The evolution of multicellular organisms was marked by adaptations to protect against pathogens. The mechanisms for discriminating the ’’self’’ from ’’non-self” have evolved into a long history of cellular and molecular strategies, from damage repair to the co-evolution of host-pathogen interactions. Draft genome sequences of Vibrio vulnificus strains recovered from moribund tilapia

Potentially zoonotic Vibrio vulnificus strains were isolated from vibriosis outbreaks occurring on eastern Mediterranean tilapia farms between 2016 and 2019. In this work, the draft genome sequences of three representative isolates are presented.

SummarySeveral strains of Vibrio cholerae secrete ahaemolytic toxin of 63kDa, termed V. cholerae cytolysin (VCC). This toxin causes extensive vacuo-lation and death of cells in culture and forms ananion-selective channel in planar lipid bilayers and incells. Here, we identify inhibitors of the VCC anionchannel and show that the formation of the anionchannel is necessary for the development of the vacuoles and for the cell death induced by this toxin. Identification of Vibrio spp. (other than V. vulnificus) recovered on CPC agar from marine natural samples

Two hundred and eighty four presumptive but not confirmed Vibrio vulnificus isolates grown on cellobiose-polymixin B-colistin agar (CPC) at 40°C, recovered from sea water samples from Valencia, Spain, during a microbiological survey for V. vulnificus, were phenotypically identified. Most of the isolates (91%) corresponded to Vibrio species. V. harveyi (24%) and V. splendidus(19%) were the most abundant species identified, followed by V. navarrensis (13%), V. alginolyticus (8%) and V. parahaemolyticus (5%). New insights regarding Acinetobacter genomic island-related elements

The objective of this study was to mobilize the Acinetobacter genomic island 1-A (AGI1-A) from Enterobacter hormaechei EclCSP2185 (E. cloacae complex) and to search for the distribution and structure of AGI1-related elements in the NCBI database. Comparison of outer membrane protein profiles of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes 1 and 2.

The outer membrane proteins of 17 Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 strains from Japanese and European eels, and 12 biotype 1 strains from clinical and environmental sources have been compared. The overall profile in both biotypes was similar, and a major protein band of molecular mass 36 kDa was detected in the majority of the strains. Differences in the minor bands allowed differentiation of strains from different origins, suggesting that outer membrane protein profiles could be useful as epidemiological markers in the species V. vulnificus. Pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila Serogroup O:14 and O:81 Strains with an S Layer

ABSTRACT Five autoagglutinating Aeromonas hydrophila isolates recovered from eels and humans were assigned to serogroups O:14 and O:81 of the Sakazaki and Shimada (National Institutes of Health) scheme.
