Australia: An Inescapable Cultural Paradigm? Cross- and Transcultural Elements in Tim Winton’s Fiction

2016

The article considers Tim Winton’s fiction in terms of its cross- and transcultural character. Despite the fact that local Australian settings permeate the writer’s narratives, Winton creates an imaginary space that is both local and transnational in terms of its quality of the domestic culture, which Winton extends beyond its original field of practice. Winton achieves the transcultural quality of his fiction through transgressions and boundary breaking that are possible due to his frequent reworking of the traditional Australian themes and concepts of the unknown, supernatural, mystical, numinous and sacred, exploitation of leitmotifs of journey, transit and in-betweenness, use of cross-c…

Multimodal Perspective into Teachers’ Definitional Practices: Comparing Subject-Specific Language in Physics and History Lessons

2021

This chapter compares two teachers’ definitional practices in two Content-and-Language-Integrated-Learning (CLIL) lessons, i.e. physics and history, which are taught in English in Finland. It adopts Dalton-Puffer’s (Eur J Appl Linguistics 1(2):216–253, 2013; Cognitive discourse functions: specifying an integrative interdisciplinary construct. In: Nikula T, Dafouz E, Moore P, Smit U (eds) Conceptualising integration in CLIL and multilingual education. Bristol: Multilingual Matters, pp. 29–54, 2016) theoretical construct of cognitive discourse functions (CDF) and showcases how it can be operationalized with empirical grounding. Erosion of universal health coverage in Spain

2013

Whereas the recent UN resolution urges governments to accelerate progress towards universal access to affordable and quality health-care services, the Spanish Government, bypassing the parliamentary procedure, enacted a Royal Decree to limit access to free services at the point of delivery for all-undermining the principle of universal coverage. Spanish health and social service budgets have been subjected to large cuts (13,7% in 2012 and 16,2% in 2013) with some regions imposing additional budget cuts.

Algebraic (2, 2)-transformation groups

2009

This paper contains the more significant part of the article with the same title that will appear in the Volume 12 of Journal of Group Theory (2009). In this paper we determine all algebraic transformation groups $G$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\sf k$, which operate transitively, but not primitively, on a variety $\Omega$, provided the following conditions are fulfilled. We ask that the (non-effective) action of $G$ on the variety of blocks is sharply 2-transitive, as well as the action on a block $\Delta$ of the normalizer $G_\Delta$. Also we require sharp transitivity on pairs $(X,Y)$ of independent points of $\Omega$, i.e. points contained in different blocks.

Wole Soyinka: Due Poesie

2008

A new rotational integral formula for intrinsic volumes in space forms

2010

A new rotational version of Crofton's formula is derived for the intrinsic volumes of a domain Y in a space form. More precisely, a functional is defined on the intersection between Y and a totally geodesic submanifold (plane) through a fixed point, such that the rotational average of this functional is equal to the intrinsic volumes of Y. Particular cases of interest in stereology are considered for the Euclidean case. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

XXV años de Trabajo social. El aniversario como rito de pasaje

2009

Commemorating a date, thus turning it into an emblematic day, can be considered a «rite of passage» which turns a private event into a public ceremony with a heightened symbolic value. Rites in Social Work are necessary to allow the growth of this profession, a young one barely one hundred years old, and to allow adaptation to new realities. This is how the ritual restores the time of the myth, allowing the old to remain in order to integrate the new, establishing a narration of evolution and growth. Rituals are acts that symbolize, over a sequence of time, the founding myth. They refer to the origins of identity of a profession, in this case, Social Work. Myths have a clear, noble and foun…
