Keypoint descriptor matching with context-based orientation estimation
2014
Abstract This paper presents a matching strategy to improve the discriminative power of histogram-based keypoint descriptors by constraining the range of allowable dominant orientations according to the context of the scene under observation. This can be done when the descriptor uses a circular grid and quantized orientation steps, by computing or providing a global reference orientation based on the feature matches. The proposed matching strategy is compared with the standard approaches used with the SIFT and GLOH descriptors and the recent rotation invariant MROGH and LIOP descriptors. A new evaluation protocol based on an approximated overlap error is presented to provide an effective an…
Convergence of Boobnov-Galerkin Method Exemplified
2004
In this Note, Boobnov–Galerkin’s method is proved to converge to an exact solution for an applied mechanics problem. We address in detail the interrelation of Boobnov–Galerkin method and the exact solution in the beam deflection problems. Namely, we show the coincidence of these two methods for clamped–clamped boundary conditions, using an alternative set of functions proposed by Filonenko-Borodich.12 Received 25 February 2003; accepted for publication 13 March 2004. RNA-binding activity of the rat calmodulin-binding PEP-19 protein and of the long PEP-19 isoform
2012
Synthesis of H1˚ histone protein, in the developing rat brain, seems to be regulated mainly at the post-transcriptional level. Since regulation of RNA metabolism depends on a series of RNA-binding proteins, we have been searching for RNA-binding proteins involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of the H1˚ gene. We recently reported isolation, from a cDNA expression library, of an insert encoding a novel protein, the C-terminal half of which is identical to that of PEP-19, a brain-specific protein involved in calcium metabolism. The novel protein was called long PEP-19 isoform (LPI). Herein we show that LPI, as well as PEP-19, can bind H1˚ RNA. Moreover, in order to improve production…
On the divide between animate and inanimate
2015
Vitalism was abandoned already for a long time ago, yet the impression that animate beings differ in some fundamental way from inanimate objects continues to thrive. Here, we argue that scale free patterns, found throughout nature, present convincing evidence that this demarcation is only imaginary. Therefore, all systems ought to be regarded alike, i.e., all are consuming free energy in least time. This way evolutionary processes can be understood as a series of changes from one state to another, so that flows of energy themselves naturally select those ways and means, such as species and societies or gadgets and galaxies to consume free energy in the least time in quest of attaining therm…
Finite Alphabet Control of Logistic Networks with Discrete Uncertainty
2014
We consider logistic networks in which the control and disturbance inputs take values in finite sets. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of robustly control invariant (hyperbox) sets. We show that a stronger version of this condition is sufficient to guarantee robust global attractivity, and we construct a counterexample demonstrating that it is not necessary. Being constructive, our proofs of sufficiency allow us to extract the corresponding robust control laws and to establish the invariance of certain sets. Finally, we highlight parallels between our results and existing results in the literature, and we conclude our study with two simple illustrative exampl…
Real quadrics in C n , complex manifolds and convex polytopes
2006
In this paper, we investigate the topology of a class of non-Kähler compact complex manifolds generalizing that of Hopf and Calabi-Eckmann manifolds. These manifolds are diffeomorphic to special systems of real quadrics Cn which are invariant with respect to the natural action of the real torus (S1)n onto Cn. The quotient space is a simple convex polytope. The problem reduces thus to the study of the topology of certain real algebraic sets and can be handled using combinatorial results on convex polytopes. We prove that the homology groups of these compact complex manifolds can have arbitrary amount of torsion so that their topology is extremely rich. We also resolve an associated wall-cros…
Cardinal Invariants for the $G_\delta$ topology
2017
We prove upper bounds for the spread, the Lindel\"of number and the weak Lindel\"of number of the $G_\delta$-topology on a topological space and apply a few of our bounds to give a short proof to a recent result of Juh\'asz and van Mill regarding the cardinality of a $\sigma$-countably tight homogeneous compactum.
Un nouvel invariant des algèbres de Lie et des super-algèbres de Lie quadratiques
2011
In this thesis, we defind a new invariant of quadratic Lie algebras and quadratic Lie superalgebras and give a complete study and classification of singular quadratic Lie algebras and singular quadratic Lie superalgebras, i.e. those for which the invariant does not vanish. The classification is related to adjoint orbits of Lie algebras o(m) and sp(2n). Also, we give an isomorphic characterization of 2-step nilpotent quadratic Lie algebras and quasi-singular quadratic Lie superalgebras for the purpose of completeness. We study pseudo-Euclidean Jordan algebras obtained as double extensions of a quadratic vector space by a one-dimensional algebra and 2-step nilpotent pseudo-Euclidean Jordan al…
The Clinical Significance of Unknown Sequence Variants in BRCA Genes.
2010
Abstract: Germline mutations in BRCA1/2 genes are responsible for a large proportion of hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancers. Many highly penetrant predisposition alleles have been identified and include frameshift or nonsense mutations that lead to the translation of a truncated protein. Other alleles contain missense mutations, which result in amino acid substitution and intronic variants with splicing effect. The discovery of variants of uncertain/unclassified significance (VUS) is a result that can complicate rather than improve the risk assessment process. VUSs are mainly missense mutations, but also include a number of intronic variants and in-frame deletions and insertions. Over …
Functional annotation of genes overlapping copy number variants in autistic patients: focus on axon pathfinding.
2010
We have used Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway analyses to uncover the common functions associated to the genes overlapping Copy Number Variants (CNVs) in autistic patients. Our source of data were four published studies [1- 4]. We first applied a two-step enrichment strategy for autism-specific genes. We fished out from the four mentioned studies a list of 2928 genes overall overlapping 328 CNVs in patients and we first selected a sub-group of 2044 genes after excluding those ones that are also involved in CNVs reported in the Database of Genomic Variants (enrichment step 1). We then selected from the step 1-enriched list a sub-group of 514 genes each of which was found to be deleted or dupli…
