Revision of the taxonomic status of <i>Synthesium elongatum</i> (Ozaki, 1935) (Brachycladiidae), an intestinal digenean of narrow-ridged …
2019
Synthesium elongatum (Brachycladiidae) is an intestinal digenean described from the finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) in Japan. Few records of this species exist and there is a remarkable morphological similarity between S. elongatum and S. tursionis, such that a synonymy between the species has been suggested previously. However, no morphological and/or molecular analysis has been carried out to clarify the taxonomic status of S. elongatum. In this study, we collected specimens of Synthesium sp. from N. asiaeorientalis in western Japan. The specimens possess lobed testes within the third quarter of the body, a round ovary, and vitellaria extending to level of uterine field, wh…
Heritability of Lifetime Income
2013
Using 15 years of data on Finnish twins, we find that 24% (54%) of the variance of women’s (men’s) lifetime income is due to genetic factors and that the contribution of the shared environment is negligible. We link these figures to policy by showing that controlling for education reduces the variance share of genetics by 5-8 percentage points; by demonstrating that income uncertainty has a genetic component half the size of its variance share in lifetime income; and by exploring how the genetic heritability of lifetime income is related to the macroeconomic environment, as measured by GDP growth and the Gini-coefficient of income inequality.
Comparison of odour sensory profiles performed by two independent trained panels following the same descriptive analysis procedures
2000
Odour sensory profiling of 28 associations of cheese ripening micro-organisms was performed by two panels of 10 assessors on two different sites. Sample preparation, training protocols and references, tasting procedures and scoring were similar in the two laboratories. Panel 2 used 10 attributes and panel 1 used these terms plus 4 extra descriptors. Analysis of variance and multivariate methods (canonical variate analysis, generalised procrustes analysis and STATIS) exhibited differences between assessors within a panel and between panels concerning the use of the scoring scale and the strength of product discrimination by attribute. Panel 1 was more sensitive to fruity notes and panel 2 to…

Uses of change-over designs and repeated measurements in sensory and consumer studies
1993
Abstract The paper illustrates two statistical methods, the design and analysis of sensory experiments taking into account the effects of serving order and previously assessed treatment and the analysis of experiments with time repeated measurements. Change-over design experiments balance both presentation order and carry-over effects. The proper analysis of variance allows the testing of these effects and the estimation of product means adjusted for carry-over effect. Repeated measurements occur when groups are being compared over time. Either a corrected split-plot or a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with measurements at different times forming the variable should be adopted t…
SORT-CC: A procedure for the statistical treatment of free sorting data
2008
International audience; A statistical approach for the analysis of free sorting data is discussed. In a first stage, the sorting data from each subject are arranged into a dataset consisting of indicator variables which reflect the memberships of the stimuli to the groups formed by the subject under consideration. Thereafter, an appropriate standardization is applied on these data and a three way statistical method, namely Common Components and Specific Weights Analysis, is performed on the datasets thus obtained. This makes it possible to take account of the individual differences among the subjects and to depict graphical displays showing the relationships among the stimuli on the one han…
Bone loss around narrow implants versus standard diameter implants: Retrospective 2-years case-control study
2019
Background The objectives were to evaluate the bone loss (BL) around narrow diameter implants (3.3 mm) 2 years after implant loading and compare with the bone loss around conventional-diameter implants (4.1 mm), as well as with clinical and anatomical variables. 2-years follow-up. Material and Methods Cases: 20 patients either gender-age, narrow implants (Straumann TM-SLA, diameter 3.3 mm); Control: 20 patients matching for gender-age, conventional implants (Straumann TM-SLA, diameter 4.1). Total 82 implants (31 narrow implants and 51 conventional implants) in 40 patients. To avoid statistical bias, a cluster of one implant per patient was randomly selected (20 narrow implants and 20 conven…
Main Steps in Image Processing and Quantification: The Analysis Workflow
2019
In the last decades, the variety of programs, algorithms, and strategies that researchers have at their disposal to process and analyze image files has grown extensively. However, these are only pointless tools if not applied with the careful planning required to achieve a succesful image analysis. In order to do so, the analyst must establish a meaningful and effective sequence of orderly operations that is able to (1) overcome all the problems derived from the image manipulation and (2) successfully resolve the question that was originally posed. In this chapter, the authors suggest a set of strategies and present a reflection on the main milestones that compose the image processing workf…
Comparison of growth, acidification and productivity of pure and mixed cultures of Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus 404 and Lactobacillus…
1994
International audience; Pure and mixed controlled-pH batch cultures of Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus 404 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 398 have been conducted. The characteristics of growth and acidification and the productivity of the cultures were compared. During the mixed cultures, the growth characteristics revealed a pronounced stimulation of S. thermophilus whereas L. bulgaricus metabolism was not significantly improved. The final total population was 1.4 to 4.9 higher than in pure cultures. The acidification characteristics were not enhanced by the mixed culture conditions. The productivity of mixed cultures was 1.7 to 2.4 times higher as compared to…
