Compatible rehabilitation of the Sicilian rural architecture: the case study of "Calcibaida" in Caltavuturo

2020

The Sicilian common typological form of rural estate is the masseria, typical of the latifundium. More particularly, it is a large fortified farm built to control and manage a vast land-property, the old fiefdoms. This paper will analyse the masseria Calcibaida as an eminent example of the mentioned Sicilian rural world. Calcibaida is located in the territory of Caltavuturo, in the centre of Sicily, within the mountain landscape of the Madonie mountains. The complex consists of a compact aggregate of buildings with an internal courtyard and a close large warehouse, further embellished by a fine drinking trough. The typological characteristics, materials and construction technologies of the …

A Sustainable and Zero Energy Healthcare Facility in Mozambique

2016

Sustainable urban development, especially in economically disadvantaged regions, has increasingly become a major strategic priority. New settlements and urban regeneration programs have to improve the quality of social life, promote economic growth, increase environmental protection practices, and ensure the appropriate use of local resources. In that framework, a well-structured healthcare service is commonly conceived as vital for urban development. In response, this paper proposes the construction of one such healthcare facility in a deprived urban area in Maputo, Mozambique. Prioritising typical pillars of sustainability, the project’s design considers traditional building typology and …

A still to be explored heritage: stone and earthen architecture in Sicily / Un patrimonio ancora da esplorare: architettura in pietra e terra in Sici…

2011

Fino a pochi anni fa, si conoscevano soltanto i mattoni crudi in contesti archeologici, databili fino all'età ellenistica. Earth architectures in Sicily can be linked to a technological continuity common to the whole Mediterranean basin. Until few years ago, we knew only examples of adobe buildin…

The Urban-Rural Continuum. The Bioclimatic Approach to Design, Between Past and Future

2021

In Search of a Quality Culture: The Awkward Truths of an Indeterminate Maxim

2014

Abstract The paper explores the evolutions and realities of institutional “Quality Culture” (QC) and unpicks blurred definitions of QC that are to determine whether it has a valid voice in the modern quality assurance vernacular. The authors question whether QC is a practical and achievable goal, or if it is little less than a theoretical conceptual buzz-term that ignores the realities of existing impregnable structures or individual malaise barring real progress towards a process of quality enhancement. It queries whether a QC is equally achievable in the private sector and public sectors. Taking a tertiary educational institution and a cultural institution (opera company) as examples, the…

Audience involvement in creative media for development: Making sense of the semiotic interface

2017

This article explores the role that semiotic communication plays in the generation of narrative affect. It also draws on Suruchi Sood’s concept of audience involvement as being capable of increasing self-efficacy and collective-efficacy, both of which are crucial to behaviour change. It therefore, demonstrates how semiotic tropes are used in creative media narratives to elicit affect and in turn generate authentic audience involvement with the subjects of those narratives, a process which eventually has positive consequences for behaviour change communication. Hence, these narratives fueled by semiotics, become the threshing floor where potential audiences are drawn into pro-social discours…

2021

According to a letter written in 1390, Guillem Nicolau attached a full commentary to his Catalan translation of Ovid’s Heroides. Although these glosses have not survived in any of the extant manuscripts of this translation, they have been preserved in a fifteenth-century manuscript containing an anonymous Castilian version of the Catalan text. In this article, the linguistic- and literary-based identification of these Castilian glosses with those written by Nicolau leads to a further examination of the relationship of the Catalan Heroides to the Latin commentary tradition. Evidence is given of Nicolau having used a Latin manuscript containing accessus and glosses from William of Orléans Bur…
