A Comparative Evaluation of a Virtual Reality Table and a HoloLens-Based Augmented Reality System for Anatomy Training
2020
Anatomy training with real cadavers poses many practical problems for which new training and educational solutions have been developed making use of technologies based on real-time 3-D graphics. Although virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been previously used in the medical field, it is not easy to select the right 3-D technology or setup for each particular problem. For this reason, this article presents a comprehensive comparative study with 82 participants between two different 3-D interactive setups: an optical-based AR setup, implemented with a Microsoft HoloLens device, and a semi-immersive setup based on a VR Table. Both setups are tested using an anatomy training s…
Does the law matter? An empirical study on the accessibility of Finnish higher education institutions’ web pages
2022
AbstractInformation and communication technology (ICT) has made higher education available to many students in a new way. The role of online learning in higher education institutions (HEIs) has grown to an unprecedented scale due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The diversity of higher education students has increased, and accessible solutions are needed. New European and national regulations support these trends. The research reported in this paper was conducted in Finland, which is one of the leading European countries in terms of high technology and digitalisation. The aim of this research is to explore the accessibility of all Finnish HEIs’ (N = 38) landing pages based on Web Content Accessibi…
TUG-OF-WAR, MARKET MANIPULATION, AND OPTION PRICING
2014
We develop an option pricing model based on a tug-of-war game involving the the issuer and holder of the option. This two-player zero-sum stochastic differential game is formulated in a multi-dimensional financial market and the agents try, respectively, to manipulate/control the drift and the volatility of the asset processes in order to minimize and maximize the expected discounted pay-off defined at the terminal date $T$. We prove that the game has a value and that the value function is the unique viscosity solution to a terminal value problem for a partial differential equation involving the non-linear and completely degenerate parabolic infinity Laplace operator.
A Novel Priority-Based Ambulance-to-Traffic Light Communication for Delay Reduction in Emergency Rescue Operations
2019
Rescue operations are very critical and sensitive. Only one-second delay could make a serious difference between life and death. Therefore, the delay in rescue operations must be reduced as much as possible. The siren signal can be used to warn other vehicles nearby the ambulance. However, it has no impact on the traffic lights, which is normally a main cause of delay in rescue operations. For this reason, many ambulances get stuck and experience long delay at the intersections, which should not happen by any means. To enhance the rescue operations, this paper proposes a novel Priority-based Ambulance-to-Traffic Light Communication (PATCom). PATCom allows information exchanging between traf…
An Estimative Model of Automated Valuation Method in Italy
2017
The Automated Valuation Method (AVM) is a computer software program that analyzes data using an automated process. It is related to the process of appraising an universe of real estate properties, using common data and standard appraisal methodologies. Generally, the AVM is based on quantitative models (statistical, mathematical, econometric, etc.), related to the valuation of the properties gathered in homogeneous groups (by use and location) for which are collected samples of market data. The real estate data are collected regularly and systematically. Within the AVM, the proposed valuation scheme is an uniequational model to value properties in terms of widespread availability of sample …
Explainable Post-Occupancy Evaluation Using a Humanoid Robot
2020
The paper proposes a new methodological approach for evaluating the comfort condition using the concept of explainable post occupancy to make the user aware of the environmental state in which (s)he works. Such an approach was implemented on a humanoid robot with social capabilities that aims to enforce human engagement to follow recommendations. The humanoid robot helps the user to position the sensors correctly to acquire environmental measures corresponding to the temperature, humidity, noise level, and illuminance. The distribution of the last parameter due to its high variability is also retrieved by the simulation software Dialux. Using the post occupancy evaluation method, the robot …
Touch or touchless?:Evaluating usability of interactive displays for persons with autistic spectrum disorders
2019
Interactive public displays have been exploited and studied for engaging interaction in several previous studies. In this context, applications have been focused on supporting learning or entertainment activities, specifically designed for people with special needs. This includes, for example, those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In this paper, we present a comparison study aimed at understanding the difference in terms of usability, effectiveness, and enjoyment perceived by users with ASD between two interaction modalities usually supported by interactive displays: touch-based and touchless gestural interaction. We present the outcomes of a within-subject setup involving 8 ASD users…
UNIVERSITY IS ARCHITECTURE FOR THE RESEARCH EVALUATION SUPPORT
2017
The measuring of research results can be used in different ways e.g. for assignment of research grants and afterwards for evaluation of project’s results. It can be used also for recruiting or promoting research institutions’ staff. Because of a wide usage of such measurement, the selection of appropriate measures is important. At the same time there does not exist a common view which metrics should be used in this field, moreover many existing metrics that are widely used are often misleading due to different reasons, e.g. computed from incomplete or faulty data, the metric’s computation formula may be invalid or the computation results can be interpreted wrongly. To produce a good framewo…
Remarks on IEEE 802.11 DCF performance analysis
2005
This letter presents a new approach to evaluate the throughput/delay performance of the 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). Our approach relies on elementary conditional probability arguments rather than bidimensional Markov chains (as proposed in previous models) and can be easily extended to account for backoff operation more general than DCF's one.
Developing hand-worn input and haptic support for real-world target finding
2019
Locating places in cities is typically facilitated by handheld mobile devices, which draw the visual attention of the user on the screen of the device instead of the surroundings. In this research, we aim at strengthening the connection between people and their surroundings through enabling mid-air gestural interaction with real-world landmarks and delivering information through audio to retain users' visual attention on the scene. Recent research on gesture-based and haptic techniques for such purposes has mainly considered handheld devices that eventually direct users' attention back to the devices. We contribute a hand-worn, mid-air gestural interaction design with directional vibrotacti…
