Third-harmonic generation in optical microfibers: From silica experiments to highly nonlinear glass prospects

International audience; Using optical microfibers, phase matching between different propagation modes allows for third-harmonic generation (THG). After detailing the relevant phase matching conditions and overlap integrals, we provide a comparison between THG effective efficiencies in silica and tellurite glasses. We also explain the relatively easy, wideband, conversion that we observe experimentally in silica glass microfibers, from 155 mu m to the green, by the geometry of the tapering region.

Integrated multimedia publishing: combining TV and newspaper content on personal channels

Abstract Fast networks enable the delivery of TV and newspaper content over an Internet connection. This enables new types of integrated publications that include features from both media. The IMU system, described in this paper, automatically integrates newspaper and TV content into a continuously updated World Wide Web-multimedia publication. An active proxy server pursues the integration and delivers the publication through an ATM fibre link to fast networks, such as the bi-directional cable TV network and the ADSL telephone network, providing near-TV quality. Progressive Web Apps for the Unified Development of Mobile Applications

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) allow for web applications to be developed in an offline-first approach. While Web apps traditionally did not properly function without an Internet connection, PWAs enable them to be downloaded, installed and used offline on various systems, including mobile devices and personal computers. We present an introduction to the state-of-art in research and practice. Based on this, we discuss various underlying concepts and technologies. Then, we scrutinize and compare PWAs against cross-platform app development approaches on both technical and overarching aspects. A list of suggestions for future research is also presented. The number of mobile subscribers in the world is soon reaching the three billion mark. According to the newest estimates, majority of the subscribers are already in the developing countries, whereas the number of subscribers in the industrialized countries is about to stagnate around one billion. Because especially in the developing countries the only access to Internet are mobile devices, developing high quality services based on them grows in importance. Ontologies are an important ingredient towards more complicated mobile services. In this paper we refine the taxonomy for mobile ontologies and discuss their creation, business models, maintenance and intellectual property rights (IPR).

Abstract Cluster studies identified a subgroup of patients with psychosis whose premorbid adjustment deteriorates before the onset, which may reflect variation in genetic influence. Small angle X-ray scattering from amorphous polymers arising from heterogeneities

The small angle X-ray scattering of glassy polymers (PET, PC, PVC, PMMA) and of polymer melts (PE) was studied. The dependence of the intensity scattered at small angles on the sample treatment suggests that neither the inherent structure of the pure polymer phase nor microholes are the origin of the scattering. In agreement with all experimental facts the scattering can be attributed to foreign particles such as for instance stabilizers in the polymer matrix. The consequence of this result is discussed with respect to the nodular structure of the amorphous phase and with respect to structural models of the amorphous phase. Fully Vacuum-Processed Wide Band Gap Mixed-Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Methylammonium lead mixed-halide perovskites MAPb(BrxI1–x)3 are promising materials for the preparation of tandem devices. When exposed to light, MAPb(BrxI1–x)3 segregates in iodide- and bromide-rich phases, limiting the achievable photovoltage and hence the attainable device efficiency. To date only solution-processed mixed-halide perovskites have been demonstrated. We present fully vacuum-deposited mixed-halide perovskite thin films with band gap of 1.72 and 1.87 eV, prepared by controlling the deposition rates of the different halide precursors. Polygenic association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder liability and cognitive impairments.

AbstractBackgroundA recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 12 independent loci significantly associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Polygenic risk scores (PRS), derived from the GWAS, can be used to assess genetic overlap between ADHD and other traits.
