Learning Platforms: How to Make the Right Choice

2018

Learning through online platform opportunities is one way of organizing a technology-enhanced learning process. This chapter provides an overview of the place and role of learning platforms in the pedagogical process, defines the differences between learning platforms and learning management systems and offers a toolkit for evaluating learning platforms. The toolkit includes 22 criteria divided into 43 sub-criteria, which can be evaluated at 3 levels. This tool can help teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders to make a pedagogically based choice when it comes to choosing which learning platform solutions to use to scaffold student learning in a transformed learning process th…

Adaptive SDN-based architecture using QoE metrics in live video streaming on Cloud Mobile Media

2017

The increasing adoption of smart phones, the increased access to mobile broadband networks and the availability of public cloud infrastructures are aligning to the next generation of truly ubiquitous multimedia services, known as Cloud Mobile Media (CMM) services. Nevertheless, due to an inherit higher and variable end to end delay mainly as a result of the virtualization process, new challenges appear in particular for live video streaming applications in order to keep a good Quality of Experience of the delivered video. Thus, to keep client's satisfaction at good levels in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS), we propose an adaptive Software Defined Networking (SDN)-based architecture runnin…

Motion Cueing Algorithms: A Review

2017

Robotic motion platforms are commonly used in motion-based vehicle simulation. However, the reproduction of realistic accelerations within a reduced workspace is a major challenge. Thus, high-level control strategies commonly referred to as motion cueing algorithms (MCA) are required to convert the simulated vehicle physical state into actual motion for the motion platform. This paper reviews the most important strategies for the generation of motion cues in simulators, listing the advantages and drawbacks of the different solutions. The motion cueing problem, a general scheme and the four most common approaches – classical washout, adaptive washout, optimal control and model predictive con…

Extension and Tuning of Virtual Synchronous Machine to Avoid Oscillatory Instability in Isolated Power Networks

2020

The risk of oscillatory instability introduced by virtual synchronous machines (VSM) control in isolated power networks is investigated. The considered control is a common scheme widely studied in literature, in several configurations and for different case studies. The impact of the VSM control on the system stability is examined for the existing power network of a Mediterranean island. The VSM control is implemented within the power converters interfacing the energy storage systems (ESS) installed in the network. Simulations and analysis show the occurrence of oscillatory instability in the system, with the ESS-VSM and the synchronous machines of the network progressively swinging against…

Representation of thermal building simulation in virtual reality for sustainable building

2014

The importance of energy efficiency as well as integration of advances in sustainable buildingdesign and VR technology have lead this research to focus on thermal simulation results visualized in avirtual environment (VE). The emphasis is on the representation of thermal building simulation (TBS)results and on the perception of thermal data simulated in a VE. The current application of the designprocess through energy efficiency in VR systems is limited mostly to building performance predictionsand design review, as the issue of the data formats and the workflow used for 3D modeling, thermalcalculation and VR visualization.Different applications and tools involved to represent TBS in VE are…

Integration of thermal building simulation and VR techniques for sustainable building projects

2013

Déjà présent sur HAL mais sans le fichier pdf; The importance of energy efficiency and integration of advances in building design and VR technology have led this research to focus on thermal simulation results visualized in a virtual environment to optimize building design. This paper combines the principle of integration for thermal calculation and scientific visualization in VR. The method is to use CAD models (extensively used in architectural design) to analyze a building's thermal performance and visualize it, as well as simulating it through VR technology. Interaction between users and objects in a virtual world are certainly through techniques of visualization metaphors. The object o…

Educational Tools for Second Life: a handbook for educators in virtual worlds.

2010

As a result of two collective activities organised during the MUVEnation programme, we have produced a collection of educational tools for Second Life. This collection has been produced in two stages. First, back in September 2008, 33 partcipants in the introductory module worked together in groups for the identification of more than 100 tools used for teaching and learning in Second Life. Later, in March 2009, 55 education professionals (lecturers, researchers, learning technologists and teachers) have collected, tested and fully described more than 150 tools. The result of this collective work has been transformed into a book, published as an Open Educational Resource under CC licence by …

Development of a Hybrid Method to Generate Gravito-Inertial Cues for Motion Platforms in Highly Immersive Environments

2021

Motion platforms have been widely used in Virtual Reality (VR) systems for decades to simulate motion in virtual environments, and they have several applications in emerging fields such as driving assistance systems, vehicle automation and road risk management. Currently, the development of new VR immersive systems faces unique challenges to respond to the user’s requirements, such as introducing high-resolution 360° panoramic images and videos. With this type of visual information, it is much more complicated to apply the traditional methods of generating motion cues, since it is generally not possible to calculate the necessary corresponding motion properties that are needed to …

A Geographical Self-Organizing Approach for Vehicular Networks

2012

Cooperative vehicular networks have always been considered as the perfect way to bring more comfort to the passengers and more safety to the human life. Thus, research community and governmental organizations are interested to study and deploy these networks. The vehicular networks principle is connecting vehicles to each other and to existing infrastructure. However, their industrialization faces some challenges: (i) high mobility, (ii) frequently partitioned network, (iii) geographically constrained topology, and (iv) scalability. Therefore, in contrast to traditional networks, vehicular network protocols focus on both achieving adequate QoS level and reducing overhead. Achieving these tw…
