We investigated the influence of major cardiovascular risk factors (smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus) on the association between angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism and echocardiographic left ventricular mass in 225 patients with sustained hypertension, assessed by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. When the study population was analyzed as a whole, the 3 ACE genotypes did not differ in left ventricular mass (II, 47 g/m2.7; ID, 49 g/m2.7; DD, 51 g/m2.7; p = NS). Han-Wistar rats were exposed to a 194-200 h swimming protocol which caused a significant increase in the cardiac weight. The levels of various tissue antioxidants were assayed from the myocardium of the right ventricle and from the left ventricle (subendo- and subepimyocardium). Evidence for a role of phospholipase D (PLD) in cellular proliferation and differentiation is accumulating. We studied PLD activity and expression in normal and hypertrophic rat and human hearts. In rat heart, abdominal aortic banding (constriction to 50% of original lumen) caused hypertrophy in the left ventricle (as shown by weight index and ANP expression) by about 15% after 30 days without histological evidence of fibrosis or signs of decompensation and in the right ventricle after 100 days. The effect of angiotensin II-induced hypertension on selected biochemical parameters was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats. Angiotensin II infusion at rates of 41.7 micrograms h-1 kg-1 and 12.5 micrograms h-1 kg-1 for 2, 5, 10 and 15 days elevated the systolic blood pressure from 143 +/- 7 mmHg to 215-230 mmHg (P less than 0.001) and 185-195 mmHg (P less than 0.001), respectively. The functional role of alpha-adrenoceptors was investigated in different parts of the rabbit heart. Phenylephrine (PE) caused a marked increase in force of contraction (Fc) and a prolongation of the action potential (AP) in preparations from the left atrium and the right ventricle. Abstract Acquired left ventricular-right atrial communication ( Gerbode-type defect) is a rare complication of infective endocarditis. Although transesophageal echocardiography remains the technique of choice for the evaluation of complications of endocarditis this case highlights the usefulness of cardiac computed tomography in this scenario, particularly in cases where assessment of coronary anatomy is required before surgery.

Twelve patients with a new complete bundle branch block after coronary artery bypass grafting underwent transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The results of TEE were compared with the pre-operative ventriculography, CK-MB isoenzyme time-release curves and clinical course.
