Filtration of Nordic recirculating aquaculture system wastewater: Effects on microalgal growth, nutrient removal, and nutritional value

Abstract Microalgal bioremediation of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) wastewater represents an alternative for wastewater treatment with the potential to generate valuable biomass. This study evaluated the effects of removing biological contamination and suspended solids from Nordic area RAS wastewater through filtration with 0.45 μm filters on the performance and nutritional value of microalgae. All three tested green microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis, Monoraphidium griffithii, and Selenastrum sp.) were able to grow in raw (unfiltered) and filtered RAS wastewater. Abstract The sedimentability of the activated sludge can be affected by the presence of a large variety of coagulants and polymers from a previous physical-chemical process. In this paper, the activated sludge settling process in industrial wastewater treatment plants where the sludge does not settle in a conventional way is studied. The two observed constant hindered settling velocity stages and the instant the intermediate sludge acceleration period occurs are described. This paper addresses the problem of evaluating the environmental performances of Urban Waste Systems. Specifically, the paper refers to the crucial problem of environmentally analysing the Urban Waste System Management Process. The application of the Dashboard of Sustainability has been deliberately suggested. The method has been selected because of its intrinsic simplicity and because it can provide the simultaneous evaluation of indicators which refer to different fields, such as the Environment, Economics and Quality in Institutional Services. The method has been applied to the city of Palermo. The results obtained have been compared to a couple of ideal scenarios.

Aquaculture in Sicily, represented almost exclusively by seabass and sea bream production, together with capture fishery, plays a significant role in the regional economy. On a national basis, the regional production covers about 20% of Italian euryha- line fish production. Fingerling supply is guaranteed by the two hatcheries present on the Island.
