Serum albumin and muscle measures in a cohort of healthy young and old participants
2015
Consensus on clinically valid diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia requires a systematical assessment of the association of its candidate measures of muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance on one side and muscle-related clinical parameters on the other side. In this study, we systematically assessed associations between serum albumin as a muscle-related parameter and muscle measures in 172 healthy young (aged 18–30 years) and 271 old participants (aged 69–81 year) from the European MYOAGE study. Muscle measures included relative muscle mass, i.e., total- and appendicular lean mass (ALM) percentage, absolute muscle mass, i.e., ALM/height2 and total lean mass in kilograms, handg…
p-Chlorophenylalanine treatment depresses the number of synaptic ribbon profiles in the rat pineal gland, but does not abolish their day-night rhythm
1995
It is largely unknown as to how the day/night rhythm of pineal synaptic ribbon number is regulated. Transcriptional events related to the nocturnal formation of new synaptic ribbons occur early in the morning, when pineal serotonin levels begin to increase. The present study was carried out in order to elucidate as to how altered serotonin levels affect the day/night changes in the number of synaptic ribbon profiles. To this end, male Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA, 300 mg/kg body weight, 72 hours before sacrifice), which depresses tryptophan hydroxylase activity and hence pineal serotonin levels. Control animals received saline injections. Experim…
The C(-260)T gene polymorphism in the promoter of the CD14 monocyte receptor gene is not associated with acute myocardial infarction.
2003
CD surface molecules mediates cell activation and signaling. In particular, CD14 on blood monocytes mediate monocyte/macrophage activation by lipopolysaccharide. Lipopolysaccharide and its receptor, CD14, have been implicated in atherogenesis. It has been recently shown that a C(-260)T polymorphism in the promoter of the CD14 receptor may be a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Recently this association has been questioned because no increased risk was found with the T allele, even in the homozygous state. In the present study we investigated a possible association between the C(-260)T polymorphism in the CD14 promoter and acute myocardial infarction. Two hundred and thrteen patients …
Determinants of enhanced thromboxane biosynthesis in renal transplantation
2001
Determinants of enhanced thromboxane biosynthesis in renal transplantation.BackgroundDespite great improvement in patient and graft survival, the long-term morbidity and mortality in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) are still significant, with a high incidence of cardiovascular disease-related deaths.MethodsWe investigated thromboxane (TXA2) biosynthesis and endothelial and coagulative activation in 65 patients who received a renal transplant.ResultsThe rate of TXA2 biosynthesis (urinary 11-dehydro-TXB2 excretion largely reflects platelet TXA2 production in vivo) was significantly (P < 0.0001) higher in RTRs than in healthy subjects. Plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) and thrombin-antithr…
Gender, sexuality and relationships in Young Hispanic people
2016
This study explores the relation between gender differences and sexuality among young Hispanic people. Eight hundred and forty young people from Spain and Mexico filled out a self-administered questionnaire about sexuality (sexual experience, sexual orientation, and sexual relationships) and gender (self-identification). Men in both Spain and Mexico more commonly report the practice of masturbation and vaginal sex, and are more likely to be unfaithful than women. Women in both countries report more steady partners and longer length of relationships. There were greater gender differences for Mexican men and women than for Spanish men and women in terms of sexual frequency, sexual orientation…
Global Lung Function Initiative 2012 reference values for spirometry in South Italian children
2017
Rationale Despite the widespread use of the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) 2012 reference values, there is still the need of testing their applicability in local areas. Objectives The aims of this study are to evaluate applicability of GLI reference equations in a large population-based sample of normal schoolchildren from Sicily, and to compare GLI and previous prediction equations in terms of spirometry test interpretation. Methods GLI equations were evaluated in 1243 normal schoolchildren, 49% males, aged 7â16 years, height 116â187 cm. Normality assumptions for the GLI z-scores (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC) were tested, and bootstrap confidence intervals for the mean (0 expected) and …
Regulatory and academic studies to derive reference values for human health: The case of bisphenol S
2022
We would like to thank the HBM4EU team including Petra Apel (UBA), Matthieu Meslin and Christophe Rousselle (Anses) for their scientific contribution, as well as the ANSES Working Group on endocrine disruption, and its scientific Anses coordinators François Pouzaud and Sandrine Charles.; International audience; The close structural analogy of bisphenol (BP) S with BPA, a recognized endocrine-disrupting chemical and a substance of very high concern in the European Union, highlights the need to assess the extent of similarities between the two compounds and carefully scrutinize BPS potential toxicity for human health. This analysis aimed to investigate human health toxicity data regarding BPS…
Effects of anti-cardiolipin antibodies and IVIg on annexin A5 binding to endothelial cells: implications for cardiovascular disease
2010
Anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL), including anti-cardiolipin antibodies (aCL), are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population and in patients with the anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS; Hughes syndrome). APS may be primary but is also common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The anti-coagulant protein annexin A5 (ANXA5) is implicated in CVD by interfering with phospholipids and aPL.ANXA5 binding to human umbilical venous endothelial cells (HUVECs) was determined by flow cytometry. When cells were cultured in serum from APS patients with a high aPL titre (aPL-S), binding of ANXA5 to HUVECs was reduced. Monoclonal immunoglobulin (Ig)G aPL against…
Obesity Triples the Radiation Dose of Stone Protocol Computerized Tomography
2013
Patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis are often evaluated and followed with computerized tomography. Obesity is a risk factor for nephrolithiasis. We evaluated the radiation dose of computerized tomography in obese and nonobese adults. We scanned a validated, anthropomorphic male phantom according to our institutional renal stone evaluation protocol. The obese model consisted of the phantom wrapped in 2 Custom Fat Layers (CIRS, Norfolk, Virginia), which have been verified to have the same radiographic tissue density as fat. High sensitivity metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor dosimeters were placed at 20 organ locations in the phantoms to measure organ specific radiation dose…
