Myelin Proteome Analysis: Methods and Implications for the Myelin Cytoskeleton

2012

Myelin, the multilayered membrane that enwraps and insulates neuronal axons for fast signal propagation, is a plasma membrane specialization of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the central and peripheral nervous system, respectively. Here we provide our lab protocols for the puri fi cation of myelin from mouse brains and for gel-based and gel-free proteomic applications, as well as a brief discussion with respect to our current knowledge of the myelin cytoskeleton.

Minimization of childhood maltreatment is common and consequential: results from a large, multinational sample using the childhood trauma questionnai…

2016

Childhood maltreatment has diverse, lifelong impact on morbidity and mortality. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) is one of the most commonly used scales to assess and quantify these experiences and their impact. Curiously, despite very widespread use of the CTQ, scores on its Minimization-Denial (MD) subscale-originally designed to assess a positive response bias-are rarely reported. Hence, little is known about this measure. If response biases are either common or consequential, current practices of ignoring the MD scale deserve revision. Therewith, we designed a study to investigate 3 aspects of minimization, as defined by the CTQ's MD scale: 1) its prevalence; 2) its latent struc…

Areas of research and clinical approaches to the study of liver abscess

2016

AIM To analyze the research activity on liver abscess (LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the area. METHODS We identified all documents using the medical subject heading "LA" indexed in the MEDLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest (case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify th…

Jubileusz 25-lecia Muzeum Diecezjalnego w Opolu

2013

Across the ages the Church has been concerned with the cultural heritage of its members. The mid-eighteenth century witnessed discernible interest in religious objects excluded from the cult and emphasis was placed on the evangelisation role of church museums, which, interested in the fate of useless artworks removed from church interiors, collected, stored, and conserved them as well as rendered them available to society. The anniversary of the Diocesan Museum in Opole became an excellent occasion for taking a closer look at its history and assess the part it played in the course of the past quarter of a century. The idea of establishing such a museum dates back to 1978 – the year when Alf…

The Family-Resemblances Framework for Mind-Wandering Remains Well Clad

2018

Christoff et al. [1] reject our family-resemblances framework for mind-wandering research [2] and instead seek to characterize mind-wandering with a necessary defining feature. As an example, they point to their ‘dynamic framework’ [3] that defines mind-wandering as thoughts that ‘proceed in a relatively free, unconstrained fashion.’ We outline three primary points of disagreement with their commentary and two points of clarification on the family-resemblances framework.

Appropriate kernels for Divisive Normalization explained by Wilson-Cowan equations

2018

The interaction between wavelet-like sensors in Divisive Normalization is classically described through Gaussian kernels that decay with spatial distance, angular distance and frequency distance. However, simultaneous explanation of (a) distortion perception in natural image databases and (b) contrast perception of artificial stimuli requires very specific modifications in classical Divisive Normalization. First, the wavelet response has to be high-pass filtered before the Gaussian interaction is applied. Then, distinct weights per subband are also required after the Gaussian interaction. In summary, the classical Gaussian kernel has to be left- and right-multiplied by two extra diagonal ma…

SDN@home: A Method for Controlling Future Wireless Home Networks

2016

Recent advances in wireless networking technologies are leading toward the proliferation of novel home network applications. However, the landscape of emerging scenarios is fragmented due to their varying technological requirements and the heterogeneity of current wireless technologies. We argue that the development of flexible software-defined wireless architectures, including such efforts as the wireless MAC processor, coupled with SDN concepts, will enable the support of both emerging and future home applications. In this article, we first identify problems with managing current home networks composed of separate network segments governed by different technologies. Second, we point out t…

More than experience? On the unique opportunities of virtual reality to afford a holistic experiential learning cycle

2021

Virtual reality has been proposed as a promising technology for higher education since the combination of immersive and interactive features enables experiential learning. However, previous studies did not distinguish between the different learning modes of the four-stage experiential learning cycle (i.e., concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation). With our study, we contribute a deeper understanding of how the unique opportunities of virtual reality can afford each of the four experiential learning modes. We conducted three design thinking workshops with interdisciplinary teams of students and lecturers. These workshops resulted in…
