A study on time discretization and adaptive mesh refinement methods for the simulation of cancer invasion: The urokinase model

2016

In the present work we investigate a model that describes the chemotactically and proteolytically driven tissue invasion by cancer cells. The model is a system of advection-reaction-diffusion equations that takes into account the role of the serine protease urokinase-type plasminogen activator. The analytical and numerical study of such a system constitutes a challenge due to the merging, emerging, and traveling concentrations that the solutions exhibit. Classical numerical methods applied to this system necessitate very fine discretization grids to resolve these dynamics in an accurate way. To reduce the computational cost without sacrificing the accuracy of the solution, we apply adaptive…

Transfer Free Energies of Test Proteins Into Crowded Protein Solutions Have Simple Dependence on Crowder Concentration

2019

The effects of macromolecular crowding on the thermodynamic properties of test proteins are determined by the latter's transfer free energies from a dilute solution to a crowded solution. The transfer free energies in turn are determined by effective protein-crowder interactions. When these interactions are modeled at the all-atom level, the transfer free energies may defy simple predictions. Here we investigated the dependence of the transfer free energy (Δμ) on crowder concentration. We represented both the test protein and the crowder proteins atomistically, and used a general interaction potential consisting of hard-core repulsion, non-polar attraction, and solvent-screened electrostati…

Modulation of Hippocampal Circuits by Muscarinic and Nicotinic Receptors

2017

This article provides a review of the effects of activation of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors on the physiological properties of circuits in the hippocampal formation. Previous articles have described detailed computational hypotheses about the role of cholinergic neuromodulation in enhancing the dynamics for encoding in cortical structures and the role of reduced cholinergic modulation in allowing consolidation of previously encoded information. This article will focus on addressing the broad scope of different modulatory effects observed within hippocampal circuits, highlighting the heterogeneity of cholinergic modulation in terms of the physiological effects of activation of muscarin…

GPU-Based Optimisation of 3D Sensor Placement Considering Redundancy, Range and Field of View

2020

This paper presents a novel and efficient solution for the 3D sensor placement problem based on GPU programming and massive parallelisation. Compared to prior art using gradient-search and mixed-integer based approaches, the method presented in this paper returns optimal or good results in a fraction of the time compared to previous approaches. The presented method allows for redundancy, i.e. requiring selected sub-volumes to be covered by at least n sensors. The presented results are for 3D sensors which have a visible volume represented by cones, but the method can easily be extended to work with sensors having other range and field of view shapes, such as 2D cameras and lidars.

Housing market shocks in italy: A GVAR approach

2020

Abstract In this paper, we use a Global Vector Autoregression (GVAR) model to assess the spatio-temporal mechanism of house price spillovers, also known as “ripple effect”, among 93 Italian provincial housing markets, over the period 2004 − 2016 . In order to better capture the local housing market dynamics, we use data not only on house prices but also on transaction volumes. In particular, we focus on estimating, to what extent, exogenous shocks, interpreted as negative housing demand shocks, arising from 10 Italian regional capitals, impact on their house prices and sales and how these shocks spill over to neighbours housing markets. The negative housing market demand shock hitting the G…

Rheological characterisation of cold bitumen emulsion slurries

2021

The performance of cold bitumen emulsion (CBE) mixtures is strongly linked to an optimised design of the binder blends and mastics. Types and dosages of bitumen, mineral additions and the workability must be characterised and optimised. This study aims at providing an approach for the fundamental characterisation of CBE materials using rotational viscometry. Firstly, a procedure for measuring the viscosity of CBE slurries using the Brookfield viscometer was investigated by comparing results obtained by using a traditional spindle geometry and a novel impeller engineered to avoid phase separation: the dual helical ribbon (DHR). Afterwards, the effect of mineral additions and bitumen emulsion…

Is Body Fat a Predictor of Race Time in Female Long-Distance Inline Skaters?

2010

Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate predictor variables of race time in female ultra-endurance inliners in the longest inline race in Europe. Methods We investigated the association between anthropometric and training characteristics and race time for 16 female ultra-endurance inline skaters, at the longest inline marathon in Europe, the ‘Inline One-eleven’ over 111 km in Switzerland, using bi- and multivariate analysis. Results The mean (SD) race time was 289.7 (54.6) min. The bivariate analysis showed that body height (r=0.61), length of leg (r=0.61), number of weekly inline skating training sessions (r=-0.51) and duration of each training unit (r=0.61) were significantly correl…

Densities, Viscosities, and Refractive Indices of the Binary Systems Methyl tert-Butyl Ether + 2-Methylpentane, + 3-Methylpentane, + 2,3-Dimethylpent…

2000

This paper reports experimental densities, viscosities, and refractive indices of the binary systems methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) + 2-methylpentane, + 3-methylpentane, + 2,3-dimethylpentane, and + 2,2,4-trimethylpentane over the entire range of composition, at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations were evaluated from the experimental data. These excess or derived properties were fitted to the Redlich−Kister equation to estimate the binary interaction parameters. The experimental values of viscosity have been compared to values predicted by means of the GC−UNIMOD model.

Polyoxypregnanes as safe, potent, and specific ABCB1-inhibitory pro-drugs to overcome multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo

2021

Multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) is significantly hindering effective cancer chemotherapy. However, currently, no ABCB1-inhibitory drugs have been approved to treat MDR cancer clinically, mainly due to the inhibitor specificity, toxicity, and drug interactions. Here, we reported that three polyoxypregnanes (POPs) as the most abundant constituents of Marsdenia tenacissima (M. tenacissima) were novel ABCB1-modulatory pro-drugs, which underwent intestinal microbiota-mediated biotransformation in vivo to generate active metabolites. The metabolites at non-toxic concentrations restored chemosensitivity in ABCB1-overexpressing cancer cells v…
