Study of the anisotropy in turbulent superfluids

2010

In this review we are interested on the anisotropy and polarity of superfluid turbulence in helium II, a still open problem which needs more details. Though some of the results presented here have already been published in different papers, this short review aims to put the main results together and to extend them when necessary. From the mesoscopic viewpoint, an evolution equation for the vortex line density was proposed in rotating counterflow (heat flux without mass flux) by means of dimensional analysis. Then, starting from the microscopic viewpoint this evolution equation was further extended to include situations where turbulence is not homogeneously distributed. Indeed, microscopical…

Inhomogeneous vortex tangles in counterflow superfluid turbulence: flow in convergent channels

2016

Abstract We investigate the evolution equation for the average vortex length per unit volume L of superfluid turbulence in inhomogeneous flows. Inhomogeneities in line density L andincounterflowvelocity V may contribute to vortex diffusion, vortex formation and vortex destruction. We explore two different families of contributions: those arising from asecondorder expansionofthe Vinenequationitself, andthose whichare notrelated to the original Vinen equation but must be stated by adding to it second-order terms obtained from dimensional analysis or other physical arguments.

Refrigeration of an array of cylindrical nanosystems by superfluid helium counterflow

2017

Abstract Motivated by the challenge of computer refrigeration, we study the limits set by the transition to quantum turbulence on the cooling of an array of heat-producing cylindrical nanosystems by means of superfluid-helium counterflow. The effective thermal conductivity in laminar counterflow superfluid helium is obtained in channels with rectangular cross section, through arrays of mutually parallel cylinders and in the combined situation of arrays of orthogonal cylinders inside the rectangular channel. The maximum cooling capacity is analyzed on the condition that turbulence is avoided and that the highest temperature does not exceed the lambda temperature.

Boundary-layer Flows Past an Hemispherical Roughness Element: DNS, Global Stability and Sensitivity Analysis

2015

Abstract We investigate the full three-dimensional instability mechanism arising in the wake of an hemispherical roughness element immersed in a laminar Blasius boundary layer. The inherent three-dimensional flow pattern beyond the critical Reynolds number is characterized by coherent vortical structures called hairpin vortices. Direct numerical simulation is used to analyze the formation and the shedding of hairpin packets inside the shear layer. The first bifurcation characteristics are investigated by global stability tools. We show the spatial structure of the linear direct and adjoint global eigenmodes of the linearized Navier-Stokes operator and use structural sensitivity analysis to …

Wave propagation in anisotropic turbulent superfluids

2013

In this work, a hydrodynamical model of Superfluid Turbulence previously formulated is applied to study how the presence of a non-isotropic turbulent vortex tangle modifies the propagation of waves. Two cases are considered: wave front parallel and orthogonal to the heat flux. Using a perturbation method, the first-order corrections due to the presence of the vortex tangle to the speeds and to the amplitudes of the first and second sound are determined. It is seen that the presence of the quantized vortices couples first and second sound, and the attenuation of second sound is proportional to the line density L if the wave propagates orthogonal to the heat flux, while it is proportional to …

Three-dimensional splitting dynamics of giant vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

2018

We study the splitting dynamics of giant vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by numerically integrating the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in time. By taking advantage of tetrahedral tiling in the spatial discretization, we decrease the error and increase the reliability of the numerical method. An extensive survey of vortex splitting symmetries is presented for different aspect ratios of the harmonic trapping potential. The symmetries of the splitting patterns observed in the simulated dynamics are found to be in good agreement with predictions obtained by solving the dominant dynamical instabilities from the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. Furthermore, we observe…

Generation of programmable 3D optical vortex structures through devil’s vortex-lens arrays

2013

Different spatial distributions of optical vortices have been generated and characterized by implementing arrays of devil's vortex lenses in a reconfigurable spatial light modulator. A simple design procedure assigns the preferred position and topological charge value to each vortex in the structure, tuning the desired angular momentum. Distributions with charges and momenta of the opposite sign have been experimentally demonstrated. The angular velocity exhibited by the phase distribution around the focal plane has been visualized, showing an excellent agreement with the simulations. The practical limits of the method, with interest for applications involving particle transfer and manipula…
