Optical coherence tomography angiography evaluation of peripapillary microvascular changes after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair

2021

PURPOSE To evaluate the radial peripapillary capillary plexus (RPCP) vessel density (VD) and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes successfully treated with pars plana vitrectomy for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. METHODS In this cross-sectional multicenter clinical study, eyes with a minimum 12-month follow-up were reexamined. The RPCP VD and RNFL thickness in the rhegmatogenous retinal detachment subfields of the affected eye (study group) were compared with the corresponding areas of the healthy fellow eyes (control group). RESULTS Fifty-three eyes were included in the study. A significantly lower RPCP VD and RNFL thickness were observed in those subfields af…

Different methods for anatomical targeting.

2003

AIM: Several procedures are used in the different neurosurgical centers in order to perform stereotactic surgery for movement disorders. At the moment no procedure can really be considered superior to the other. We contribute with our experience of targeting method. METHODS: Ten patients were selected, in accordance to the guidelines for the treatment of Parkinson disease, and operated by several methods including pallidotomy, bilateral insertion of chronic deep brain electrodes within the internal pallidum and in the subthalamic nucleus (18 procedures). Interventions: in each patient an MR scan was performed the day before surgery. Scans were performed axially parallel to the intercommissu…

Impact of platelet rich plasma and adipose stem cells on lymphangiogenesis in a murine tail lymphedema model.

2015

Abstract Background Lymphedema is an underdiagnosed pathology which in industrialized countries mainly affects cancer patients that underwent lymph node dissection and/or radiation. Currently no effective therapy is available so that patients' life quality is compromised by swellings of the concerned body region. This unfortunate condition is associated with body imbalance and subsequent osteochondral deformations and impaired function as well as with an increased risk of potentially life threatening soft tissue infections. Methods The effects of PRP and ASC on angiogenesis (anti-CD31 staining), microcirculation (Laser Doppler Imaging), lymphangiogenesis (anti-LYVE1 staining), microvascular…

Long-term follow-up after drug eluting stent implantation in left main trifurcations

2009

Aims: Trifurcation lesions, which are mostly observed in distal left main (LM), represent a technical challenge for interventional cardiologists. We sought to determine the feasibility and long-term clinical outcome of drug eluting stent (DES) implantation in patients with LM coronary trifurcation lesions. Methods and results: All patients with clinically significant de novo LM trifurcation lesions, who refused coronary artery bypass surgery and were considered eligible for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), were consecutively enrolled in this study from November 2005 to February 2007. Eleven patients (65±9 years, 91% men) met all the inclusion criteria and underwent LM trifurcation …

Migration of Neuronal Precursors From the Telencephalic Ventricular Zone Into the Olfactory Bulb in Adult Zebrafish

2011

In the brain of adult mammals, neuronal precursors are generated in the subventricular zone in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricles and migrate into the olfactory bulbs (OBs) through a well-studied route called the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Recent studies have revealed that a comparable neural stem cell niche is widely conserved at the ventricular wall of adult vertebrates. However, little is known about the migration route of neuronal precursors in nonmammalian adult brains. Here, we show that, in the adult zebrafish, a cluster of neuronal precursors generated in the telencephalic ventricular zone migrates into the OB via a route equivalent to the mammalian RMS. Unlike the mamm…

Fatal attack on a pedestrian by an escaped circus elephant

2019

Abstract We report the case of a 65-year-old man who was attacked and killed by a female elephant that had previously escaped from a nearby circus. According to a witness the man was lifted up by the tusks, flung into the air and stomped upon. At autopsy the body showed signs of severe blunt force trauma and impalement, including multiple lacerations of the skin, a crushed thorax, a spinal fracture and a fractured humerus. The spinal cord and the major abdominal vessels were severed. There have been very few elephant attacks in Europe; this is the first reported case in Germany.

Effects of clopidogrel vs. prasugrel vs. ticagrelor on endothelial function, inflammatory parameters, and platelet function in patients with acute co…

2020

Abstract Aims In a randomized, parallel, blinded study, we investigate the impact of clopidogrel, prasugrel, or ticagrelor on peripheral endothelial function in patients undergoing stenting for an acute coronary syndrome. Methods and results The primary endpoint of the study was the change in endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilation (FMD) following stenting. A total of 90 patients (age 62 ± 9 years, 81 males, 22 diabetics, 49 non-ST elevation myocardial infarctions) were enrolled. There were no significant differences among groups in any clinical parameter. Acutely before stenting, all three drugs improved FMD without differences between groups (P = 0.73). Stenting blunted FMD in the cl…

A multicenter 12-month experience with a new iliac side-branched device for revascularization of hypogastric arteries.

2016

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the 1-year safety and efficacy of a new iliac side-branched device (IBD) for revascularization of the hypogastric arteries. Methods Patients receiving the E-liac (Jotec GmbH, Hechingen, Germany) side-branched device at six German vascular centers either as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with abdominal aortic aneurysm exclusion were included in a prospectively created data bank. Collected data were analyzed for baseline characteristics, procedural events, and clinical follow-up; variables included endoleaks, reinterventions, and internal iliac artery (IIA) patency. Results Between January 2012 and January 2015, a total of…

A 15-Year Single-Center Experience of Endovascular Repair for Elective and Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

2016

Purpose: To evaluate the differences in technical outcomes and secondary interventions between elective endovascular aneurysm repair (el-EVAR) procedures and those for ruptured aneurysms (r-EVAR). Methods: Of the 906 patients treated with primary EVAR from September 1998 until July 2012, 43 cases were excluded owing to the use of first-generation stent-grafts. Among the remaining 863 patients, 773 (89.6%) patients (mean age 72 years; 697 men) with asymptomatic or symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) were assigned to the el-EVAR group; 90 (10.4%) patients (mean age 73 years; 73 men) were assigned to the r-EVAR group based on blood outside the aortic wall on preoperative imaging. Th…
