Intérêts et apports de l'analyse des variables latentes pour le chercheur en sciences sociales : exemple d'application à l'économie de l'éducation

2002

The ambition of this article is modest. Initially, it aims at presenting in a sample manner the concepts that underpin the standard use of LISREL models and showing their usefulness in social science research. It then proposes, as an illustration of the theoretical presentation, an example of application relating to the use of school time in the education system.

Climate and agriculture: empirical evidence for countries and agroecological zones of the Sahel

2022

International audience; ow heterogenous is the impact of climate change across space and the type of agricultural production? In this paper, we investigate the relationship between climate change and variability, measured by temperature and rainfall, and agricultural production at the country and agroecological zone levels of the Sahel. We consider a crop production index and five cereals (maize, millet, sorghum, wheat and rice). Based on an original climate database and an agricultural production function estimated for the period 1961–2016, we show that average rainfall and temperature during the growing season indeed have highly heterogeneous effects on agricultural production, depending …

Anticipated future of Latvia and Russia during a global economic crisis: A mixed methods perspective

2014

This cross-cultural study explored subjective predictors of more positive evaluation of the future of the country during a global socioeconomic crisis. A sequential mixed-method design was chosen for an exploration of students? expectations in Russia and Latvia as countries contrasting in macro-contextual conditions. In 2009, Study 1 was designed as a thematic analysis of essays on topic ?The Future of Latvia/Russia?. The results demonstrated that the future of a country is anticipated by taking into account external influences, the present of the country, and its perceived power and stability. In 2011, Study 2 involved these themes as independent variables in a multiple regression model. T…

Nozīmes veidošana attēlos: lingvistiskā un paralingvistiskā perspektīva

2021

Cartographic Language in Thematic Maps

2015

This paper analyzes the effectiveness of maps as transmitters of information. To this end, some basic concepts concerning the properties of cartographic language are examined, with the aim of helping the reader design maps conveying geographic information as clearly as possible. It also describes the innate taste of geographers for maps –how these attract and stimulate them. Then it deals with the emergence of the Internet and the new technologies allowing massive map visualization, downloading and production. The paper is illustrated with ten thematic maps, in which visual variables (i.e. size, shape, value, color, orientation and texture) are combined with the different marks (points, lin…

Exploring twitter for csr disclosure: influence of ceo and firm characteristics in latin american companies

2018

Social networks, which are characterised by accessibility and interactivity, offer great potential for dialogue between companies and stakeholders, for example as platforms for publishing information on aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this paper, we use a synthetic index to analyse levels of CSR disclosure via Twitter, and identify explanatory variables of this disclosure by studying the demographic characteristics of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and of the company. This synthetic index was based on data for 93 companies located in the four countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru), using categories based on the 2016 Global Reporting Ini…

Why do people share knowledge in online social Q&A communities?

2017

As there is increasing volume of knowledge with the development of technology and human intelligence, it is a fast and efficient way for individuals to get knowledge from others’ sharing. Therefore, it is of significant importance to understand why people are willing to share their knowledge and in this paper the context of online social Q&A communities are discussed. Demographic variables and fathers’ involvement with their child with disabilities

2013

The main purpose of this study is to examine whether fathers’ involvement with their child with disabilities is correlated with some of the demographic variables. Data were collected from 243 Polish fathers who were married and who had at least one child with disabilities. The issue was assessed by two measures: a Questionnaire and the Father Involvement Scale. The results of the multiple regression show that fathers’ involvement is significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with the level of fathers’ concentration on the needs of their child with disabilities, the level of fathers’ cooperation with their wives, the number of years during which parents cared for a child with disabilities, time dev…
