ERP systems in SMEs: A literature review

2011

Published version of a chapter in Proceedings of the 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. Also available from the publisher: http://doi.dx.org/10.1109/HICSS.2011.191 This review summarizes research on enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs). Due to the close-to-saturation of ERP adoptions in large enterprises (LEs), ERP vendors now focus more on SMEs. Moreover, because of globalization, partnerships, value networks, and the huge information flow across and within SMEs nowadays, more and more SMEs are adopting ERP systems. Risks of adoption rely on the fact that SMEs have limited resources and specific characteristics that ma…

The Evolution of the Global Paper Industry: Concluding Remarks

2012

This concluding chapter summarizes the findings of the volume, and combines those findings with a comparative life-cycle perspective. We demonstrate how pulp and paper industry companies have emerged and exited in different countries. We highlight technology, raw materials, markets and products as factors explaining changes in industry structure and dominance. We demonstrate that industrial growth and the accumulation of technological knowledge require a certain maturity of political systems, regulation, and organization of research and development. Likewise, similarities between regions that lose their competitive advantage are characterized by saturation of demand, thereby weakening incen…

Value networks in cloud computing

2011

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine value networks in cloud computing. It demonstrates the kinds of value offered by such networks to firms within a given network, and considers how and why the network may change over time.Design/methodology/approachThe paper reports on a longitudinal case study, including a total of seven semi‐structured open‐ended interviews, conducted with five informants from the case firm.FindingsIt was found that cooperation in value networks provides not merely financial benefits, but also knowledge, among other intangible benefits. Value networks should be evaluated as a whole, since there may be indirect connections – i.e. the value comes not directly fr…

A relationship value perspective of social capital in networks of software SMEs

2008

Abstract Utilizing theories on social capital, business networks, social networks and relationship value, we explore the aspects that provide specific value in relationships with different actors in the software industry. The motive for the study is the assumption that some relationships are regarded as more important than others, and companies strive to focus on fewer relationships with greater outcomes. The study is guided by the premise that social capital is a foundation for relationship value, and its identified elements differ among relationships. We take the perspective of software companies and classify their relationships with business partners into three distinctive types accordin…

The Dark Side of Value Co-Creation: The Example of French Commercial Architecture

2018

Innovation is a network activity where different actors collaborate. An ethnographic survey of the French commercial architecture industry highlights the ambivalence of this co-production process. The results identify the sources of co-creation and co-destruction related both to the motivations of the actors and their interactions and examines their consequences. Retailers are encouraged to reposition themselves as project leaders, responsible for both assigning roles and mediating between the creative and technical functions. The development of new communication platforms to overcome interpretive biases between the diverse set of actors is also recommended.

A framework for IoT service experiment platforms in smart-city environments

2016

Cities provide an excellent platform for gathering and detection of massive amount of data from cities and citizens. Emergence of new digital technologies inspires not only city governments but also city residents, researchers, companies and other stakeholders in discovering and creating new innovative solutions to solve urban challenges and improve peoples´ everyday life. Developing novel Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for cities and citizens requires facilities where IoT applications and services can be tested and experimented. The challenge for many smart-city test and experimentation platforms (TEPs), like living labs, has been the lack of sustainable value creation model. This has …

Exploring End-User Reactions to Variations in the Value Proposition of Value Services

2009

Value services are most often innovations where endusers have little or no experience from using the service. Designing business models for such services is a challenging task including the design of value propositions that are perceived and interpreted through end-users’ complex value assessments. This study presents the results from a study of end-user value assessments of value proposition variations for two value services – mobile VoIP and multi play services. The study suggests a method for investigating end-user reactions to value proposition variations and presents the effects of these variations on attribute perceptions and value drivers. The main contribution of the study is method…

Management dilemmas in innovative supplier networks

2016

This paper focuses on the challenges in managing innovation within supply networks. We present an empirical study on innovation collaboration between a focal company and its supply network of small and medium sized enterprises. By analysing the case from the viewpoints of the focal company, the suppliers and investors we point out three controversial issues in innovation management within the supply network: intellectual property rights, partnering versus competition, and commitment versus independency. Furthermore, we analyse the suppliers' positions with a purchasing portfolio model and present implications for innovation management practices in supply chains. peerReviewed

AN EMPIRICAL VIEW ON VALUE THEORY AND VALUE-BASED MANAGEMENT

2016

The main economic purpose of a business organization is to create value for its owner. The value concept is a complex notion that has developed alongside human history and reflects the concerns of human society through time. As a result of the value theory, the management of value has also emerged as an essential and accompanying activity. Value-based management emerged as a management philosophy rather than a management method. It consists of a change in mindset from managing resources or output quantities to value creation. The challenge is to identify or create the value flows and act upon these within the specific business organization to have proper value management. Value creation and…
