Prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and fetal growth in a cohort of pregnant women

2012

Objectives Scant evidence is available on effects of air pollution on longitudinally measured fetal biometry, and thus it remains unclear as to whether there are critical windows of exposure or specificity of effects. Our objective was to examine the association between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during pregnancy and fetal and neonatal anthropometry in a cohort of Spanish women. Methods Temporally adjusted land-use regression was used to estimate exposure to NO2 at home addresses. Biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) were evaluated in each trimester by ultrasound. As neonatal outcomes, weight, length and head cir…

OMNI-DRL: Learning to Fly in Forests with Omnidirectional Images

2022

Perception is crucial for drone obstacle avoidance in complex, static, and unstructured outdoor environments. However, most navigation solutions based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) use limited Field-Of-View (FOV) images as input. In this paper, we demonstrate that omnidirectional images improve these methods. Thus, we provide a comparative benchmark of several visual modalities for navigation: ground truth depth, ground truth semantic segmentation, and RGB images. These exhaustive comparisons reveal that it is superior to use an omnidirectional camera to navigate with classical DRL methods. Finally, we show in two different virtual forest environments that adapting the convolution to…

In vivo antioxidant treatment protects against bleomycin-induced lung damage in rats

2003

1. This study examines the activity of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine on bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats with emphasis on the early inflammatory phase. 2. Rats receiving N-acetylcysteine (300 mg kg(-1) day(-1), intraperitoneal) had less augmented lung wet weight, and lower levels of proteins, lactate dehydrogenase, neutrophil and macrophage counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung myeloperoxidase activity with a betterment of histological score at 3 days postbleomycin. 3. A diminished lung GSH/GSSG ratio and augmented lipid hydroperoxides were observed 3 days postbleomycin. These changes were attenuated by N-acetylcysteine. Alveolar macrophages from bleomycin-exposed r…

Gravity-induced liquid crystal phase transitions of colloidal platelets.

2004

he influence of gravity on a suspension of sterically stabilized colloidal gibbsite platelets is studied. An initially isotropic-nematic biphasic sample of such a suspension develops a columnar phase on the bottom on prolonged standing. This phenomenon is described using a simple osmotic compression model. We performed Monte Carlo simulations of cut spheres with aspect ratio L/D = 1/15 and took data from the literature to supply the equations of state required for the model. We find that the model describes the observed three-phase equilibrium quite well.

OMC: An Optical Monitoring Camera for INTEGRAL

2003

The Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) will observe the optical emission from the prime targets of the gammaray instruments onboard the ESA mission INTEGRAL, with the support of the JEM-X monitor in the X-ray domain. This capability will provide invaluable diagnostic information on the nature and the physics of the sources over a broad wavelength range. Its main scientific objectives are: (1) to monitor the optical emission from the sources observed by the gamma- and X-ray instruments, measuring the time and intensity structure of the optical emission for comparison with variability at high energies, and (2) to provide the brightness and position of the optical counterpart of any gamma- or X-r…

EU transition in power sector: How RES affects the design and operations of transmission power systems

2019

In the past, much of Europe's electricity grid network has been designed in consideration of the locations of conventional generation plants. However, a large share of today's renewables production – notably variable wind and solar – does not correspond to this grid architecture. Interconnectors, in addition to internal infrastructure, are key to creating new electricity corridors to connect areas of surplus to areas of scarcity. In this context, in 2014 the European Council, in recognizing that a fundamental role of transmission infrastructure is to enable the integration of areas of high renewable energy potential with main consumption areas, endorsed the proposal by the European Commissi…

Modeling and field-experiments identification of vertical dynamics of vehicle with active anti-roll bar

2020

This paper deals with modeling and identification of vertical dynamics of the ground vehicle equipped with two active anti-roll torsion bars. A series of field tests of a full-scale drive have been performed, from which multiple displacement and acceleration data of the unsprung and sprung masses have been collected for each vehicle corner. The standard full vertical vehicle model is extended by the developed model of an active anti-roll torsion bar and valve-controlled semi-active shock absorbing damper. Along with the three-dimensional damping map, the nonlinear progressive stiffness of the elastomer-based decoupling unit are identified from the available data. The multi-channel and multi…

Clustering and viscosity in a shear flow of a particulate suspension

2003

A shear flow of particulate suspension is analyzed for the qualitative effect of particle clustering on viscosity using a simple kinetic clustering model and direct numerical simulations. The clusters formed in a Couette flow can be divided into rotating chainlike clusters and layers of particles at the channel walls. The size distribution of the rotating clusters is scale invariant in the small-cluster regime and decreases rapidly above a characteristic length scale that diverges at a jamming transition. The behavior of the suspension can qualitatively be divided into three regimes. For particle Reynolds number Re(p) less than or approximately equal 0.1, viscosity is controlled by the char…

Direct numerical simulation of MR suspension: The role of viscous and magnetic interactions between particles

2009

A numerical method is developed with aim to simulate the magnetorheological (MR) suspension taking into account realistic magnetic forces. The MR suspension is described by spherical particles with nonlinear magnetic properties suspended in a shear flow. Inertia effects, Brownian motion and buoyancy forces are neglected. The hydrodynamic interaction between close particles is taken into account approximately. Results of some test simulations are presented.
