Comparative Studies on Vascular Endothelium in vitro
1994
Recent studies have presented evidence that the processes of hypoxaemia and reperfusion are involved in several pathogenetic mechanisms of atherosclerotic lesions. The ability of hypoxaemia to activate circulating white blood cells (WBCs) and enhance WBC-endothelial cell (EC) interactions is suspected to be a major factor in deleterious processes in the blood vessel wall. Various groups have suggested that cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-selectin and their leukocyte ligands are involved in intercellular activities of the relevant cell types. We studied the effects of different oxygen tensions, simulating normoxic conditions, hypoxia and hyperoxia in vitro with t…
The Vascularization of Experimental and Human Primary Tumors: Comparative Morphometric and Morphologic Studies
1998
The importance of the blood vessel system in solid tumors has given rise to an increasing interest in this system as a direct target for tumor therapy, i.e. vascular targeting (Denekamp, 1984). Furthermore, its importance as a route for delivery of anticancer drugs (chemo- and immunotherapies) or photosensitizers (photodynamic laser therapy), as well as its modulatory influences on radiotherapy and hyperthermia — the former greatly depending on the amount of oxygen available, the latter on heat transfer — are evident. Numerous studies on the energy metabolism of solid tumors (Vaupel et al., 1987, 1989) have pointed out the functional importance of the blood vessel system and stress the need…
Biofiltration System for Purification of Composting Waste Gases
2006
The biofiltration technique for the purification of polluted air from composting facility volatile compounds was studied. Two different biowaste composting techniques were compared with regard to emission of NH3 and H2S. The ammonia removal was observed in aerobic phase of active composting period, respectively H2S in anaerobic phase. Biofiltration process was realized in modified solid- state fermentation system (SSF). The biodegradation of volatile compounds was investigated in one and two stage systems with inert packing material and hemoautotrofic microorganisms designed DN-1 (Pseudomonas sp.), DN-2 (Nitrisomonas sp.), DN-3 (Nitrobacter sp.) and DN-13 (Sarcina sp.) and Thiopharus-3. The…
The Role of Immunosenescence in Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: A Review.
2022
Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is one of the most important causes of vascular dementia. Immunosenescence and inflammatory response, with the involvement of the cerebrovascular system, constitute the basis of this disease. Immunosenescence identifies a condition of deterioration of the immune organs and consequent dysregulation of the immune response caused by cellular senescence, which exposes older adults to a greater vulnerability. A low-grade chronic inflammation status also accompanies it without overt infections, an “inflammaging” condition. The correlation between immunosenescence and inflammaging is fundamental in understanding the pathogenesis of age-related CSVD (ArCSVD). Th…
Experimental Study of Vibrations in Face Milling Cutting
2014
The paper consists of a research in designing and experimental analysis using a face milling cutter with round inserts. A general model for the new cutter is proposed taking into consideration multiple aspects regarding monitoring and controling the milling process. A comparison of measured vibrations when cutting with different parameters for two constructions of the milling head is presented. The objective of this vibration comparison is to verify wether the new design behaves in similar way with the classic and proven concept of insert clamping using a central screw.
Head Tracking Three-Dimensional Integral Imaging Display Using Smart Pseudoscopic-to-Orthoscopic Conversion
2016
A novel head tracking three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging display is presented. By means of proper application of the smart pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion (SPOC) method, our display allows an extended viewing angle accommodated to the viewer's position which is obtained by a head/eye tracking system. Using the SPOC, new sets of elemental images are calculated and adapted to any specific viewing position. Additionally, the crosstalk which is typical in conventional integral imaging, is eliminated for a large viewing angle. By performing the rotation transformation in the simulated display, viewing a 3D scene with head rotation can be realized for robust display. Experimental resu…
Perlecan Maintains microvessel integrity in vivo and modulates their formation in vitro
2012
Perlecan is a heparan sulfate proteoglycan assembled into the vascular basement membranes (BMs) during vasculogenesis. In the present study we have investigated vessel formation in mice, teratomas and embryoid bodies (EBs) in the absence of perlecan. We found that perlecan was dispensable for blood vessel formation and maturation until embryonic day (E) 12.5. At later stages of development 40% of mutant embryos showed dilated microvessels in brain and skin, which ruptured and led to severe bleedings. Surprisingly, teratomas derived from perlecan-null ES cells showed efficient contribution of perlecan-deficient endothelial cells to an apparently normal tumor vasculature. However, in perlecan…
Combined inguinal hernia in the elderly. Portraying the progression of hernia disease
2016
Abstract Introduction Identification of a combined hernia is a common occurrence in the course of inguinal hernia repair. This type of protrusion disease seems to affect the elderly, in particular. Very few investigations have been carried out to ascertain the structural changes that occur in the groin affected by this clinical condition. Method Analysis of intraoperative findings of combined inguinal hernias evidenced in the elderly, from the most recent 100 groin hernia repair procedures carried out by a single operator, represents the basis of the article. Protrusions that presumably represent the forerunner of this type of hernia were also analyzed: double ipsilateral inguinal hernias c…
Prostaglandin A2 (PGA2) increases the coronary vascular resistance in the guinea-pig isolated heart preparation.
1977
Prostaglandin A2 (PGA2) in concentrations of 1.5·10−8 to 3·10−6 M was found to produce concentration-dependent increase in the coronary vascular resistance of the guinea-pig isolated heart without alterations in myocardial contractile force and oxygen consumption.
