Pleocytosis in cerebrospinal fluid and infiltration of the leptomeningeal tissue have been studied after injection of ferritin into the subarachnoid space (SAS) of cats. The most important source of granulocytes in the leptomeninges are the relatively large veins of the pia mater, which have very thin walls. Passing between the lining cells of the pia mater the granulocytes leave the connective tissue space of the pia mater and reach the SAS. Leukodiapedesis has also been observed in veins crossing the SAS. During this process, gaps between the lining cells of the perivascular leptomeningeal sheath may develop. The author has studied, in a group of 40 dissections on cadavers of individuals of different ages, the main “critical zones” of entrapment of some terminal branches of the lumbo-sacral plexus, which include canals (fibrous, osteo-fibrous, fibro-muscular), intervals (intermuscular, fibro-muscular, musculo-ligamentous), rings (fibrous or fibro-muscular) and foramina. They provide the topographical anatomical basis for possible compressive phenomena of the nerves of the lower limb.

This study was aimed at the assessment of retinal abnormalities in multiple sclerosis patients in the context of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency using OCT of the retina and the optic nerve. Objective To determine whether pulsed Doppler examination of the ductus venosus in rat fetuses could damage exposed tissue. Methods On gestational day 18, the livers of a mean of approximately five fetuses per mother (n = 5.14, SD = 1.6), in a cohort of 35 pregnant female rats, were exposed individually to pulsed Doppler and these were considered the 'exposed group'. The remaining fetuses in each pregnant rat (n = 5.16, SD = 2.1) formed the 'control group'.
