Leveraging National Auditing Criteria to Implement Cybersecurity Safeguards for the Automotive Emergency Response Vehicles : A case study from Finland
2017
A modern Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) is a combination of emergency services and functional mobile office on the wheels. The mobile office is aiming to leverage the benefits of fixed office while moving on the wheels. Researchers have observed that emergency response personnel including Law Enforcement Authorities (LEAs), Police and border guards, could be on the duty while having possibility to use same services compared to fixed office. On the one hand, demand of mobile office has significantly improved the emergency response services. On the other hand, emergency vehicle designers should rethink the demand of users. This resulted into modern standard emergency response vehicle with t…
Real-time smoothing of car-following data through sensor-fusion techniques
2011
Abstract Observation of vehicles kinematics is an important task for many applications in ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). It is at the base of both theoretical analyses and application developments, especially in case of positioning and tracing/tracking of vehicles, car-following analyses and models, navigation and other ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information Systems), ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) systems, CAS and CWS (Collision Avoidance Systems and Collision Warning Systems) and other ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems). Modern technologies supply low-cost devices able to collect time series of kinematic and positioning data with medium to very high frequency. Even more da…
A Feasibility Study for the Transition to Electric Mobility in the Island of Favignana
2021
The energy transition and climate neutrality are a short time scenario as climate concerns are rising fast. Small islands are natural microgrids in which the energy transition is subjected to economic and regulatory constraints and highly challenged by technical issues. As a first step, the Mediterranean island of Favignana has been considered in this study, to assess how electric mobility could impact the power system. According to the plans from the local decision makers, the island is moving towards a full public electric mobility in the near term, also due to the participation in the BloRin project. For this reason, a feasibility study about the technical and environmental impact of ele…
Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles: combining Environmental and Social Life Cycle Assessments
2018
Electric vehicles (xEV) are a key low carbon technology for mobility. Although xEV have no tailpipe emissions, the production of traction batteries leads to environmental and social burdens. In this context, authors assess the environmental and social impacts of a cell of Lithium ion traction battery in order to identify the most relevant aspects and the potential added value of performing both the assessments. Results show the relevance of the resources in terms of both environmental and social impacts. Moreover, the social assessment results pointed out the relevance of the geographical boundaries, often overlooked for in the environmental analysis. The combination of both the assessment …

Integrating vehicle specific power methodology and microsimulation in estimating emissions on urban roundabouts
2021
In this study pollutant emissions were estimated from VSP modal emission rates and the distribution of time spent in each VSP mode obtained from the speed profiles both gathered in the field and simulated in AIMSUN at a sample of urban roundabouts. The versatility of the micro-simulation model for a calibration aimed at improving accuracy of emissions estimates was tested in order to ensure that second-by-second trajectories experienced in the field by a test vehicle through the sampled roundabouts properly reflected the simulated speed profiles. The first results which the thesis will refer, confirmed the feasibility of the smart approach that integrates the use of field-observed and simul…
Design of a Smart Car Park with PV generation and BESS for Grid-on and Grid-off Operation. The SMARTEP Project
2022
The paper presents the design state of a smart car park shelter for electric vehicle in the campus of the University of Palermo. The car park is supplied by the main grid and by a 40 kW photovoltaic system and is equipped with a Li-ion battery storage system with capacity 42 kWh. The hybrid plant is designed in order to operate both in connection with the main grid and in stand-alone mode, supplying, in this case, all car park's loads and providing one recharge to an electric vehicle. Moreover, the energy storage system and, eventually, the battery of one or more cars with V2G technologies, can be managed for providing ancillary services to the grid. In the paper, the design of the system a…
Feature Extractors for Describing Vehicle Routing Problem Instances
2016
The vehicle routing problem comes in varied forms. In addition to usual variants with diverse constraints and specialized objectives, the problem instances themselves – even from a single shared source - can be distinctly different. Heuristic, metaheuristic, and hybrid algorithms that are typically used to solve these problems are sensitive to this variation and can exhibit erratic performance when applied on new, previously unseen instances. To mitigate this, and to improve their applicability, algorithm developers often choose to expose parameters that allow customization of the algorithm behavior. Unfortunately, finding a good set of values for these parameters can be a tedious task that…
Injury and Throwing Distance in Teenage Cyclist- Vehicle Crash
2016
The study of the injury caused by vehicle-teenage cyclist crash is presented in this paper. The results of the crash with three vehicles: sedan, SUV and Pick up are compared. Three different positions are analyzed: front, rear and lateral position. The injury on the cyclist head is examined by HIC criterion, in the way indicated by the rules. A comparison is done between the results of the simulations for Pick up, SUV and sedan, concluding that the injury of the head is more dangerous for Pick-up impact than SUV or the sedan, but only at greater speed than 40 km/h. Teenage cyclist is more likely to suffer an injury to the chest in rear impacts with the sedan, because 3 ms values remain abov…
