The downward shift of the mean velocity profile in the logarithmic region, known as roughness function, $$\Delta U^+$$ , is the major macroscopic effect of roughness in wall bounded flows. The motion of Earth's tectonic plates—the lithosphere—is driven by the subduction of relatively cold and dense oceanic plates into the mantle. The resulting forces drive the motions of continental plates, but the manner in which this happens depends on the effective viscosities of the lithosphere and mantle. On page 1515 of this issue, Liu and Hasterok ( 1 ) discuss a novel method of constraining viscosities of the lithosphere from geophysical data.

Age-Correlated Incremental Consideration of Velocity Information in Relative Time-to-Arrival Judgments

International audience; One hundred fifty-one children and 43 adults judged which of 2 cartoon birds would be the first to arrive at a common finish line. Objects moved unidirectionally along parallel trajectories, either at the same or different speeds, and disappeared at different distances from the goal. Overall, 9-10-year-old children performed as well as adults, but 4-5- and 6-8-year-olds erred significantly more often. On trials for which distance to goal at disappearance was a valid cue, 4-5-year-olds scored 80% correct, and no differences were seen between 6-10-year-olds and adults. Monoclinic model shear zones

Abstract Although many ductile shear zones are supposed to have developed by approximately simple shear flow, some must have formed under different conditions. A few types of such ‘non-simple shear zones’ have been proposed in the literature such as transpression-, transtension- and stretching-shear zones. This paper presents a full three-dimensional kinematic model of shear zones with monoclinic flow geometry. Monoclinic shear zone types can be classified according to flow parameters, and according to the geometry and orientation of accumulating finite strain. There is an increasing interest of using ultrasonic guided waves to assess long cortical bones. In particular, a method of ultrasonic estimation of cortical thickness based on the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW), generally consistent with the A0 Lamb mode, has proven to be promising in vitro and modeling studies. Soft-tissue coating on top of the bone makes, however, the related in vivo application challenge. Visibility of FFGW on top of the soft tissue is not good due to the characteristic displacement profile of this mode, and due to its relatively high attenuation in the bone and surrounding tissue. Spin texture motion in antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic nanowires

We propose a Hamiltonian dynamics formalism for the current and magnetic field driven dynamics of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domain walls in one dimensional systems. To demonstrate the power of this formalism, we derive Hamilton equations of motion via Poisson brackets based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, and add dissipative dynamics via the evolution of the energy. We use this approach to study current induced domain wall motion and compute the drift velocity. The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of brain type isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CK-BB) as a possible indicator of a pre-existing intrauterine brain-cell damage in cord blood sera of fetuses with preceding absent or reverse end-diastolic flow velocities of the umbilical arteries (AREDFV).
