Supplementary methods, figures, tables and information from Use of nursery areas by the extinct megatooth shark Otodus megalodon (Chondrichthyes: Lam…
2020
Nursery areas are fundamental for the success of many marine species, particularly for large, slow-growing taxa with low fecundity and high age of maturity. Here, we examine the population size-class structure of the extinct gigantic shark Otodus megalodon in a newly described middle Miocene locality from Northeastern Spain, as well as in eight previously known formations (Temblor, Calvert, Pisco, Gatun, Chucunaque, Bahía Inglesa, Yorktown and Bone Valley). In all cases, body lengths of all individuals were inferred from dental parameters and the size-class structure was estimated from Kernel probability density functions and Gaussian mixture models. Our analyses support the presence of fiv…
The Synergistic Impacts of Anthropogenic Stressors and COVID-19 on Aquaculture: A Current Global Perspective
2021
The rapid, global spread of COVID-19, and the measures intended to limit or slow its propagation, are having major impacts on diverse sectors of society. Notably, these impacts are occurring in the context of other anthropogenic-driven threats including global climate change. Both anthropogenic stressors and the COVID-19 pandemic represent significant economic challenges to aquaculture systems across the globe, threatening the supply chain of one of the most important sources of animal protein, with potential disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities. A web survey was conducted in 47 countries in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic to assess how aquaculture activities have been affe…

Figure S4 from Species' ecological functionality alters the outcome of fish stocking success predicted by a food-web model
2018
Changes in the adult whitefish and perch biomasses in response to increased whitefish (Wht300; black) and perch stocking (Wht300+Per50; red) compared to the whitefish baseline (Wht200; gray) under Fmax = 0.4 (10% lower fishing pressure than in the main text), Fmax = 0.5 (fishing pressure in the main text), and under Fmax = 0.6 (10% higher fishing pressure than in the main text). Dashed lines indicate the time point when fishing was introduced to the simulations.

ESM - Material and Methods from Species' ecological functionality alters the outcome of fish stocking success predicted by a food-web model

Fish stocking is used worldwide in conservation and management, but its effects on food-web dynamics and ecosystem stability are poorly known. To better understand these effects and predict the outcomes of stocking, we used an empirically validated network model of a well-studied lake ecosystem. We simulate two stocking scenarios with two native fish species valuable for fishing. In the first scenario, we stock planktivorous fish (whitefish) larvae in the ecosystem. This leads to a 1% increase in adult whitefish biomasses and decreases the biomasses of the top predator (perch). In the second scenario, we also stock perch larvae in the ecosystem. This decreases the planktivorous whitefish an…

The phylogenetic distribution and sequence conservation of KIAA0556 orthologs in eukaryotes. Presence and sequence conservation of KIAA0556 are projected on the eukaryotic species tree to visualise the phylogenetic distribution of KIAA0556 orthologues as well as the distribution of the triple-repeat and quadruple-repeat configurations of the DUF4457 domains of unknown function. The black circles and white circles indicate which eukaryotic species contain or lack cilia/flagella. Recent KIAA0556 duplicates in Branchiostoma floridae and Paramecium tetraurelia are denoted by x2. *Dictyostelium discoideum protein sequence contains many â Nâ s (uncalled bases) in the N-terminal part of the sequen…
Supplementary tables and figures from Negative associations between parasite avoidance, resistance and tolerance predict host health in salmonid fish…
2020
Genetic variation in defence against parasite infections is fundamental for host–parasite evolution. The overall level of defence of a host individual or population includes mechanisms that reduce parasite exposure (avoidance), establishment (resistance) or pathogenicity (tolerance). However, how these traits operate and evolve in concert is not well understood. Here, we investigated genetic variation in and associations between avoidance, resistance and tolerance in a natural host–parasite system. Replicated populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (an anadromous form of brown trout, Salmo trutta) were raised under common garden conditions and infected with the eye fluke …
