Clavicle aseptic nonunion: is there a place for cortical allogenic strut graft?
2017
Abstract We investigated functional and radiological outcome in 57 cases of midshaft clavicle nonunion treated with open reduction and internal fixation with plate and screws over a 13 year-period. Intercalary bone graft was used in 42 patients; opposite autologous strut graft was used in 31 cases to provide mechanical support to the host bone. Patients were analysed using chart and radiological review and assessed with DASH questionnaire obtained at the latest follow-up. 37 patients were male while 20 were females, with a mean age of 35 years (63–17). All cases were of nonunion, 35 atrophic and 22 hypertrophic. The dominant side was injured in 32 cases and the non dominant in 25 cases. Pri…
Results of closed subtalar dislocations.
2015
Background The subtalar dislocation (SD) of the foot is an uncommon injury characterized by a simultaneous dislocation of talocalcaneal and talonavicular joints without involvement of the tibiotalar and calcaneocuboid joints. Purposes The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcome in a consecutive series of close SD. Methods We retrospectively evaluated a case series of patients who presented a close SD. Thirteen patients were selected for this study. There were 9 patients with a medial SD, 3 patients with a lateral dislocation and 1 patient with a posterior subtalar dislocation. Results The most frequent symptoms observed in our study included transient mil…
Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation after surgical correction of prominent ears: Case report and review of the literature
2019
International audience; Corrective surgery of prominent ears may be justified for social or aesthetic reasons during childhood or adulthood. Post-operative complications occur in approximately 0 to 8.4% of cases. This case describes a rare atlanto-axoid rotatory subluxation after bilateral surgical correction of prominent ears under general anesthesia. Orthopedic treatment was done after two months of medical roaming outside of our center. The one-year post-operative clinic consultation and radiological exam were normal. Only the psychological impact of the episode remained. Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation is a rare complication but should be considered after post-operative tor…
Radiation risks knowledge in resident and fellow in paediatrics: a questionnaire survey
2015
Background: Analyse through a multi-choice anonymous questionnaire the knowledge's level in paediatric residents and fellows in two different main Italian hospital, looking mainly to the information to patients and relatives related to risks of ionizing radiation used in common radiological investigations in children. Methods: 65 multi choice questionnaires were distributed to paediatric residents and fellows of two different hospitals, an University Hospital (A.O.U.P. "P. Giaccone"- University of Palermo) and a national reference centre for paediatrics (Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù - Rome). The questionnaire included twelve multiple-choice questions with the aim of analyzing the knowle…
Patient goals after incontinence procedures: does the single-incision sling satisfy them?
2012
Abstract Objective This study was undertaken to describe short-term postoperative achievement of subjective preoperative goals for single-incision MiniArc slings, in comparison with tension-free vaginal tape (TVT). Method Patients submitted to mid-urethral sling (TVT and MiniArc) procedures for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in two centers were included in this prospective study. Before surgery, the patients completed a preoperative open-ended questionnaire, in which they described their personal outcomes goals for SUI surgery and the degree of severity of their symptoms. At the first postoperative check, they were asked to assess the degree to which their goals had been met and the degr…
Offerings for the gate: a ritual deposit at the West Gate of la Bastida de les Alcusses (Moixent, Valencia)
2015
Carp’s-tongue swords - morphological, metallurgical and cultural aspects
2010
This contribution discusses the results from a study of the spatial distribution of different morphological sub-groups of carp’s-tongue swords at a European scale, relating morphological types to the metallurgial make-up of the respective pieces. From this study some surprising conclusions concerning the chronological as well as the spatial dimension of the evolution of carp’s-tongue swords emerge. We also look at the degree of variability in the deposition of these artefacts and in the composition of the assemblages in question, with considerable repercussions for our understanding of the depositional contexts of metal objects in the Atlantic Bronze Age world in general.
Transmission patterns in the production of Bronze Age solid- hilted swords
2023
Bronze Age swords with a bronze hilt were a highly specialised production. Casting hilts and blades and fixing them to each other require lots of precision and very specific skills. We hardly know anything about the production organisation as moulds are extremely rare, preventing us from locating workshops. However, studying swords themselves using X-ray imaging techniques allows us to reconstruct a part of the chaîne opératoire and gain insight into some aspects of the production processes. We identify three periods in the production of solid-hilted swords at the European scale:1. Experimental phase (1800-1450 BC): small-scaled productions by multiple workshops experimenting various ways o…
L’épée, arme et symbole. Le point de vue technique sur les fonctions des épées à poignée métallique de l’âge du Bronze
2018
The sword, which was invented during Bronze Age, is certainly the ultimate weapon, associated to war and warriors, designed to fight during combats. However, because of its technical complexity, its ostentatious aspect, especially when it is equipped with a bronze hilt, or its strong individualization for example through ornaments, swords can also be considered as symbols. This symbol can be connected to an individual, a social position, a community or to another concept we cannot precisely understand. Of course, material and immaterial aspects do not always exclude each other, and a single object can be used for both. However, a first inspection of these weapons shows that some of them cou…
