On achieving intelligent traffic-aware consolidation of virtual machines in a data center using Learning Automata

2018

Unlike the computational mechanisms of the past many decades, that involved individual (extremely powerful) computers or clusters of machines, cloud computing (CC) is becoming increasingly pertinent and popular. Computing resources such as CPU and storage are becoming cheaper, and the servers themselves are becoming more powerful. This enables clouds to host more virtual machines (VMs). A natural consequence ofthis is that many modern-day data centers experience very high internaltraffic within the data centers themselves. This is, of course, due to the occurrence of servers that belong to the same tenant, communicating between themselves. The problem is accentuated when the VM deployment t…

Virtual Reality and Anxiety Disorders Treatment: Evolution and Future Perspectives

2019

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that allows the simulation of different real-life situations on a tridimensional computer-generated environment where the user can interact with the environment as if he/she were the real world. VR has potential as an exposure technique for treating anxiety disorders because VR and real objects have similar characteristics, which creates the illusion that the user is immersed and engaged with objects in the real world. Regarding the efficacy of using virtual reality exposure-based therapy (VR-EBT), for more than two decades, there has been sufficient empirical evidence regarding VR-EBT for treating anxiety disorders. Finally, this chapter ends with some …

Complete karyotype characterization of the K562 cell line by combined application of G-banding, multiplex-fluorescence in situ hybridization, fluores…

2001

This study combines conventional cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), multiplex-FISH and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). In applying this multimodal approach on the human leukemia cell line K562, the chromosome composition was refined in detail and compared with data from the literature. A hypotriploid karyotype with a modal chromosome number of 67, and 21 unique marker chromosomes were identified. The classification of six markers was identical to published data and the composition of five further markers from the literature could be fully clarified for the first time. The composition of another five markers, which have been interpreted in divergent ways in dif…

A glimpse of gluons through deeply virtual compton scattering on the proton

2017

The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)—a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting the distinct energ…

Ruined Archeological Heritage: Survey, 3D Modeling, Virtual Anastylosis.

2013

The study focuses on the use of 3D surveying and digital representation tools for the purpose of documenting archaeological monuments whose restoration involves the disassembly and repositioning of blocks. The case study in question is a building at the west end of the San Biagio archaic sanctuary, located within the archaeological site of Agrigento. The monument is a rectangular building encompassing two pools, whose foundations are suffering from deep decay and there are large spaces between the walls which have become disconnected. Surveying and 3D modelling have been used to illustrate the existing state of the building. Plans, sections and orthophotos have been created to support the …

Virtual reality school for children with learning difficulties

2005

This paper describes the process starting from the identification of educational needs of children with learning difficulties to the design of a fully interactive virtual school, where it is possible to learn about the physical and social world. The fundamentals of this design are the exclusive advantages that Real Time Graphics offer for developing tools in which children can learn while playing. This development has been done in the framework of a strongly-funded project by the Spanish Government. This ongoing project is in its final stage of development and will produce tools which are valid both for special and mainstream education, ready to be used and tested over final users.

A link between the residual-based gradient plasticity theory and the analogous theories based on the virtual work principle

2009

A link is shown to exist between the so-called residual-based strain gradient plasticity theory and the analogous theories based on the (extended) virtual work principle (VWP). To this aim, the former theory is reformulated and cast in a residual-free form, whereby the insulation condition and the (nonlocal) Clausius–Duhem inequality, on which the theory is grounded, are substituted with equivalent residual-free ingredients, namely the energy balance condition and the residual-free form of the Clausius–Duhem inequality. The equivalence of the residual-free formulation to the original one is shown, also in their ability to cope with energetic size effects and interfacial energy ones. It emer…

Fusion of visual tools in virtual spaces

1996

Virtual space environment may be improved by combining it with graphical and visual tools. This paper analyses an integrated system able to merge fusion techniques, icons tools and a virtual space environment. A virtual space is characterised by a set of dynamic visual icons and by a heterogeneous virtual reality environment. Their integration is supported by virtual icon grammar (VIG) working on dynamic icons and virtual world. VIG allows to test the actions made by dynamic icons on the activated Virtual World metaphors at a time “t”, and a range of different transactions that place between user and VW(visual query, view and browse of under-world,...), moreover, user can define, modify and…

Achieving Intelligent Traffic-aware Consolidation of Virtual Machines in a Data Center Using Learning Automata

2016

Cloud Computing (CC) is becoming increasingly pertinent and popular. A natural consequence of this is that many modern-day data centers experience very high internal traffic within the data centers themselves. The VMs with high mutual traffic often end up being far apart in the data center network, forcing them to communicate over unnecessarily long distances. The consequent traffic bottlenecks negatively affect both the performance of the application and the network in its entirety, posing nontrivial challenges for the administrators of these cloudbased data centers. The problem can, quite naturally, be compartmentalized into two phases which follow each other. First of all, the VMs are co…
