Study and Modelling of the Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) Process Employed in the Production of Oxygen

An isothermal and non-equilibrium mathematical model was provided for the multi-component adsorption process. In addition, the software was developed for the VSA-based production of oxygen with the use of a CaX zeolite molecular sieve. The mathematical model and computer software were verified on the basis of experimental data. The study employed a test stand comprising two adsorption columns. The adsorption pressure P A = 150 and 135 kPa and desorption pressure P D = 20 kPa were adopted in the experiments. The tests produced oxygen with the purity of 90–94% O 2 (vol), at an efficiency of 55–73% and productivity of 570–850 kg O 2 per ton per day. The calculation results showed good consiste…

Should Vanishing Twin Pregnancies Be Systematically Excluded From Cell-Free Fetal DNA Testing?

Objective To demonstrate the feasibility of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing in vanishing twin (VT) pregnancies in routine clinical practice. Methods Our study included 24 874 singleton and 206 VT consecutive pregnancies. Cell-free DNA was analyzed by massively parallel sequencing. Both aneuploidy analysis (chromosomes 13,18, 21, X, and Y) and fetal fraction estimation were performed according to an Illumina algorithm. Contaminant DNA contribution from the demised co-twin was studied in detail. Different types of intestinal atresia in identical twins

The authors present a previously unreported association of different types of intestinal atresia in identical low-birth-weight twins. Both babies were affected by duodenal atresia, associated in the first case with a complete mucosal duodenal membrane and in the second one with an "apple-peel" jejunal atresia. These occurrences may suggest that they were either the consequence of linkage of 2 genes or a pleiotropic expression of a single gene responsible for such rare conditions.

Coffee and Smoking as Risk Factors of Twin Pregnancies: The Danish National Birth Cohort

AbstractTwinning rates have changed substantially over time for reasons that are only partly known. In this study we studied smoking, coffee and alcohol intake, and their possible interaction with obesity as potential determinants of twinning rates using data from the Danish National Birth Cohort between 1996 and 2002. We identified 82,985 pregnancies: 81,954 singleton and 1031 twins. For the twins we had data to classify 121 as monozygotic, 189 dizygotic (same sex), 313 dizygotic (opposite sex) but, 408 were of the same sex but with unknown zygosity. We studied whether persistent physical activity compared with inactivity has a global effect on serum metabolome toward reduced cardiometabolic disease risk. SUMMARYAnkylosing spondylitis (AS) is a complex genetic disease in which both MHC and non-MHC genes determine disease susceptibility.
