Zinc oxide and indium tin oxide thin films for the growth and characterization ofShewanella loihicaPV-4 electroactive biofilms

2011

Transition metal oxides (TMO) electrodes provide a suitable platform for spectroscopy- and microscopy-based investigation of viable electroactive biofilms (EABs). Commercially available TMOs, such as indium titanium oxide (ITO), are produced from rare and expensive elements. Thus, there is a significant need to explore alternative technology to meet the demand. ZnO-based TMOs are low-cost and have excellent electrochemical properties. In this study, we report for the first time a model EAB of Shewanella loihica PV-4 on ZnO films deposited on perspex substrates via pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Commercially available ITO electrodes were also used for comparison. 480 Virulence Volume 2 Issue…

PCA-based source-space contrast maps reveal psychologically meaningful individual differences in continuous MEG activity

2019

AbstractWithin the field of neuroimaging, there has been an increasing trend towards studying brain activity in naturalistic conditions, and it is possible to robustly estimate networks of on-going oscillatory activity in the brain. However, not many studies have focused on differences between individuals in on-going brain activity that would be associable to psychological or behavioral characteristics. Existing standard methods can perform well at single-participant level, but generalizing the methodology across many participants is challenging due to individual differences of brains. As an example of a clinically relevant, naturalistic condition we consider here mindfulness. Trait mindful…

Mineral profile of kaki fruits (Diospyros kaki L.)

2015

The main objective of this study was the determination of the mineral profile of 167 kaki fruit (Diospyros kaki L.) samples produced from different regions of Spain, including samples with the protected designation of origin (PDO) 'Kaki Ribera del Xúquer' Valencia (Spain). Samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Consumption of one piece of kaki fruit (200-400 g) would give a mineral intake providing 1-10% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium, 1-30% for copper and potassium, 1-15% from iron and magnesium, up to 1% of sodium, and up to 4% of zinc. ANOVA analysis indic…

Sentieri interrotti. Musicisti europei nel crepuscolo dell'Occidente

2012

Oligodendrocyte and Schwann Cell Identification Methods

2009

Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells were first identified using light and electron microscopy of tissue. With the definition of proteins and lipids specific to these cells, antigen localization or in situ hybridization of the mRNA has facilitated identification in vivo and in vitro. Transgenic and ‘knockin’ mice have been generated in which cells expressing a specific promoter are fluorescently labeled. This permits isolation of the cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and the study of the labeled cells in situ by techniques such as electrophysiology. Transgenic zebra fish, in which the glial cells are similarly labeled, facilitate studies of these cells in the living animal.

Interwencja NATO w Jugosławii w 1999 roku. W dwudziestą rocznicę ataku – przyczyny i konsekwencje

2019

Trudn…

Fitocenozy mannicy odstającej i solirodu zielnego Puccinellio distantis-Salicornietum brachystachyae (Wilkoń-Michalska 1963) R. Tx. 1974 w rezerwacie…

2019

Obecnie najwyższe zasolenie i występowanie fitocenoz zespołu mannicy odstającej i solirodu zielnego Puccinellio distantis-Salicornietum brachystachyae (Wilkoń-Michalska 1963) R. Tx. 1974 zostało stwierdzone w obrębie płytkiego rowu odprowadzającego słone wody burzowe spod tężni solankowych, tężni nr 2 i 3. W latach 2015–2017 r. zbiorowiska solniskowe obejmowały niewielką część rezerwatu i obszaru Natura 2000, o powierzchni około 2…

The fine structure of de-and reinnervated muscle spindles

1974

Reinnervated muscle spindles in lower lumbrical muscles of rats studied 17 days to 24 months after crushing the sciatic nerve showed a series of alterations which have not been analysed, thus far, by electron microscopy. There was a striking increase of the number of intrafusal muscle fibers seen in approximately 20% of reinnervated spindles. These spindles showed 5–11 intrafusal muscle fibers whereas normal spindles usually contained 3–4 fibers only.

Wrapping it up: the cell biology of myelination.

2007

During nervous system development, oligodendroglia in the central nervous system (CNS) and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) synthesise large amounts of specific proteins and lipids to generate myelin, a specialised membrane that spirally ensheathes axons and facilitates fast conduction of the action potential. Myelination is initiated after glial processes have attached to the axon and polarisation of the plasma membrane has been triggered. Myelin assembly is a multi-step process that occurs in spatially distinct regions of the cell. We propose that assembly of myelin proteins and lipids starts during their transport through the biosynthetic pathway and continues at the …

Emerging Therapeutic Strategies for Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

2020

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurologic condition with tremendous socioeconomic impact on affected individuals and the health care system. The treatment of SCI principally includes surgical treatment and marginal pharmacologic and rehabilitation therapies targeting secondary events with minor clinical improvements. This unsuccessful result mainly reflects the complexity of SCI pathophysiology and the diverse biochemical and physiologic changes that occur in the injured spinal cord. Once the nervous system is injured, cascades of cellular and molecular events are triggered at varying times. Although the cascade of tissue reactions and cell injury develops over a period of days …
