Conceptual evaluation of methods for engineering situational ISD methods

2006

In the past decades a large variety of techniques and methods have been introduced for software engineering (SE) and information system development (ISD). Despite this plurality, there is a need in organizations and projects to customize methods that match with their specific needs. Method engineering (ME) is the process by which a situational method is developed, customized and configured. ME work has appeared to be difficult and burdensome to carry out in practice. One reason for this is a lack of adequate methodical support. In this article, we profile and evaluate conceptually, using a contextual framework as a basis, seven comprehensive ME artifacts (i.e. techniques, procedures and met…

Annihilation Operators for Exponential Spaces in Subdivision

2022

We investigate properties of differential and difference operators annihilating certain finite-dimensional subspaces of exponential functions in two variables that are connected to the representation of real-valued trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. Although exponential functions appear in a variety of contexts, the motivation behind this work comes from considering subdivision schemes with the capability of preserving those exponential functions required for an exact description of surfaces parametrized in terms of trigonometric and hyperbolic functions.

Agency displays in stories of drunk driving: Subjectivity, authorship, and reflectivity

2012

This study examined 30 stories of drunk driving (DD) recounted by repeat offenders in the early phase of a court-mandated counseling program. The focus of analysis was on displays of agency in the narrators’ portrayal of themselves as protagonists in the stories. The expressions of subjectivity, authorship, and reflectivity were considered as constructors of agency positions. In the analysis of the videotaped and transcribed stories, five story types of agency were found. They displayed the narrator-protagonists’ agency positions as either unconcerned, weak, egotistical, akratic, or disowned. The quality of telling is viewed as expressing the narrators’ problematic agency positions, readine…

SUSTAINABLE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT FROM PERSPECTIVE OF CITIZENS: SALASPILS MUNICIPALITY (LATVIA) CASE

2015

Conditions are very different in the different parts of any country, and the quality of life as well as the impacts produced on the environment depend on a variety of local factors of environmental, economic and cultural nature, and every action must cope with such local conditions, traditions, and attitudes. Thereby one of the approaches on assessment of sustainable development could be based on subjective evaluation of citizens of certain municipality. During 2010-2012 in Salaspils municipality (Latvia) the SPIRAL methodology for measurement of subjective well-being indicators using co-responsibility approach was approbated, which was the basis for establishing the more efficient dialogue…

The economies of the Baltic Sea Region in relation to green economics, with particular focus on Latvia: environmental sustainability and well-being

2010

Economic activity has an impact on the environment, but the potential degree of this impact will depend on several factors which are mainly determined by the technology used. This paper analyses the potential environmental impact the economies of the Baltic Sea Region have on their respective countries. The Baltic Sea Region countries are characterised by two economic development scenarios, namely, market and transition economies. Income levels, applied technologies and environmental management practices in these countries differ considerably, and affect a variety of complex indices. These are used to evaluate a country's overall environmental situation and the well being of its inhabitants…

Understanding Action and Adventure Sports Participation—An Ecological Dynamics Perspective

2017

© 2017, The Author(s). Previous research has considered action and adventure sports using a variety of associated terms and definitions which has led to confusing discourse and contradictory research findings. Traditional narratives have typically considered participation exclusively as the pastime of young people with abnormal characteristics or personalities having unhealthy and pathological tendencies to take risks because of the need for thrill, excitement or an adrenaline ‘rush’. Conversely, recent research has linked even the most extreme forms of action and adventure sports to positive physical and psychological health and well-being outcomes. Here, we argue that traditional framewor…

Tajikistan: Language Situation

2006

Tajikistan, an independent Central Asian state since 1991, has Tajik, a variety of Persian, as its national language. Turkic-speaking groups, mainly Uzbeks, make up one fourth of the population. Eastern Iranian languages are still spoken in Tajikistan. Current efforts include the replacement of Russian by Tajik as the language of government and higher education as well as the reduction of Russian and Uzbek elements in Tajik.

A critical form of Celtis tree (Ulmaceae) occurring in Sicily

2021

The morphological variability of the Sicilian population of Celtis australis is examined. On the basis of leaf and branching characters, recurrent in various trees growing both in natural and urban environment, a new variety is recognized and described, indicated as Celtis australis var. panormitana. The most significant differential characters and the ecology of the new taxon are reported. Finally, the taxonomic affinities with the two other conspecific taxa are recalled. At the current state of knowledge the new variety is endemic to Sicily.

Pre-service Science Teacher Preparation in Europe: Comparing Pre-service Teacher Preparation Programs in England, France, Finland and Cyprus

2015

A number of reports recently identify that the quality of science education in a number of European countries is lower than expected. One of the reasons for the apparent underachievement in this generally economically prosperous continent might be a pedagogy of science that lacks variety, or a pedagogy that is less engaging than other subjects. Given the diversity of European education systems, the purpose of this paper is to present aspects of four pre-service teacher preparation programs illustrating the similarities and differences that emerge. Specifically, we present the teacher preparation programs in England, Finland, France and Cyprus.

Team communication in the workplace

2019

In today’s organizations, team and group communication is an essential part of work, and it is loaded with expectations. Despite the expectation that teamwork offers an answer to the intense demands of today’s dynamic, ubiquitously digital working life, taking advantage of its benefits is neither simple nor well understood. Teams represent various types of collaboration. Teams can be understood by observing their structures, practices, and processes as well as their functionality and goal achievement. This chapter provides an understanding of the multifaceted reality of groups and teams as it manifests in interaction. The chapter analyzes a variety of team phenomena in order to enhance and …
