Pseudo-relatives and their left-periphery

2016

In this article I propose a new analysis of Pseudo-Relative clauses ('PRs') within the Cartographic model (Rizzi 1997 a.o.). Heretofore, the apparently contradictory behaviour of PRs in the syntactic tests used to determine their structure has been very problematic. Based on new data from Italian, I show that PRs are Small Clauses with a ForceP projection. Moreover, I explain the inconsistent results of the syntactic tests by claiming that PRs can be embedded in different syntactic environments. More specifically, they can be inserted as 'bare' Small Clauses into the matrix clause or be part of a bigger structure: i.e., a Complex-DP, a locative adjunction or a 'Larsonian' structure.

LA GRAMMATICALIZZAZIONE DEI VERBI DI MOVIMENTO IN SICILIANO: IL CASO DI IRI ‘ANDARE’ IN FUNZIONE DIRETTIVA

2019

Contact between Italian and dialect in Sicily: the case of phrasal verb constructions

2017

The Phrasal Verb Constructions (PVCs) are an interesting example of the intertwining between Italian and dialects of Italy. These constructions are formed by a verbal base (especially of motion), and a locative or direction marking particle and exist in standard Italian as well as in regional varieties of Italian and dialects (i.e. Italian andare via 'go away', mettere giù 'put down'). Because of their progressive diffusion in different varieties of regional Italian, PVCs can be construed as an emerging feature increasingly accepted in regional standards. In this perspective, PVCs are an example of the contact between varieties that contribute to the restandardization of contemporary Italia…

Repertori paremiologici tra meteorologia, paesaggio agrario, mondo animale e spazialità geografico-culturale

2020

The work focusses on a “geolinguistic” analysis of a group of proverbs from the area of Madonie (Sicily) collected in Sottile-Genchi (2011). The aim of the article is to shed light on the relation between the paremiologic repertoire and the main geographic and cultural features characterising the geographic area. In particular, this aspect implies both a paremiologic (micro)variation depending on the geomorphological peculiarities of each spot and an analysis of the relationship among those (humans and animals) who share the same places by which discover old superstitions and a specific socio-cultural background.

Towards a classification of Sicilian object experiencer psych-verbs.

2021

In this article we report the results of two surveys of object experiencer psych verbs conducted under the auspices of the Sicilian Linguistic Atlas. Two questionnaires were administered to 105 and, respectively, 25 dialect native speakers, and the results were analysed quantitatively using Rbrul (Johnson 2019). In accordance with the objectives of the Sicilian Linguistic Atlas, we measured the relevance of the variables age, education and provenance to the variation in the grammar of the verbs under scrutiny. We also applied the same statistical methods to the study of the correlation of verb classes with a number of morphosyntactic patterns. In light of our findings, we propose a lexico-s…

Gerunds become prepositional infinitives in Romance Small Clauses: the effects of later Merge to the syntactic spine

2019

This article offers a comparative analysis of ‘predicative’ gerunds (‘PGs’) and prepositional infinitives (‘PIs’), focussing on perception constructions in Spanish (PGs) and European Portuguese (PIs). I demonstrate that these two constructions are diachronically related and that they still have a similar syntax. The evidence discussed suggests that both constructions are Small Clauses headed by a preposition of central coincidence. In PGs, this preposition is merged in a low aspectual projection and incorporates into the verb. In PIs, an evolution of PGs, it is merged later in the structure. This leads to a layering process, i.e. the splitting of a single head into a series of heads and tra…

Sul suppletivismo verbale in Omero: l’apporto della prospettiva tipologica talmiana

2020

This paper aims at investigating the partially uncertain relationship on which the suppletion of the Homeric verbal forms within the paradigm for ‘go’ is based. For this purpose, the Homeric distribution of some motion verbs for ‘go’, as well as their contexts of use, are taken into account. In the light of Talmy’s theoretical framework of the lexicalization patterns, the analysis focuses on the motion events expressed by ἔρχομαι and ἦλϑον (fut. ἐλεύσομαι, pf. εἰλήλουϑα) and their cooccurring spatial elements, i.e. particles, adverbs, nominal case markers, which encode the path followed by the moving object. Building on telicity as a verb-inherent actional feature (i.e. Lexical Aspect), and…
