Variable Friction Dampers (VFD) for a modulated mitigation of the seismic response of framed structures: Characteristics and design criteria

2022

In this paper a new approach for the energy dissipation is discussed based on the use of Variable Friction Dampers (VFDs). The VFD device is borrowed from braking systems mechanical engineering, able to modulate its capability of dissipation, providing a constant pure friction force coupled with an additional (variable) damping force with the increasing of the displacement. Resorting to a previous study, the characteristics and the efficiency of the “braking” system in terms of reduction of the displacements and the restoring forces is described for SDOF systems under seismic excitations and compared with the performances achievable by classic constant friction dampers (CFDs). Then, a desig…

Development of “Design of Experiments” for modelling direct expansion air-conditioning systems under variable cooling loads and faulty operating cond…

2019

Air conditioning systems are widely adopted in the building sector and are generally responsible for high energy consumption. Part of this consumption is related to the poor maintenance adopted by plant owner over time, which causes energy performance degradation. Typical faults, such as fouling or improper refrigerant charge have been shown to heavily impact on energy consumption of these systems. In order to support cost-effective maintenance schedule, Fault Detection and Diagnosis Technique are under investigation in the world. However, in order to devise a diagnostic method a preliminary modelling of air conditioning system is due. To this aim, a test procedure which requires the least …

Nonlinear fuzzy control of a fed-batch reactor for penicillin production

2012

Abstract The process of penicillin production is characterized by nonlinearities and parameter uncertainties that make it difficult to control. In the paper the development and testing of a multivariable fuzzy control system that makes use of type-2 fuzzy sets for the control of pH and temperature are described. The performance of the type-2 fuzzy logic control system (T2FLCS) is compared by simulation with that of a type-1 fuzzy logic control system (T1FLCS) and that of a control system with traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers proposed in the literature. The fuzzy controllers are optimized using an ANFIS algorithm. The best results are obtained with the T2FLCS pa…

New considerations for modelling a MED-TVC plant under dynamic conditions

2019

Abstract The multiple-effect distillation (MED) technology is nowadays the most promising desalination process to be coupled with variable heat sources, thus leading to a more sustainable way to produce water. In order to prove the potential of this, it is of major interest to develop powerful modelling tools to predict the performance of this coupling. Only a few models have been presented so far. They show promising results but were based on some simplifying assumptions and non-physical constraints that could limit the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a MED plant. This paper presents new considerations for the dynamic modelling of a MED plant associated with a thermal vapour compressi…

Constant Heat Input Friction Stir Welding of Variable Thickness AZ31 Sheets Through In-Process Tool Rotation Control

2019

Tailored blanks characterized by variable thickness were friction stir welded (FSWed) with the aim to obtain constant joint properties along the weld seam, regardless of the thickness change. To pursue this goal, the heat input was kept constant by in-process control of tool rotation. A dedicated numerical model of the process was used to determine the tool rotation values as a function of the sheet thickness. The mechanical properties and the microstructure of the FSWed joints, produced with varying process parameters, were studied. It was found that the proposed approach can produce joints with uniform properties along the weld line in terms of stress–strain curve shape, joint strength, e…

Decision Process in Human-Agent Interaction: Extending Jason Reasoning Cycle

2019

The main characteristic of an agent is acting on behalf of humans. Then, agents are employed as modeling paradigms for complex systems and their implementation. Today we are witnessing a growing increase in systems complexity, mainly when the presence of human beings and their interactions with the system introduces a dynamic variable not easily manageable during design phases. Design and implementation of this type of systems highlight the problem of making the system able to decide in autonomy. In this work we propose an implementation, based on Jason, of a cognitive architecture whose modules allow structuring the decision-making process by the internal states of the agents, thus combini…

Speaker variables and their relation to language change

2018

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the relationship between variation processes and linguistic change and the speaker variables identified by Romance sociolinguistic studies. In particular, Romance sociolinguistics focuses on three different points of view: the socio-biographical characteristics of the speaker; the varieties related to social differences, and the relation between social groups and linguistic repertoire. In our work, we will study the socio-biographical characteristics, that Anglo-American linguistics defines as “speaker variables”, analyzing those variables more closely related in Romance studies to the diastratic vari-ation (age, sex/gender, social class). In certain ca…

Using differential geometric LARS algorithm to study the expression profile of a sample of patients with latex-fruit syndrome

2011

Natural rubber latex IgE-mediated hypersensitivity is one of the most important health problems in allergy during recent years. The prevalence of individuals allergic to latex shows an associated hypersensitivity to some plant-derived foods, especially freshly consumed fruit. This association of latex allergy and allergy to plant-derived foods is called latex-fruit syndrome. The aim of this study is to use the differential geometric generalization of the LARS algorithm to identify candidate genes that may be associated with the pathogenesis of allergy to latex or vegetable.

Design and analysis of discrete choice experiments for models with response time

2013

Settore SECS-S/02 - Statistica Per La Ricerca Sperimentale E TecnologicaA sector of conjoint analysis (experimental design in marketing research) is made of the so called choice experiments. In choice experiments respondents undergo a questionnaire which is nowadays mostly submitted through the internet. The questionnaire proposes to the respondent a sequence of choice sets each one including two or more profiles being a profile a specific combination of attribute levels. The respondent selects the preferred profile for each choice set. Responses given by a sample of respondents are analysed through suitable methods aimed to eventually find the best combination of attribute levels. One method of analysis adopts the Multinomial Logit (MLN) model. In this article the authors show the results of the MLN analysis compared with another model of analysis which uses an additional response which can be easily recorded by electronically submitted questionnaires. In practice modern survey platforms like “Qualtrics” (the one used for this work) can record the so called “response latency” i.e. the time taken by the respondent to make the choice and select the most preferred profile in the choice set. Thanks to a response latency model further refined in this work it is possible to deduce the relative weight of importance of the profiles for each choice set and respondent. This type of response can be used in place of the dichotomous choice variable in the MLN model. The two models and methods of analysis are deeply compared and it is critically discussed when it is better to use one or the other method. As a result a more reliable estimate of the optimal profile comes up implying lower risks for new investments and marketing decisions.
