicting outcomes and failures of shockwave lithotripsy when treating patients with urinary tract stones. After a detailed MEDLINE research, the authors identified several variables that influence and predict extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) success. These variables may be categorized as stone variables, patient variables and operator variables. Only multivariate analysis on a large number of homogenous patients may offer an objective evaluation of the factors conditioning ESWL outcome.
Efficacy and Safety of Multiple Doses of Imab362 in Patients with Advanced Gastro-Esophageal Cancer: Results of a Phase Ii Study
2014
ABSTRACT Aim: IMAB362 is a monoclonal antibody specifically targeting claudin 18 isoform 2 (CLDN18.2), which is expressed on gastric cancer cells, whereas it is only present on a fraction of healthy stomach cells. This may reduce the risk of target-related side effects. Single-agent IMAB362 appears safe in patients with advanced gastro-esophageal cancer (GEC) based on data from a phase I trial. Methods: This international, multicenter, non-randomized phase IIa study (NCT01197885) investigated the efficacy and safety of repeated doses of IMAB362 (300 and 600 mg/m2) in patients with metastatic, refractory/recurrent, CLDN18.2-positive GEC (i.e. cancer of the stomach, the lower esophagus and th…
Disability assessment using Google Maps.
2021
Objectives To evaluate the concordance between Google Maps® application (GM®) and clinical practice measurements of ambulatory function (e.g., Ambulation Score (AS) and respective Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)) in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Materials and methods This is a cross-sectional multicenter study. AS and EDSS were calculated using GM® and routine clinical methods; the correspondence between the two methods was assessed. A multinomial logistic model is investigated which demographic (age, sex) and clinical features (e.g., disease subtype, fatigue, depression) might have influenced discrepancies between the two methods. Results Two hundred forty-three pwMS were …
Economic Evaluation in Neurological Physiotherapy: A Systematic Review
2021
This systematic review was carried out to compile and assess original studies that included economic evaluations of neurological physiotherapy interventions. A thorough search of PubMED, Cochrane and Embase was developed using keywords such as health economics, neurological physiotherapy and cost analysis, and studies published during the last six-year term were selected. A total of 3124 studies were analyzed, and 43 were eligible for inclusion. Among the studies analyzed, 48.8% were interventions for stroke patients, and 13.9% were focused on Parkinson’s disease. In terms of the countries involved, 46.5% of the studies included were developed in the UK, and 13.9% were from the USA. The eco…
Guidelines for Youth Sports Clubs to Develop, Implement, and Assess Health Promotion Within Its Activities
2014
The settings approach to health promotion is a world-known concept concerning settings like city, hospital, school, and workplace. The concept has also been used in some regionally specific settings, such as island, prison, or university. However, there are still many, often noninstitutional, settings that have a lot of potential but have not yet been recognized. One of the newcomers is the youth sports club, which has the potential to reach a lot of children and adolescents and is effective, via its casual educational nature based on voluntary participation. According to research, health is an important aim for most youth sports clubs, but it has not been converted into practical actions.…
Two consecutive clinical trials on cisplatin (CDDP), hepatic arterial infusion (HAI), and I.V. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) chemotherapy for unresectable co…
1991
Several phase III clinical trials demonstrated that hepatic arterial chemotherapy for unresectable colorectal liver metastases is able to provide significantly higher response rates than those obtained by systemic route: in more than 500 patients collected from 6 randomized trials, the median values of objective response rates were 55% after fluoxuridine (FUdR) continuous hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) vs. 18.5% after FUdR or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) intravenous (i.v.) chemotherapy. Furthermore, the majority of those studies reported that median survival increased in the patient subgroups treated with intrahepatic chemotherapy, even if not always statistically significant [1-6]. Certainly, FU…
Pharmacokinetic and clinical evaluation of esomeprazole and ASA for the prevention of gastroduodenal ulcers in cardiovascular patients.
2012
Low-dose aspirin (ASA, 75 - 325 mg/day) is widely used for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular (CV) diseases. However, the value of primary prevention ASA is uncertain as the reduction in occlusive events needs to be weighed against the significant increase in major bleedings. Prevention with antisecretory drugs has been proposed to reduce the incidence of ASA-induced gastrointestinal (GI) bleedings, but non-adherence to gastro-protection is of concern, as it significantly increases the risk of upper GI adverse events. Beside patients and physicians education, one approach to overcome non-adherence is the development of fixed-dose combination. This review explores the resu…
On the Number of Measurements Necessary to Assess Regional Cerebral Blood Flow by Local Laser Doppler Recordings: A Simulation Study with Data from 4…
1995
Laser Doppler fluxmetry may improve the monitoring of cortical blood flow in neurosurgical patients. So far, however, the variability of laser Doppler readings found in the cerebral cortex has prevented a consequent usage of the technique in clinical practice. The current report analyzes the regional variability of laser Doppler readings from experimental animals. Typical frequency histograms of observed flow values display non-Gaussian distributions. A simulation technique is used to assess the number of measuring sites required for valid estimates of regional cortical flow. From a total of 990 local flow measurements from 45 rabbits random samples of sizes between 5 and 100 were repeatedl…
Musculoskeletal examination in young athletes and non-athletes:the Finnish Health Promoting Sports Club (FHPSC) study
2018
ObjectivesTo determine the inter-rater repeatability of a musculoskeletal examination and to compare findings between adolescent athletes and non-athletes in Finland.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a musculoskeletal examination assessing posture, mobility and movement control was carried out by a sports and exercise medicine physician on 399 athletes aged 14–17 years and 177 non-athletes. Within 2 weeks another sports and exercise medicine physician repeated the examination for 41 adolescents to test the inter-rater repeatability.ResultsIn total, 10 of the 11 tests performed had at least moderate inter-rater reliability (κ ≥0.4 or percentage agreement >80%). Athletes more often tha…
[Insight on how to assess and improve the response to the COVID-19 pandemic].
2022
