Trigeneration and Polygeneration Configurations for Desalination and Other Beneficial Processes

2018

Abstract The integration of renewable energy sources (geothermal, biomass, and solar) and desalination systems into novel polygeneration plants is investigated. Two main arrangements are considered: geothermal (GP) and biomass (BP) polygeneration. Both systems include concentrating photovoltaic/thermal solar collectors, a multieffect distillation system for seawater desalination, a single-effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller, storage tanks, heat exchangers, balance-of-plant devices; a biomass auxiliary heater and geothermal wells are also included, in BP and GP, respectively. The systems can provide electricity and hot water, used for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water production, and…

2015

During the last years, special attention has been paid to renewable polygeneration technologies, able of simultaneously producing thermal, cooling, electrical energy and desalinated water from seawater. This paper focuses on an innovative polygeneration system driven by renewable energy sources, including the following technologies: hybrid photovoltaic/thermal collectors, concentrating parabolic trough (CPVT), a biomass heater, a single-stage absorption chiller and a multiple-effect distillation desalination system. The system is designed to cover the base load of an isolated small community. In previous papers, the dynamic simulation model about plant operation is discussed. In this paper,…

Exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of a renewable polygeneration system and viability study for small isolated communities

2015

Abstract A great interest has recently arisen for the sustainable supply of energy and fresh water, due to the growing demand from developing countries. Facing this demand by traditional technologies implies evident risks related with the high cost of fossil fuels and their environmental impact. Then, alternative solutions based on the use of renewable sources and innovative technologies must be considered. In this paper a renewable polygeneration system is examined, which includes a solar field based on parabolic trough photovoltaic/thermal collectors, a biomass heater, an absorption chiller and a Multiple Effect Distillation desalination unit. Plant operation under dynamic conditions has …

A methodology for selecting a sustainable development strategy for connecting low heat density consumers to a district heating system by cascading of…

2021

Abstract The paper presents a methodology for supporting the decision making on how to sustainably develop an existing district heating system when consumers located in a remote, low-heat consumption density area are connected to the system. Several scenarios are proposed where a multi-generative system is assessed by implementation of industrial heat pumps (HP), solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and low-temperature regime into an existing district heating system in various combinations. The methodology is based on multi-criteria analysis allowing for energy, economic, exergy, and environmental (4E) assessment. The research is based on a case study of an autonomous district heating system in …

Know your full potential: Quantitative Kelvin probe force microscopy on nanoscale electrical devices

2018

In this study we investigate the influence of the operation method in Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) on the measured potential distribution. KPFM is widely used to map the nanoscale potential distribution in operating devices, e.g., in thin film transistors or on cross sections of functional solar cells. Quantitative surface potential measurements are crucial for understanding the operation principles of functional nanostructures in these electronic devices. Nevertheless, KPFM is prone to certain imaging artifacts, such as crosstalk from topography or stray electric fields. Here, we compare different amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) KPFM methods on a reference s…

3D Colloidal photonic crystal fabrication improved by AC fields for frequency conversion enhancement in photovoltaics

2011

We report on the fabrication of high-quality 3D colloidal photonic crystals, whose finality is to modify the emission properties of frequency converters for photovoltaic applications. The band structure of the photonic crystals can be used to enhance the emission of down- and up-converters materials embedded in the 3D structures. However, in order to achieve an efficient conversion the first step is to obtain highly ordered templates with appropriated dimensions. We analyze here the photonic crystals obtained by the dip-coating or vertical deposition method. Moreover, by using perpendicular AC fields during the assembly of the nanospheres, the quality of the packed structures has been impro…

Phenothiazine-based dyes for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

2016

As an emerging photovoltaic technology, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted a great deal of academic and industrial interest due to their reasonably high power conversion efficiency, low material cost and facile fabrication process. Metal-free organic dyes, as one of the key components of DSSCs, play a pivotal role in light harvesting and electron injection. Among the various species of organic dyes, easily tunable 10H-phenothiazine-based dyes hold a large proportion. The electron-rich nitrogen and sulfur atoms render 10H-phenothiazine a stronger donor character than other amines, even better than triphenylamine, tetrahydroquinoline, carbazole and iminodibenzyl. On the other h…

Electrical characterization of deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization in metal-oxide-semiconductor-like structures

2012

In this work, metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-like sensors in which deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands are covalently immobilized either on Si oxide or on a gold surface were electrically characterized. Si oxide fabrication process allowed us to have a surface insensitive to the solution pH. A significant shift in the flat band voltage was measured after single strand DNA immobilization (+0.47 +/- 0.04 V) and after the complementary strand binding (+0.07 +/- 0.02 V). The results show that DNA sensing can be performed using a MOS structure which can be easily integrated in a more complex design, thus avoiding the problems related to the integration of micro-electrochemical cells.

Advances in Perovskite Solar Cells.

2015

Organolead halide perovskite materials possess a combination of remarkable optoelectronic properties, such as steep optical absorption edge and high absorption coefficients, long charge carrier diffusion lengths and lifetimes. Taken together with the ability for low temperature preparation, also from solution, perovskite-based devices, especially photovoltaic (PV) cells have been studied intensively, with remarkable progress in performance, over the past few years. The combination of high efficiency, low cost and additional (non-PV) applications provides great potential for commercialization. Performance and applications of perovskite solar cells often correlate with their device structures…

Vapor-Deposited Perovskites: The Route to High-Performance Solar Cell Production?

2017

Summary High-quality semiconducting perovskites can be easily synthesized through several methods. The ease of fabrication has favored the adoption of lab-scale solution-processing techniques, which have yielded the highest performing devices. Most of these processes, however, are not directly applicable to larger scale and volume preparations, hindering the consolidation and market entry of this technology. Vapor-based methods, a mature technology widely adopted in the coating and semiconductor industry, could change this trend. Their application to perovskite solar cells includes a large amount of fabrication approaches, offering versatility in the employed materials as well as in the cha…
