Bacterial sensors based on biosilica immobilization for label-free OWLS detection

2013

In the last years, a new group of enzymes, the so-called silicateins, have been identified and characterized, which form the axial filaments of the spicules of the siliceous sponges, consisting of not only amorphous silica among others. These enzymes are able to catalyze the polycondensation and deposition of silica at mild conditions. Silicateins can be expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant proteins are expressed on the surface of the cell wall and are able to catalyze the formation of a polysilicate net around the bacterial cells providing the possibility for further attachment to the surface of SiO2 containing sensor chips. With this mild immobilization process it is now possibl…

Intravenous Contrast Agent in Abdominal CT: Is It Really Needed to Identify the Cause of Bowel Obstruction? Proof of Concept

2019

Background. To compare sensitivity of unenhanced computed tomography (CT) and contrast-enhanced CT for the identification of the etiology of bowel obstruction.Materials and Methods. We retrospectively evaluated abdominal CT scans of patients operated for bowel obstruction from March 2013 to October 2017. Two radiologists evaluated CT scans before and after contrast agent in two reading sessions. Then, we calculated sensitivity of CT in the diagnosis of bowel obstruction and determined in which cases the etiology of bowel obstruction was detected on both unenhanced and enhanced CT or on enhanced CT only. The reference standard was defined as the final diagnosis obtained after surgery. Results…

Lionello Perera: An Italian Banker and Patron in New York

2022

The book presents the long-lost biography of Lionello Perera, principal banker, patron, and philanthropist of the Italian American community in New York at the inception of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Venice, Lionello Perera took over his uncle’s financial activity in Wall Street and developed the family business into a stronghold of the Italian American community. His remarkable career led him to become the Vice President of Bank of America in 1928 as an associate of California born Amadeo P. Giannini, while he also was instrumental to the political success of New York mayor Fiorello La Guardia. Recognised as a true founding father of the Italian American community of the Eas…

Spin torques and magnetic texture dynamics driven by the supercurrent in superconductor/ferromagnet structures

2018

We introduce the general formalism to describe spin torques induced by the supercurrents injected from the adjacent superconducting electrodes into the spin-textured ferromagnets. By considering the adiabatic limit for the equal-spin superconducting correlations in the ferromagnet we show that the supercurrent can generate both the field-like spin transfer torque and the spin-orbital torque. These dissipationless spin torques are expressed through the current-induced corrections to the effective field derived from the system energy. The general formalism is applied to show that the supercurrent can either shift or move the magnetic domain walls depending on their structure and the type of s…

Measurements of tunneling conduction to carbon nanotubes and its sensitivity to oxygen gas

2012

We have measured the conductive properties of junctions between carbon nanotubes (CNT) and non-noble metals $M$ ($M$ = Al, Ti, Nb), which are separated by the native oxide (${M}_{\mathit{OX}}$) of the metal. Reproducible and asymmetric current-voltage characteristics were obtained from Ti/Ti${}_{\mathit{OX}}$/CNT and Nb/Nb${}_{\mathit{OX}}$/CNT junctions, while Al/Al${}_{\mathit{OX}}$/CNT exhibited no current until breakdown, which is attributed to the larger bandgap of Al${}_{\mathit{OX}}$. The conduction in the Ti- and Nb-based junctions is not due to direct tunneling since they exhibit strong temperature dependence. The presence of oxygen is shown to drastically, but reversibly, modify t…

Mannoproteins from the cell wall ofKluyveromyces lactis

1986

Wall mannoproteins from Kluyveromyces lactis have been solubilised by treatment of cell walls with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) or zymolyase. While the former reagent liberates a large number of molecular species, zymolyase preferentially releases a high-molecular-weight material that is sensitive to endo-β-N-acetylglucosaminidase H, and a 29-kDa molecule that reacts with the antiserum raised against a similar species from walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In contrast with observations on isolated walls of S. cerevisiae, dithiothreitol pretreatment of K. lactis walls does not enhance the effect of zymolyase upon mannoprotein release. However, the action of thiol agents is still necessary …

Feature Ranking of Large, Robust, and Weighted Clustering Result

2017

A clustering result needs to be interpreted and evaluated for knowledge discovery. When clustered data represents a sample from a population with known sample-to-population alignment weights, both the clustering and the evaluation techniques need to take this into account. The purpose of this article is to advance the automatic knowledge discovery from a robust clustering result on the population level. For this purpose, we derive a novel ranking method by generalizing the computation of the Kruskal-Wallis H test statistic from sample to population level with two different approaches. Application of these enlargements to both the input variables used in clustering and to metadata provides a…

Large eddy simulation of inertial particles dispersion in a turbulent gas-particle channel flow bounded by rough walls

2020

The purpose of this paper is to understand the capability and consistency of large eddy simulation (LES) in Eulerian–Lagrangian studies aimed at predicting inertial particle dispersion in turbulent wall-bounded flows, in the absence of ad hoc closure models in the Lagrangian equations of particle motion. The degree of improvement granted by LES models is object of debate, in terms of both accurate prediction of particle accumulation and local particle segregation; therefore, we assessed the accuracy in the prediction of the particle velocity statistics by comparison against direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a finer computational mesh, under both one-way and two-way coupling regimes. We p…

Successful Foley catheter tamponade of an epigastric vessel trocar injury in a toddler – A case report

2021

Highlights • Epigastric vessel injury is a well recognized complication during laparoscopic trocar placement. • Precautionary measures to prevent trocar induced injuries should be implemented to lower the incidence of this complication. • If this complication is encountered, tamponade by Foley catheter placement is an effective measure to provide hemostasis. • Hemorrhage control using a Foley catheter is feasible even in small children and toddlers.
