Estimating Terrestrial Neutron-Induced SEB Cross-Sections and FIT Rates for High-Voltage SiC Power MOSFETs

2019

Cross sections and failure in time rates for neutron-induced single-event burnout (SEB) are estimated for SiC power MOSFETs using a method based on combining results from heavy ion SEB experimental data, 3-D TCAD prediction of sensitive volumes, and Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations of secondary particle production. The results agree well with experimental data and are useful in understanding the mechanisms for neutron-induced SEB data.

TLM Nodes: A New Look at an Old Problem

2015

In this paper, an alternative perspective on the transmission line modeling (TLM) method concepts to unify previous work is presented. The procedure begins by discretizing Maxwell’s equations and proposing TLM equivalent models. Node voltage and mesh current definitions are provided in terms of link line contributions, compatible with stub currents and voltages. They allow obtaining an expression that relates incident and reflected pulses with no other condition required. With this unified approach, modeling of other situations is straightforward. 2-D cases, source implementation, and anisotropic media are described and numerically tested.

Fast determination of impurities in metallurgical grade silicon for photovoltaics by instrumental neutron activation analysis

2010

Standard wafer solar cells are made of near-semiconductor quality silicon. This high quality material makes up a significant part of the total costs of a solar module. Therefore, new concepts with less expensive so called solar grade silicon directly based on physiochemically upgraded metallurgical grade silicon are investigated. Metallurgical grade silicon contains large amounts of impurities, mainly transition metals like Fe, Cr, Mn, and Co, which degrade the minority carrier lifetime and thus the solar cell efficiency. A major reduction of the transition metal content occurs during the unidirectional crystallization due to the low segregation coefficient between the solid and liquid phas…

Charge carrier transport mechanisms in CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

2016

In this work, we report on the results of electrical characterization of CdZnTe (CZT) detectors, with gold electroless contacts, grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), have the same electrode layout: the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard ring electrode. The cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were measured at different temperatures in order to study the charge transport and the electrical properties. These detectors were compared with the trav…

Blocking of an ion channel by a highly charged drug: Modeling the effects of applied voltage, electrolyte concentration, and drug concentration

2005

We present a simple physical model to estimate the blocked pore probability of an ion channel that can be blocked by a highly charged drug in solution. The model is inspired by recent experimental work on the blocking of the ${\mathrm{PA}}_{63}$ channel, involved in the anthrax toxin infection, by a highly charged drug [Karginov et al. PNAS 102, 15075 (2005)]. The drug binding to the pore is highly specific but the strong dependence of blocking on the applied voltage and electrolyte concentration suggests that long range electrostatic interactions are important. Since basic electrostatic concepts rather than detailed molecular models are considered, the microscopic details of the channel bl…

Fluoride-Induced Negative Differential Resistance in Nanopores: Experimental and Theoretical Characterization

2021

We describe experimentally and theoretically the fluoride-induced negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomena observed in conical nanopores operating in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The threshold voltage switching occurs around 1 V and leads to sharp current drops in the nA range with a peak-to-valley ratio close to 10. The experimental characterization of the NDR effect with single pore and multipore samples concern different pore radii, charge concentrations, scan rates, salt concentrations, solvents, and cations. The experimental fact that the effective radius of the pore tip zone is of the same order of magnitude as the Debye length for the low salt concentrations used here is su…

Effect of axially bound anions on the electroreduction of tin(IV) porphyrins in tetrahydrofuran

1989

The spectroscopic characterization and electrochemistry of SnL(X)2 is presented where L is the dianion of tetra-p-tolylporphyrin or tetra-m-tolylporphyrin and X is ClO4–, Br–, Cl–, F–, or OH–. In all cases, electroreduction leads to porphyrin π anion radicals and dianions which were characterized in tetrahydrofuran by spectroelectrochemistry and e.s.r. spectroscopy. Dissociation of one ClO4– ion from SnL(ClO4)2 occurs before electroreduction of the complex but no dissociation is observed either before or after electroreduction of SnL(F)2 or SnL(OH)2. In contrast, one Br– ion dissociates after the first electron addition to SnL(Br)2 while one Cl– ion dissociates from SnL(Cl)2 after the secon…

In situ spectroelectrochemical study of the reductive coupling of benzaldehyde catalyzed by Ti(III) complexes in the presence of Mg(II)

2003

Abstract The UV–vis spectroelectrochemical technique has been used to visualize for the first time, the formation of a trimetallic intermediate Ti(III)Mg(II)Ti(III) during the reductive coupling of benzaldehyde in the presence of electrogenerated Ti(III) and MgCl 2 . This intermediate is supposed to induce the high diastereoselectivity of the reaction. We have built a special thin layer cell adapted from the scheme proposed by A. Neudeck and L. Dunsch [‘J. Electroanal. Chem. 370 (1994) 17; J. Electroanal. Chem. 386 (1995) 135’] which allows the simultaneous recording of the cyclic voltammogram and of a great quantity of UV–vis spectra at a frequency of 1 spectrum per second by means of a …

Mechanism of the palladium-catalysed electrosynthesis of diethyl carbonate from carbon monoxide and ethanol

2004

Abstract A mechanism is proposed for the PdBr2(PPh3)2-catalysed electrosynthesis of diethyl carbonate from carbon monoxide and ethanol, proceeding at room temperature and atmospheric CO pressure. The mechanism is investigated by cyclic voltammetry and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The active Pd0 complex able to coordinate CO is generated by the chemical reduction of PdBr2(PPh3)2 by EtO– ions generated from EtOH at the cathode. After reaction of EtO– ions with Pd0(PPh3)2(CO), the ensuing anionic complex [(PPh3)2Pd0–COOEt]– is oxidized at the anode in a key step leading to BrPdII–COOEt(PPh3)2. A nucleophilic attack of ethoxide on the latter generates diethyl carbonate and the Pd0 complex active in th…
