In 2009 and 2010, approximately 2% of plants had disease symptoms, including initial leaflet chlorosis that later developed into necrotic spots and general necroses along the leaflet. Fruit production on affected plants was substantially reduced and necroses were also present. Total RNA was extracted from five symptomatic plant samples using the RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) and analyzed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with specific primer pair: TR2F (5′ GAAGGACGAAGAGCGACTG 3′), and TR2R (5′ AAGGTAGGTATGCGTTTGC 3′) (1). Vibrio vulnificus can be divided into two groups on the basis of pathogenesis. Group 1 is pathogenic only to humans, whereas group 2 is pathogenic to eels and occasionally to humans. Although both groups produce a 50-kDa cytotoxin-hemolysin (V. vulnificus hemolysin; VVH), the toxins are different. In the present study, the nucleotide sequence of the toxin gene (vvhA ) of strain CDC B3547 (a group 2 strain) was determined, and the deduced amino acid sequence was compared to that of strain L-180 (a group 1 strain). Gender differences in chronic HBsAg carriers in Italy: Evidence for the independent role of male sex in severity of liver disease

It has been shown that sexual hormones have an opposite effect on hepatic fibrosis progression and hepatocellular carcinoma development. Sex differences among 2,762 chronic HBsAg carriers consecutively referring Italian hospitals in 2001 and in 2007 have been evaluated, particularly focusing on the role of gender on severity of liver disease. The overall sex ratio (males/females) was 2.6. Females were more likely born abroad and new diagnosis cases; but less likely HIV coinfected. No sex difference was observed regarding coinfection with other hepatitis viruses. Incidence and epidemiology of Citrus tristeza virus in the Valencian Community of Spain

Abstract The first outbreak of citrus tristeza disease in Spain caused by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was recorded in 1957 in the Valencian Community (VC). In total c. 40 million trees, mainly of sweet orange and mandarin grafted on sour orange rootstocks, declined due to CTV. Large-scale surveys in different municipalities of the VC indicated that the disease spread very fast. Incidence increased from 11% in 1989 to 53% in 1998. Toxoptera aurantii and Aphis spiraecola (inefficient aphid vectors of CTV) predominated before 1985–87. Substrate determinants for cleavage in cis and in trans by the hepatitis C virus NS3 proteinase

Processing of the hepatitis C virus polyprotein is accomplished by a series of cotranslational and posttranslational cleavages mediated by host cell signalases and two virally encoded proteinases. Of these the NS3 proteinase is essential for processing at the NS3/4A, NS4A/4B, NS4B/5A, and NS5A/5B junctions. Processing between NS3 and NS4A occurs in cis, implying an intramolecular reaction mechanism, whereas cleavage at the other sites can also be mediated in trans. Large clostridial cytotoxins — a family of glycosyltransferases modifying small GTP-binding proteins

Some Clostridium species produce AB x -type protein cytotoxins of high molecular weight. These toxins constitute the group of large clostridial cytotoxins (LCTs), which have homologous protein sequences, exert glycosyltransferase activity and modify GTP-binding proteins of the Ras-superfamily. These characteristics render the LCTs valuable tools for developmental and cell biologists.

Reorganization of Nuclear Domain 10 Induced by Papillomavirus Capsid Protein L2

AbstractNuclear domains (ND) 10 are associated with proteins implicated in transcriptional regulation, growth suppression, and apoptosis. We now show that the minor capsid protein L2 of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 33 induces a reorganization of ND10-associated proteins. Whereas the promyelocytic leukemia protein, the major structural component of ND10, was unaffected by L2, Sp100 was released from ND10 upon L2 expression. The total cellular amount of Sp100, but not of Sp100 mRNA, decreased significantly, suggesting degradation of Sp100.
