Information Functionals and the Notion of (Un)Certainty: Random Matrix Theory - Inspired Case

2007

Information functionals allow one to quantify the degree of randomness of a given probability distribution, either absolutely (through min/max entropy principles) or relative to a prescribed reference one. Our primary aim is to analyze the “minimum information” assumption, which is a classic concept (R. Balian, 1968) in the random matrix theory. We put special emphasis on generic level (eigenvalue) spacing distributions and the degree of their randomness, or alternatively — information/organization deficit.

Variable-Range Approximate Systems Induced by Many-Valued L-Relations

2014

The concept of a many-valued L-relation is introduced and studied. Many-valued L-relations are used to induce variable-range quasi-approximate systems defined on the lines of the paper (A. Sostak, Towards the theory of approximate systems: variable-range categories. Proceedings of ICTA2011, Cambridge Univ. Publ. (2012) 265–284.) Such variable-range (quasi-)approximate systems can be realized as special families of L-fuzzy rough sets indexed by elements of a complete lattice.

Contextuality Analysis of the Double Slit Experiment (With a Glimpse Into Three Slits)

2018

The Contextuality-by-Default theory is illustrated on contextuality analysis of the idealized double-slit experiment. The experiment is described by a system of contextually labeled binary random variables each of which answers the question: has the particle hit the detector, having passed through a given slit (left or right) in a given state (open or closed)? This system of random variables is a cyclic system of rank 4, formally the same as the system describing the EPR/Bell paradigm with signaling. Unlike the latter, however, the system describing the double-slit experiment is always noncontextual, i.e., the context-dependence in it is entirely explainable in terms of direct influences of…

A Rayleigh-Ritz approach for postbuckling analysis of variable angle tow composite stiffened panels

2018

Abstract A Rayleigh-Ritz solution approach for generally restrained multilayered variable angle tow stiffened plates in postbuckling regime is presented. The plate model is based on the first order shear deformation theory and accounts for geometrical nonlinearity through the von Karman’s assumptions. Stiffened plates are modelled as assembly of plate-like elements and penalty techniques are used to join the elements in the assembled structure and to apply the kinematical boundary conditions. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered and Legendre orthogonal polynomials are employed to build the trial functions. A computer code was developed to implement the propose…

Comparison results for Monge - Ampère type equations with lower order terms

2003

In this paper we deal with Monge-Ampère type equations in two dimensions and, using the symmetrization with respect to the perimeter, we prove some comparison results for solutions of such equations involving the solutions of conveniently symmetrized problems.

Specific Binding of Baculoviruses Displaying gp64 Fusion Proteins to Mammalian Cells

2001

Viral vectors displaying specific ligand binding moieties have raised an increasing interest in the area of targeted gene therapy. In this report, we describe baculovirus vectors displaying either a functional single chain antibody fragment (scFv) specific for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) or the synthetic IgG binding domains (ZZ) derived from protein A of Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the vectors were engineered to incorporate a reporter gene encoding the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) under the transcriptional regulation of the cytomegalovirus (CMV) IE promoter. Display of the targeting moieties on the viral surface was achieved through fusion to the N-terminus of gp…

A Self-Contained Cylinder Drive with Indirectly Controlled Hydraulic Lock

2020

This paper presents a self-contained pump-controlled hydraulic linear drive including an innovative load holding sub-circuit. For safety critical applications such as crane manipulators, locking valves or load holding valves are enforced by legislation, but the load holding functionality may also be used actively to decrease the energy consumption for applications where the load is kept stationary for longer periods of time. The system proposed in this paper is based on a simple hydraulic architecture using two variablespeed electric motors each connected to a fixed-displacement pump. This architecture is well-known inacademic literature, but in this paper a novel load holding sub-circuit h…

Mixed finite elements for nonlocal elastic multilayered composite plate refined theories

2020

Abstract A novel mixed finite element formulation for the layerwise analysis of nonlocal multilayered composite plates is presented. The finite elements are formulated starting from the weak form of a set of governing equations for the laminate layers that were deduced via the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem. The primary variables, namely displacements and out-of-plane stresses, are expressed at layer level as through-the-thickness expansions of suitable selected functions with coefficients approximated by the finite element scheme. The through-the-thickness expansion order is considered as a free parameter. This way, finite elements for different refined higher order plate theories can …
