Temporal evolution of heavy rainfall in the southern West Africa coastline belt.

2018

The Southern Coastalbelt of West Africa (SCWA) is exposed to recurrent flooding. The two objectives of the study are to show thespecificity of SCWA to heavy rainfall occurrence and to determine the trends of the latter. Daily rainfall data of41 stations in the southern parts of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin for the period 1951–2015 and ClimateHazards Group InfraRed Precipitation data were used. The approach is based on the determination (for eachstation and grid point) of the 95th centile (P95) of precipitations greater than or equal to 1 mm. Results indicatethat rainfall is heavier on the coastal belt than inland (average P95 is 65,4 and 45,5 m/day for coastal and inlandstations res…

In vivo and in vitro sensitivity of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm to SL-401, an interleukin-3 receptor targeted biologic agent.

2015

International audience; Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm is an aggressive malignancy derived from plasmacytoid dendritic cells. There is currently no accepted standard of care for treating this neoplasm, and therapeutic strategies have never been prospectively evaluated. Since blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm cells express high levels of interleukin-3 receptor α chain (IL3-Rα or CD123), antitumor effects of the interleukin-3 receptor-targeted drug SL-401 against blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The cytotoxicity of SL-401 was assessed in patient-derived blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm cell lines (CAL-1 and …

Biodechlord : à la recherche de traces de dégradation microbienne du chlordécone dans les sols contaminés des Antilles

2014

Session 5 - Milieux impactés / Impacted mediaSession 5 - Milieux impactés / Impacted media; Objectives: Chlordecone was intensively used in the French West Indies (FWI) to control the banana weewil. Recent surveys showed that arable soils cropped with banana, representing up to 20,000 ha, are contaminated this insecticide with concentrations ranging between 0.2 and 37.4 mg kg−1. Chlordecone was classified as a persistent organic pollutant in May 2009. It is not only contaminating soil resources but also water resources where it is often detected. This insecticide is bioaccumulated in different plant and animals thereby contaminating the food chain causing an important human health. This con…

Stilbenes and resveratrol metabolites improve mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation defects in human fibroblasts

2014

International audience; Background: Inborn enzyme defects of mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation (FAO) form a large group of genetic disorders associated to variable clinical presentations ranging from life-threatening pediatric manifestations up to milder late onset phenotypes, including myopathy. Very few candidate drugs have been identified in this group of disorders. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenol with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, recently shown to have beneficial metabolic properties in mice models. Our study explores its possible effects on FAO and mitochondrial energy metabolism in human cells, which are still very little documented. Methods: Using cells …

Anza palaeoichnological site, Late Cretaceous, Morocco. Part III: Comparison between traditional and photogrammetric records

2020

11 pages; International audience; The present study evaluates a methodological workflow that could identify dinosaur tracks and trackways more comprehensively at outcrop scale. The approach described here is based both on 3D modelling by photogrammetry at different resolutions, and on suitably processed digital elevation models (DEMs). The ichnosite of Anza, Morocco, was chosen to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed pipeline, because 323 dinosaur and pterosaur tracks discovered there have already been published. One subsector containing 89 tracks, identified in the two companion works that followed a traditional approach, was selected and divided into four subzones. By combining diff…

Communiquer sur le goût, du discours à la méthode

2013

Based on the original scientific field of taste communication, the article exposes the setting up of a methodology specific to the communication sciences. Explicating the specificity of the taste and using multidisciplinary tools, we build a communication methodology specific to the communication of sensory attribute.

'There's a [Space] For Us': Place and Space in Screen Versions of Romeo and Juliet in the Spanish 1960s: West Side Story (R. Wise and J. Robbins, 196…

2020

International audience; This article examines the critical reception of the film adaptation of West Side Story (Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, 1961) in Spanish culture and cinematography. It looks into two other screen versions of Romeo and Juliet: Los Tarantos (Francesc Rovira-Beleta, 1963) and No somos ni Romeo ni Julieta (Alfonso Paso, 1969). West Side Story remains in the Spanish cultural memory as a filmic event associated with the arrival of foreign influence amidst national-catholic dictatorship. I will use the variables “place” and “space,” which distinguish, on one hand, proper orders established by authority and, on the other hand, areas transformable by interactions and changes,…

A genre and a limit: Across the Rio Grande border: A study of Tommy Lee Jones' 2005 film "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada"

2010

Attempting to answer the deceptively simple question of how far Tommy Lee Jones' 2005 film "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" can be described as a western will give an opportunity to explore some features of the genre, especially the geography of the Western, as well as study a few stories set in typical landscapes, focussing on the border between the United States and Mexico. That major locus in northern as well as mid-American imagination and culture is also the setting of a number of westerns and especially of John Ford's Rio Grande (1950), the source of our title as well as a fascinating inter-text to Tommy Lee Jones' work. A post mortem western, The Three Burials of Melquiades …
