Shoot Development and Non-Destructive Determination of Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Leaf Area

A non-destructive method for determination of grapevine total leaf area is described. It is based on a highly significant correlation found between shoot leaf area and shoot length of Syrah (Vitis vinifera L.). Total leaf area per vine may be determined by using the equations described, by choosing a representative number of primary and secondary shoots and by knowing the total number of shoots of the plant considered. The equation seemed independent of vigour and terroir and reasonably sensitive to changes in leaf area that occurred independent of altered shoot length. Abstract The super high density (SHD) model is a new olive growing system characterized by earlier and higher yields, fully mechanized harvesting and reduced orchard management costs. Until recently all commercial SHD orchards were planted primarily with three varieties: ‘Arbequina’, ‘Arbosana’ and ‘Koroneiki’. To increase variety diversity, broaden available olive oil chemical and organoleptic profiles, and olive oils for marketing, minor local varieties should be evaluated for adaptability to the SHD system. Berry Size and Qualitative Characteristics of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Syrah

The effect of variation in berry size on berry composition was studied in irrigated Syrah/R99 grapevines, located in a temperate area of South Africa. Berries from 45 clusters, sampled from both sides of the canopy (east and west), were weighed to create four categories: 1. less or equal to 1.5 g; 2. between 1.51 g and 2.00 g; 3. between 2.01 g and 2.50 g; 4. more than 2.50 g. Berry physical characteristics were determined and total anthocyanins and seed flavonoids were analysed by spectrophotometry and anthocyanin profiles by HPLC. Behaviour of alkyl oleates following foliar application in relation to their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl

Summary The foliar penetration of four alkyl oleates (methyl to butyl) and their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl was studied in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), cleavers (Galium aparine L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). Loss of alkyl oleates from glass and plant surfaces was inversely related to the length of the alkyl chains and was assumed to be due to volatilization. All four alkyl oleates after application alone, readily penetrated into pea and barley leaves but much less into G. aparine. A method is described that allows the development of an empirical approach to quantify synergistic interactions and their variations with shear rate. The approach is based on the definition of a viscous synergism index, Iv. The method is applied to xanthan-locust bean gum gels, and an equation is developed for relating the synergism index to shear rate, γ, and the locust bean gum/xanthan gum concentration ratio, z. The value of at which that function has a maximum, IMV, is calculated. This value of z provided an estimation of the proportion of gums at which maximum synergism occurs. The quality of the proteins can be modified as a consequence of a set of reactions, the most important of which are the interactions between protein and carbohydrates, also known as Maillard reactions. These reactions can also occur when the storage conditions of moisture and temperature are unfavorable.
