Multi-Dimensional motivic pattern extraction founded on adaptive redundancy filtering
2005
Abstract We present a computational model for discovering repeated patterns in symbolic representations of monodic music. Patterns are discovered through an incremental adaptive identification along a multi-dimensional parametric space. The difficulties of pattern discovery mainly come from combinatorial redundancies, that our model is able to control efficiently. A specificity relation is defined between pattern descriptions, unifying suffix and inclusion relations and enabling a filtering of redundant descriptions. Combinatorial proliferation caused by successive repetitions of patterns is managed using cyclic patterns. The modelling of these redundancy control mechanisms enables an autom…
The effect of enriching milk-based beverages with plant sterols or stanols on the fatty acid composition of the products
2013
Five plant sterol (PS)-enriched dairy products from the Spanish market were characterised for fatty acids (FA), volatile compounds and lipid stability. The ingredients used for PS enrichment by the food industry may come from different sources, thus influencing the composition and stability of the lipid fraction. In this study, the FA profile proved highly variable among samples, not agreeing with the nutritional labelling of the products. The volatile profile was characterised. A total of 55 volatile compounds were identified in the samples by GC–MS. Concentrations of hexanal (from 1.1 to 7.5 ng/g), nonanal (from 0.9 to 1.2 ng/g) and decane (from n.d. to 11.9 ng/g) indicated a low lipid ox…
Effect of ultrasound pre-treatment and drying method on specialized metabolites of honeyberry fruits (Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica).
2019
Abstract Honeyberries are rich in various nutrients (eg. minerals, and vitamins) and bioactive compounds (eg. polyphenols). The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of ultrasound (USN) pre-treatment (100% power at 37 kHz) at 40 °C for 3 min and drying techniques (conduction or vacuum) on nutritional composition and bioactive compounds of honeyberry fruits. The evaluation of dried barriers revealed that both USN pre-treatment and drying techniques affected the composition of the final product. The highest vitamin C content (1.067–1.187 mg 100 g−1 DM) was found in fruit samples pre-treated by USN, regardless of the drying technology used. The highest total phenol (2.445 mg GAE 100 g−1 …
Composition of essential oil of lemon thyme (Thymus × citriodorus) at different hydrodistillation times.
2018
Distillation time can both to optimise the production and to engineer the composition of essential oil in essential oil bearing plants. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of duration of hydrodistillation on composition of essential oil of Thymus × citriodorus, the natural source of commercially important geraniol and citral, a component with valuable biological properties. Essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation at different distillation times and analysed by GC/MS analytical methods. Increase in percentage of essential oil during all hydrodistillation time gradient was uneven. Elongation of hydrodistillation time decreased percentages of monoterpenes but increased p…
Measurement report: PM2.5-bound nitrated aromatic compounds in Xi'an, Northwest China – seasonal variations an…
2021
Abstract. Nitrated aromatic compounds (NACs) are a group of key chromophores for brown carbon (light-absorbing organic carbon, i.e., BrC) aerosol, which affects radiative forcing. The chemical composition and sources of NACs and their contributions to BrC absorption, however, are still not well understood. In this study, PM 2.5 -bound NACs in Xi'an, Northwest China, were investigated for 112 daily PM 2.5 filter samples from 2015 to 2016. Both the total concentrations and contributions from individual species of NACs show distinct seasonal variations. The seasonally averaged concentrations of NACs are 2.1 (spring), 1.1 (summer), 12.9 (fall), and 56 ng m −3 (winter). Thereinto, 4-nitrophenol …
Staging the Impossible for Young Audiences: Preliminary Findings in a Research Project
2009
“You should not be able to notice that it is theatre for children!” says Suzanne Osten, Swedish theatre director. How is this view compatible with her statement that Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) should always take the child's perspective? In this article I draw attention to Osten's motivation and ability to do what some reckon to be impossible, unheard of, and/or irresponsible. Staging taboos such as divorce, suicide, eating disorders, and schizophrenia for children has been something of a trademark for Osten. I will widen the focus beyond the thematic content, by analyzing how she gives this a formal expression: how theoretical, aesthetic, kinesthetic, and playful approaches challenge…
Children’s Play and Art Practices with Agentic Objects
2018
Material objects, ranging from used pieces of gum to superhero capes, are an essential part of children’s play and art practices. However, such items are rarely analyzed as a part of children’s social interaction. Onto-epistemological, scientific, and bio-technological developments of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have enhanced the interest in physical objects within many academic disciplines, and led some to consider if objects, too, can have social agency. In this article, I use Bruno Latour’s actor-network theory (ANT) to analyze three kinds of objects in the context of children’s play and art practices: (1) physical objects, (2) digital objects, and (3) transformative and ima…
