Genetic basis of STEM occupational choice and regional economic performance : a UK biobank genome-wide association study
2023
Abstract Background Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals are regarded as the highly skilled labor force that fosters economic productivity, enterprise innovation, and international competitiveness of a country. This study aims to understand the genetic predisposition to STEM occupations and investigate its associations with regional economic performance. We conducted a genome-wide association study on the occupational choice of STEM jobs based on a sample of 178,976 participants from the UK Biobank database. Results We identified two genetic loci significantly associated with participants’ STEM job choices: rs10048736 on chromosome 2 and rs12903858 on chrom…
A two-stage genome-wide association study of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
2009
The cause of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is largely unknown, but genetic factors are thought to play a significant role in determining susceptibility to motor neuron degeneration. To identify genetic variants altering risk of ALS, we undertook a two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS): we followed our initial GWAS of 545 066 SNPs in 553 individuals with ALS and 2338 controls by testing the 7600 most associated SNPs from the first stage in three independent cohorts consisting of 2160 cases and 3008 controls. None of the SNPs selected for replication exceeded the Bonferroni threshold for significance. The two most significantly associated SNPs, rs2708909 and rs2708851 …
Sztuka gier wideo. Wybrane aspekty badań nad estetycznością i artyzmem gier komputerowych
2015
Autor podejmuje problematykę różnorodności stanowisk krytycznych w badaniach nad estetycznością i artyzmem gier wideo (stanowiska te są częścią pluralistycznego dyskursu nad sztuką gier komputerowych). W artykule zestawione zostają sądy i teorie reprezentujące różne sposoby traktowania kategorii estetyczności i artyzmu gier wideo, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem argumentów negujących i aprobujących istnienie sztuki gier komputerowych. Obok zarysu genezy artystycznych gier wideo podejmowana jest refleksja nad teorią badań sztuki gier komputerowych w odniesieniu do teorii sztuki Ryszarda W. Kluszczyńskiego oraz Josepha Margolisa.
Type 1 Diabetes and Autoimmune Thyroid Disease—The Genetic Link
2021
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) are the most frequent chronic autoimmune diseases worldwide. Several autoimmune endocrine and non-endocrine disorders tend to occur together. T1D and AITD often cluster in individuals and families, seen in the formation of autoimmune polyendocrinopathy (AP). The close relationship between these two diseases is largely explained by sharing a common genetic background. The HLA antigens DQ2 (DQA1*0501-DQB1*0201) and DQ8 (DQA1*0301-DQB1*0302), tightly linked with DR3 and DR4, are the major common genetic predisposition. Moreover, functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (or rare variants) of various genes, such as the cytotoxic T-lym…
Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness in Heterogeneous Systems
2020
This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the 15th EAI International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness in Heterogeneous Networks, QShine 2019, held in Shenzhen, China, in November 2019. The 16 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 55 submissions. The papers are organized thematically in tracks, starting with mobile systems, cloud resource management and scheduling, machine learning, telecommunication systems, and network management.

On the origin and diversification of Podolian cattle breeds: testing scenarios of European colonization using genome-wide SNP data
2021
AbstractBackgroundDuring the Neolithic expansion, cattle accompanied humans and spread from their domestication centres to colonize the ancient world. In addition, European cattle occasionally intermingled with both indicine cattle and local aurochs resulting in an exclusive pattern of genetic diversity. Among the most ancient European cattle are breeds that belong to the so-called Podolian trunk, the history of which is still not well established. Here, we used genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data on 806 individuals belonging to 36 breeds to reconstruct the origin and diversification of Podolian cattle and to provide a reliable scenario of the European colonization, throug…
Big Data Metadata Management in Smart Grids
2014
Smart home, smart grids, smart museum, smart cities, etc. are making the vision for living in smart environments come true. These smart environments are built based upon the Internet of Things paradigm where many devices and applications are involved. In these environments, data are collected from various sources in diverse formats. The data are then processed by different intelligent systems with the purpose of providing efficient system planning, power delivery, and customer operations. Even though there are known technologies for most of these smart environments, putting them together to make intelligent and context-aware systems is not an easy task. The reason is that there are semantic…
Taking Online Search Queries as an Indicator of the Public Agenda
2016
Recently, several studies suggested that the amount of online search queries can be used as an indicator of the public agenda. Based on former research by the authors, this article discusses the role of public uncertainty as another factor influencing search queries. Therefore, the influence of media coverage on Wikipedia searches concerning two issues is compared: one issue with uncertainty (the Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli [EHEC] epidemic), and one without uncertainty (unemployment). Analyses show much stronger correlations in the case of EHEC, which suggests that online search behavior may especially be used as an indicator of the public agenda in case public uncertainty exists.
