"Frater, ave atque vale" (Catull. 101.10): fortuna literaria de una fórmula epigráfica
2011
[EN] In this article we offer an overview of some of the modern authors (specially Tennyson, Swinburne, V. Woolf, G. Moore, C.K. Stead,…
Data from: Moving in the Anthropocene: global reductions in terrestrial mammalian movements
2019
Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Global loss of vagility alters a key ecological trait of animals that affects no…
2014
Although it has been a key concept of literary criticism in the English-speaking world for more than a half-century, modernism remains a relatively misunderstood notion in France, owing to its proximity to somewhat close concepts such as modernity and avant-garde, which it only partially overlaps. The concept is relevant to experimentation in all literary genres, but this study focuses on the novel, with texts by James Joyce, André Gide, Ramón Gómez de la Serna and Virginia Woolf. Those have often been mischaracterized by literary critics as either mimetic novels — though more realistic than realist novels — or more frequently as emblematic of the self-referential text, as defined by the do…
Spatial structure and nest demography reveal the influence of competition, parasitism and habitat quality on slavemaking ants and their hosts
2010
Abstract Background Natural communities are structured by intra-guild competition, predation or parasitism and the abiotic environment. We studied the relative importance of these factors in two host-social parasite ecosystems in three ant communities in Europe (Bavaria) and North America (New York, West Virginia). We tested how these factors affect colony demography, life-history and the spatial pattern of colonies, using a large sample size of more than 1000 colonies. The strength of competition was measured by the distance to the nearest competitor. Distance to the closest social parasite colony was used as a measure of parasitism risk. Nest sites (i.e., sticks or acorns) are limited in …

A Form for Writing 20th Century Loss: Aesthetics of Absence in Virginia Woolf’s Jacob’s Room
2021
Tannins from Hamamelis virginiana Bark Extract: Characterization and Improvement of the Antiviral Efficacy against Influenza A Virus and Human Papill…
2014
Antiviral activity has been demonstrated for different tannin-rich plant extracts. Since tannins of different classes and molecular weights are often found together in plant extracts and may differ in their antiviral activity, we have compared the effect against influenza A virus (IAV) of Hamamelis virginiana L. bark extract, fractions enriched in tannins of different molecular weights and individual tannins of defined structures, including pseudotannins. We demonstrate antiviral activity of the bark extract against different IAV strains, including the recently emerged H7N9, and show for the first time that a tannin-rich extract inhibits human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 infection. As the …
