Opuntia cladodes as functional ingredient in durum wheat bread: rheological, sensory, and chemical characterization

Cladodes are considered by-products of Opuntia ficus-indica cultivation. Their addition as source of antioxidants to durum wheat breads could have effects on preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and inflammation. The inclusion of 0-5-10-15% cladodes, harvested in three different locations, on quality and antioxidant properties of fortified durum wheat breads has been evaluated. The enrichment with 10% of cladodes resulted in an increase in the content of total phenolics (14.8 vs 2.7 mg GAE/100 g of control bread), a decrease of IC50 (3.28 vs 49.7 mg/ml of control bread), good rheological characteristics of loaves and largely positive evaluation by panel test. Essential oil components of orange peels and antimicrobial activity

In this study, the orange peel of 12 cultivars of Citrus sinensis from central-eastern Sicily was employed to obtain essential oils and extracts. The ones were extracted through steam distillation, the others through extraction in hexane. Chemical constituents were evaluated in terms of qualitative and quantitative analyses by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Fifty-four components were identified in the steam essential oils and 44 in the extracts. In all the cultivars, the main component is d-limonene (73.9–97%); discrete percentages of linalool, geraniol and nerol were also found. High Yields of Shrimp Oil Rich in Omega-3 and Natural Astaxanthin from Shrimp Waste

A valued marine oil rich in omega-3 lipids and natural astaxanthin is obtained with remarkably high yield (up to S wt %) extending to pink shrimp waste (head and carapace) using the approach to extract fish oil from fish processing byproducts using D-limonene. Biobased limonene is an excellent solvent for both unsaturated lipids and astaxanthin-based carotenoids preventing oxidative degradation during the extraction cycle including solvent separation at 85 degrees C. Explaining the deep red color of the shrimp oil obtained, computational simulation suggests that D-limonene is also a good solvent for natural astaxanthin abundant in shrimp.

Alteration of the structural properties of inulin gels

Abstract In this work, inulin particle gels, prepared with a type of long chain inulin, were examined in terms of their structural properties and mechanical response, depending on the applied shear rates and temperature during gel preparation. The results are interpreted on the basis of a particle gel model, which takes into account the varying gel structure, depending on the sample preparation parameters. X-ray measurements of the inulin powder, used for the experiments, revealed a mostly amorphous powder. Testing steady-state analysis of single-ring and square pressure infiltrometer data

Testing reliability of the saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Ks, estimated by applying the steady-state single-ring (SR) model to the quasi steady-state infiltration rates obtained with a single-ring pressure infiltrometer (PI) increases confidence in the estimated Ks values. Determining a means to estimate Ks from infiltration data collected with a square infiltrometer allows the use of sources of different shapes.
