The Mu3e Data Acquisition

The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay $\mu^+\to e^+e^-e^+$ with a sensitivity of one in 10$^{16}$ muon decays. The first phase of the experiment is currently under construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland), where beams with up to 10$^8$ muons per second are available. The detector will consist of an ultra-thin pixel tracker made from High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS), complemented by scintillating tiles and fibres for precise timing measurements. The experiment produces about 100 Gbit/s of zero-suppressed data which are transported to a filter farm using a network of FPGAs and fast optical links. On the filte…

Overview of the high-level trigger electron and photon selection for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC

The High-Level Trigger (HLT$=$second level trigger and Event Filter), which is a software based trigger will need to reduce the level-1 output rate of$approx75$kHz to$approx200$Hz written out to mass storage. COMPASS—A COMPAct decay spectroscopy set-up

Abstract A compact silicon detector array with high spatial granularity and fast, fully digital data recording has been developed and commissioned for the investigation of heavy and superheavy nuclear species. The detector array can be combined in close geometry with large volume germanium detectors. It offers comprehensive particle and photon coincidence and correlation spectroscopy by highly efficient evaporation residue, α , γ , conversion electron and X-ray detection supported by the high granularity of the implantation chip. T2-beta-spectroscopy at KATRIN and the challenge of controlling the electrostatic potentials

Abstract The KATRIN-Collaboration at KIT-Karlsruhe is setting up a huge electrostatic spectrometer in order to search for the absolute value of the neutrino mass from the beta-spectrum of molecular tritium with a sensitivity limit of 0.2 eV. Apart from high intensity, high resolution and low background, this goal requires control of the 18.6 kV filter potential on the ppm level. A pre-processing technique based on the wavelet transform for linear autoassociators with applications to face recognition

In order to improve the performance of a linear autoassociator (which is a neural network model), we explore the use of several preprocessing techniques. The gist of our approach is to store, in addition to the original pattern, one or several pre-processed (i.e. filtered) versions of the patterns to be stored in a neural network. GaInNAs/GaAs Bragg-mirror-based structures for novel 1.3μm device applications

We report the use of GaInNAs/GaAs material system for a range of 1.3 μm vertical-cavity devices namely VCSELs, VCSOAs, VECSELs and SESAMs. Using optical pumping, we demonstrate that up to 4 mW of 1290 nm output power can be fibre-coupled from a VCSEL. We also show that tayloring the VCSEL structure allows to produce a monolithic long-wavelength VCSOA with up to 16 dB of gain. We also report the first demonstration of a 1.3 μm VECSEL with more than 0.5 W of CW ouptut power. Finally, annealing effects on the properties of a GaInNAs SBR and modelocking of two Nd:doped solid state lasers using this element are described.

Tunable microwave photonic filter based on chirped fiber gratings working with a single optical carrier at constant wavelength

This paper presents a tunable transversal filter working with a single optical carrier at constant wavelength. The filter consists of a set of chirped gratings whose time delay is tuned with respect to the emission wavelength of a fiber laser by a piezoelectric actuator; extra lengths of fiber are inserted in the filter arms in order to avoid interferences between signals reflected in different gratings. Two and three taps filters are experimentally demonstrated, the filters transfer function is electronically tuned within the free spectral range.

Improvement of two-dimensional structured illumination microscopy with an incoherent illumination pattern of tunable frequency.

In two-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (2D-SIM), high-resolution images with optimal optical sectioning (OS) cannot be obtained simultaneously. This tradeoff can be overcome by using a tunable-frequency 2D-SIM system and a proper reconstruction method. The goal of this work is twofold. First, we present a computational approach to reconstruct optical-sectioned images with super-resolution enhancement (OS-SR) by using a tunable SIM system. Second, we propose an incoherent tunable-frequency 2D-SIM system based on a Fresnel biprism implementation.
