International audience; Using daily rain-gauge records for Madagascar and nearby islands, this paper investigates rainfall intraseasonal variability at local and regional scales during the austral summer season (November–February), as well as the respective influences of recurrent convective regimes over the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Our results show a general consistency between local-scale rainfall variability in Madagascar and regional-scale features of climate variability. A spatial-temporal transmission model of 2009 A/H1N1 pandemic influenza across Chile, a country that spans a large latitudinal range, is developed to characterize the spatial variation in peak timing of that pandemic as a function of local transmission rates, spatial connectivity assumptions for Chilean regions, and the putative location of introduction of the novel virus into the country. The genetic relationships among japonica rice cultivars and landraces were studied. Most of them are of Spanish origin, and were developed and cultivated for varying time periods over more than a century. To uncover genetic diversity within each cultivar, we analysed 30 plants per cultivar or accession using 10 fluorescently labelled primer pairs for SSR markers. Six cultivars were included in the study, with accessions from four different regions of Spain of the traditional cultivar Bomba. Heart Rate Variability Recordings are a Valid Non- Invasive Tool for Evaluating Soldiers’ Stress The purpose of the present study was to investigate physiological responses and to evaluate heart rate variability as a non-invasive stress indicator during a 72-hour military field training (MFT). Ten healthy male soldiers (age 20 ± 1 yr.) participated in MFT. They slept approximately 2 h/day and ate only army field rations. During MFT, the soldiers’ mean (±SD) energy expenditure was 4646 ± 674, energy intake 2200 ± 326, and energy deficit (ED) 2405 ± 890 kcal⋅day-1.Throughout the entire training period, serum total testosterone (TES) reduced from 19.0 ± 3.0 to 12.6 ± 6.2 nmol⋅l-1 (p<0.001)
Occurrence and genotypes of Giardia isolated from lambs in Spain

Three hundred and eighty six faecal specimens were randomly collected from 1- to 3-month-old lambs from 16 farms in Spain to investigate the presence of different genotypes of Giardia duodenalis. Individual specimens were examined by IFA (Immunofluorescence assay) and beta-giardin PCR polymerase chain reaction. Cysts of G. duodenalis were shed by lambs in every flock analyzed, showing a prevalence by farms of 100%.
