Segesta, Santuario di Contrada Mango. Materiali e contesti degli scavi Tusa

2023

The volume is the edition of the old excavations carried out in Segesta, at the Sanctuary of Contrada Mango, between the 1950s and the 1960s of the twentieth century. The sanctuary is located on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Barbaro. It has returned a monumental peribolos and the remains of a peripteral temple. The sacred area documents phenomena of cultural interaction between the Elymian center and the Hellenic environment (Selinuntine first of all) in the Archaic and Classical Ages. It is an intense and multiform relationship, now made tangible not only by the monumental sacred architecture but also by the architectural ornamentations, the statuary in Parian marble, the imported cera…

Le armi dal complesso sacro di Contrada Gaggera a Selinunte: alcuni dati preliminari

2022

The review of bronze finds from the excavations carried out in the contrada Gaggera sanctuaries from 1888 until 1925 as well as in the sixties and seventies of the last century, and the reading of old excavation notebooks have allowed the identification of a huge number of unpublished weapons. This evidence has also been considered in relation to what has been published by Ettore Gabrici in the 1927 edition of the Malophoros sanctuary. The study better clarifies the finding context of these materials (from the sanctuary of Demeter Malophoros or from the sacred area of Zeus Meilichios) and provides an overview of the different types of weapons. The most recurring objects turn out to be arrow…

Le armi dal santuario di contrada Mango a Segesta

2022

The research focuses on weapons coming from the extra-urban sanctuary of contrada Mango in Segesta, investigated between the fifties and sixties of the 20th century. The study illustrates the types and chronology of the »indigenous« and Greek weapons (mainly defensive) attested in the sanctuary, and clarifies and discusses the location of the finds (along the south, north and east peribolos walls). Finally, the research tries to understand the function and role of the weapons in the sacred area. This category of votives is also interpreted in the light of other findings from the sanctuary that refer to war, mainly some fragments of a Parian marble statue of Nike of the middle of the 5th cen…

Surgical Highways to the Craniovertebral Junction: Is It Time for a Reappraisal?

2019

Background: The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) can be affected by a variety of congenital or acquired anomalies. Because of its complexity, a careful evaluation of bones and ligamentous structures in all three planes is required. This can be achieved by studying the CVJ in terms of several anatomical and radiological lines that have been visualized to facilitate understanding of its surgical anatomy. In this study we aimed to review the state-of-the art craniometric CVJ lines and approaches. Methods: In December 2016 a PubMed search was performed, including the search terms ‘CVJ surgical approach/line’, ‘cervical approach’, ‘craniometric measurement’, ‘CVJ anatomy’ and ‘ventral/dorsal/far-l…

Mini-drones swarms and their potential in conflict situations

2021

Drones are currently used for a wide range of operations, such as border surveillance, general surveillance, reconnaissance, transport, aerial photography, traffic control, earth observation, communications, broadcasting, and armed attacks. This paper examines the swarming and associated abilities to overwhelm a combatant as well as bring extra functionality by means of extra sensors spread throughout the swarm. The strategy of stealth is becoming increasingly less effective. Combatants can not only sense them, but can also successfully destroy them (although this cannot be said for nano-drones). For mini-drones, objectives can be enhanced by the strategy of overwhelming. peerReviewed

Tumor fibroso localizado de la pleura: hallazgos radiológicos

2007

Localized fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare tumors that represent less than 5% of the pleural tumors, although they have also been described in extrathoracic locations such as the abdomen, head and neck or central nervous system. A total of 80% begin in the visceral pleura and are not related with environmental risk factors. They generally occur in patients over 50 with a mild predominance in the woman. Up to 50% of the patients are asymptomatic, so that it appears as an incidental finding on the chest X-ray. These are slow growing tumors. They are seen on the X-ray as well-defined rounded lesions dependent on the pleura and 50% are pediculated. It is important to know its radiological …

Endoscopy at Bedside in Isolated Patients with Severe COVID-19: Our Approach during the Pandemic

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the management of emergency medicine and those complications that needed interventional procedures, such as endoscopy or other radiological procedures. At the beginning of the outbreak, there were no exploitable recommendations regarding the proper policy to apply for limiting the virus spread during endoscopy. Between the first and the second wave, the approach regarding interventional procedures changed, due to higher awareness and newly defined protocols, even if different among the health centers. Patients with severe COVID-19 may develop major gastrointestinal complications or require nutritional support, so interventional procedures are required at bedsid…

Validation procedures in radiological diagnostic models. Neural network and logistic regression

1999

The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of two predictive radiological models, logistic regression (LR) and neural network (NN), with five different resampling methods. One hundred and sixty-seven patients with proven calvarial lesions as the only known disease were enrolled. Clinical and CT data were used for LR and NN models. Both models were developed with cross validation, leave-one-out and three different bootstrap algorithms. The final results of each model were compared with error rate and the area under receiver operating characteristic curves (Az). The neural network obtained statistically higher Az than LR with cross validation. The remaining resampling validatio…

A graph colouring model for assigning a heterogeneous workforce to a given schedule

1996

Abstract We analyze a heterogeneous workforce assignment problem in which the minimum number of workers required to carry out a machine load plan is calculated. The problem is formulated as a restricted vertex colouring problem and a branch and bound algorithm is presented. The special characteristics of the graph to be coloured allow an efficient implementation of the branch and bound. Computational results show that the algorithm can solve problems of 50 activities, 5, 10 and 15 machines and between 2 to 15 different types of workers in just a few seconds.
