A Regional Geography Approach to Understanding the Environmental Changes as a Consequence of the COVID-19 Lockdown in Highly Populated Spanish Cities
2021
Spain has been highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is reflected at different scales. From an economic point of view, lockdowns and the reduction of activities have damaged the country (e.g., complete lockdown from March 13 to June 21, 2020). However, it is not clear if the associated environmental impacts could be observed in 2020. Currently, studies on the effects of the lockdown (e.g., decrease in economic activities, transport and social communication) on specific parameters related to climate change, such as air temperature or air pollution, due to a drastic decrease in human activities are rare. They are focused on specific cities and short periods of time. Therefore, the m…
Occurrence of currently used pesticides in ambient air of Centre Region (France)
2010
Ambient air samples were collected, from 2006 to 2008 at three rural and two urban sites in Centre Region (France) and analyzed for 56 currently used pesticides (CUPS), of which 41 were detected. The four CUPs most frequently detected were the herbicides trifluralin, acetochlor and pendimethalin and the fungicide chlorothalonil, which were found with frequencies ranging between 52 and 78%, and with average concentrations of 1.93, 1.32, 1.84 and 12.15 ng m(-3), respectively. Among the detected pesticides, concentrations of eight fungicides (spiroxamine, fenpropimorph, cyprodinil, tolyfluanid, epoxiconazole, vinchlozolin, fluazinam, fludioxinil), two insecticides (propargite, ethoprophos), an…
The genomic and clinical landscape of fetal akinesia
2020
International audience; Fetal akinesia has multiple clinical subtypes with over 160 gene associations, but the genetic etiology is not yet completely understood. Methods: In this study, 51 patients from 47 unrelated families were analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques aiming to decipher the genomic landscape of fetal akinesia (FA).Results: We have identified likely pathogenic gene variants in 37 cases and report 41 novel variants. Additionally, we report putative pathogenic variants in eight cases including nine novel variants. Our work identified 14 novel disease-gene associations for fetal akinesia: ADSSL1, ASAH1, ASPM, ATP2B3, EARS2, FBLN1, PRG4, PRICKLE1, ROR2, SETBP1…
An undermined therapeutic alliance: A case study
2021
Seeking help and assistance can prove to be a frustrating experience for intersex individuals: physicians and psychologists can be misinformed about variations of sex characteristics (VSC) and their practice may have a detrimental effect on the physical and psychological wellbeing of indivi- duals with VSC. This paper focuses on how previous negative experiences, such as early genital cosmetic surgery and unaware clinical management, could negatively affect psychotherapeutic relationships. Its principal aims are to: 1) identify which elements in clinical management of VSC may cause difficulties in building a therapeutic alliance and 2) identify which elements may promote the construction an…
Predictive chromosomal clusters of synchronous and metachronous brain metastases in clear cell renal cell carcinoma
2014
Synchronous (early) and metachronous (late) brain metastasis (BM) events of sporadic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) (n = 148) were retrospectively analyzed using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Using oncogenetic tree models and cluster analyses, chromosomal imbalances related to recurrence-free survival until BM (RFS-BM) were analyzed. Losses at 9p and 9q appeared to be hallmarks of metachronous BM events, whereas an absence of detectable chromosomal changes at 3p was often associated with synchronous BM events. Correspondingly, k-means clustering showed that cluster 1 cases generally exhibited low copy number chromosomal changes that did not involve 3p. Cluster 2 cases ha…
3D CT scan for perioperative identification of anatomical variations of lungs.
2016
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate anatomical lung variations and vascular patterns using volumetric 3D computed tomography (CT) representations. Methods & results: We considered 24 major thoracic surgery performed in our ward. In these, we discovered some interesting anatomical variations of the main pulmonary fissures. These findings were not visible on the plain x-ray or during routine examination of a preoperative CT scan. After re-examination of 3D CT scan reconstruction the anatomical variations were detected. Discussion: General thoracic surgeons must familiarize themselves with anatomical variations in lungs. 3D images may aid the general thoracic surgeon in performin…
A boundary min-max principle as a tool for boundary element formulations
1991
Abstract A min-max principle for elastic solids, expressed in terms of the unknown boundary displacements and tractions, is presented. It is shown that its Euler-Lagrange equations coincide with the classical boundary integral equations for displacements and for tractions. This principle constitutes a suitable starting point for a symmetric sign-definite formulation of the boundary element method.
Attitudes towards English variations : Finnish high school students’ views on American English, British English and Australian English
2010
Englanti on maailman kieli, joka kuuluu jokapäiväiseen suomalaiseen katukuvaan ja englannin eri variaatioita esiintyy ympäri maailmaa. Ihmiset muodostavat omat käsityksensä ja asenteensa näitä variaatioita kohtaan henkilökohtaisten kokemustensa ja maailmankuvansa kautta. Aiemmissa tämän tieteenalan tutkimuksissa on keskitytty pääasiassa asenteisiin, joita suomalaisilla on eri kielistä yleisesti. Aiemmat tutkimukset ovat keskittyneet yksittäisten ihmisten välisiin mielipide-eroihin, eikä niinkään sukupuolten välisiin asenne-eroihin. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin sitä, millaisia erilaisia asenteita suomalaisilla lukion kolmasluokkalaisilla oppilailla on englannin kielen eri variaatioita k…
An initial comparative map of copy number variations in the goat (Capra hircus) genome
2010
Abstract Background The goat (Capra hircus) represents one of the most important farm animal species. It is reared in all continents with an estimated world population of about 800 million of animals. Despite its importance, studies on the goat genome are still in their infancy compared to those in other farm animal species. Comparative mapping between cattle and goat showed only a few rearrangements in agreement with the similarity of chromosome banding. We carried out a cross species cattle-goat array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH) experiment in order to identify copy number variations (CNVs) in the goat genome analysing animals of different breeds (Saanen, Camosciata delle Alpi,…
