Nutritional assessment of the school menus offered in Spain's Mediterranean area.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to perform a nutritional assessment of the menus served in school canteens and to verify their effects on the nutrition of schoolchildren. Methods We selected three collective catering companies that offered ~53 500 menus/d in 369 schools in Spain's Mediterranean area (Valencian Community). The study included four public schools with different management models as well as different supply patterns. Considering the weight of the servings, the caloric contribution of the menus was estimated. Reference interval of monocyte distribution width (MDW) in healthy blood donors.

Abstract Background The aim of the study was to accurately establish the reference interval (RI) of monocyte distribution width (MDW) in healthy blood donors by the direct method using different statistical approaches. Methods MDW was measured in 486 subjects. RI of MDW was calculated by the non-parametric method, the robust method and, the Harrell-Davis bootstrap method and using different tests to identify potential outliers (Dixon-Reed and Tukey). Standard of care for cancer is commonly a combination of surgery with radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Lepidopteran species have a variety of defence strategies against bacterial infections

The insect immune system has versatile ways of coping with microbial insults. Currently, innate immune priming has been described in several invertebrates, and the first insights into its mechanistic basis have been described. Here we studied infections with two different strains of Serratia marcescens bacteria in two different Lepidopteran hosts. Effect of resource availability on evolution of virulence and competition in an environmentally transmitted pathogen

Understanding ecological and epidemiological factors driving pathogen evolution in contemporary time scales is a major challenge in modern health management. Pathogens that replicate outside the hosts are subject to selection imposed by ambient environmental conditions. Increased nutrient levels could increase pathogen virulence by pre-adapting for efficient use of resources upon contact to a nutrient rich host or by favouring transmission of fast-growing virulent strains. Genome-Wide Estimation of the Spontaneous Mutation Rate of Human Adenovirus 5 by High-Fidelity Deep Sequencing

Rates of spontaneous mutation determine the ability of viruses to evolve, infect new hosts, evade immunity and undergo drug resistance. Contrarily to RNA viruses, few mutation rate estimates have been obtained for DNA viruses, because their high replication fidelity implies that new mutations typically fall below the detection limits of Sanger and standard next-generation sequencing.
