Optimization of Cell Growth on Bacterial Cellulose by Adsorption of Collagen and Poly-L-Lysine

Poly-L-lysine and collagen were separately added to bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers. The ionic surface charge had been previously modified in order to promote the adsorption of poly-L-lysine and collagen. Cell adhesion of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells on BC surfaces was confirmed by removing unattached cells from the BC substrates. Cell viability was calculated and it was determined that both poly-L-lysine-BC and collagen-BC substrates are viable for cell growth. The results showed that the cell viability in poly-L-lysine modified BC substrate is similar to the one observed in polystyrene tissue culture plates.

Development and viability of biofilms grown on experimental abutments mimicking dental implants: an in vivo model

Background To determine whether an experimental abutment mimicking the macro- and microstructure of a dental implant is a suitable method for recovering biofilm, and to describe the features of biofilms formed around such abutments on healthy implants. Protective effect of bioaccessible fractions of citrus fruit pulps against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells

Fruit pulps from Navel (N) and Cara Cara (CC) oranges, and Clementine mandarin freshly harvested (M) and refrigerated stored (M12) were used to evaluate the cytoprotective effect of their bioaccessible fractions (BF) against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells. BF of samples preserved viability vs. H2O2 treated cells, reaching values similar to controls. Lipid peroxidation was reduced to levels of control cells, but M did not reach control values. Influence of cell-cell contact between L. thermotolerans and S. cerevisiae on yeast interactions and the exo-metabolome

International audience; Sequential fermentation of grape must inoculated with L. thermotolerans and then S. cerevisiae 24 h later (typical wine-making practice) was conducted with or without cell-cell contact between the two yeast species. We monitored cell viability of the two species throughout fermentation by flow cytometry. New linezolid-like 1,2,4-oxadiazoles active against Gram-positive multiresistant pathogens

The synthesis and the in vitro antibacterial activity of novel linezolid-like oxadiazoles are reported. Replacement of the linezolid morpholine C-ring with 1,2,4-oxadiazole results in an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant comparable or even superior to that of linezolid. While acetamidomethyl or thioacetoamidomethyl moieties in the C(5) side-chain are required, fluorination of the phenyl B ring exhibits a slight effect on an antibacterial activity but its presence seems to reduce the compounds cytotoxicity. Comparison of the Fungistatic Activity of Selected Essential Oils Relative to

The aim of the study was to determine the chemical composition of lemon, rosewood, geranium and rosemary oils, and compare their effect on the sensitivity of Fusarium graminearum ZALF 24 and Fusarium graminearum ZALF 339 isolated from infected cereals. The tested oils were added to Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium at concentrations of 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%. Recent developments in the use of viability dyes and quantitative PCR in the food microbiology field.

The increase in foodborne outbreaks highlights the need for rapid, sensitive and specific methods for food safety monitoring, enabling specific detection and quantification of viable foodborne pathogens. Real-time PCR (qPCR) combined with the use of viability dyes, recently introduced, fulfils all these requirements. The strategy relies on the use of DNA-binding molecules such as propidium monoazide (PMA) or ethidium monoazide (EMA) as sample pretreatment previous to the qPCR. A new model for germination of fungi.

Abstract The objective of this study was to design a germination model dedicated to fungi. The percentage of germinated spores, P(%), depended on the maximum percentage of germination P max (%), the germination time, τ (h) and a design parameter, d (-) according to : P = P max 1 − 1 1 + t τ d . The model was capable to fit satisfactorily either apparent symmetric and asymmetric shapes of germination curves. Approaches to study yeast cell aging and death

For millennia, yeast has been exploited to obtain fermentation products, such as foods and beverages. For c. 50 years, yeast has been an established model organism for basic and applied research, and more specifically, for c. 15 years, this unicellular organism has been applied to dissect molecular mechanisms of cell aging and programmed cell death. In this review, we present an overview of approaches to study cell aging and death in yeast, including lifespan assessments, calorie restriction, cell viability, survival, and death markers.
